I rang and asked about his take on 'lined' and he couldn't give a definitive reply. He said when songwriting, the meaning of the lyrics don't matter that much, which seemed a bit odd since he had himself just altered a few words from the original Khe Sanh.

However, I have been thinking along the lines of the female representing a stereotype for someone straitjacketed by the politically correct customs existing at that time. So the vet couldn't kiss his female friend because she had become negatively influenced by a prevalent custom not to kiss in public and so refused to let him kiss her.

No I dont think its anything that direct, I think it's some piece of vet slang relating to the next verses. Could be a drug reference,, or it could relate to the "closed in fast suburban chains". Guy has had his mind both opened and damaged by what he saw, home is just too pedestrian.

If you are old enough to remember (or see in old movies) - the sound of dozens of typwriters and telex machines clattering away would sound like machine guns to a Vet with PTSD. The gunships were Huey helicopters mounted with 0.30 calibre machine guns.
