@leemassey1 Actually the entire video is only 1:36, and within 30 seconds he had two half blocks that I'd be able to use on my retaining wall. Very nicely done, and informative.
@leemassey1 He starts to score the block at :04 and at :31 the block is in two halves. So yes, within 30 seconds he has cut the block into two half blocks. I used his info while building a retaining wall in the backyard over the weekend. I used roughly 100 blocks and needed to split about 6 of them into various sizes and shapes. Worked like a charm. Sure, maybe you can do it faster but c'mon..."5 minutes later"?
Yes you can use this method for clay pavers, however with clay pavers you might want to cut them on top of a small pile of sand to help prevent the paver from cracking in the wrong place. Remember go lightly to start with until you have the paver scored all way round (hopefully creating a hair line crack in the paver where you want it to break) then be more forceful i.e. give it a good slap!
Hey Mate, just wondering if you can use this method for clay pavers? I know that they are much harder than concrete ones, can i just chilsel it?!!?!?!?
@hickeymaster -- thanks mucho from a complete layman. Had to shorten a pretty stout concrete pier block as part of a backyard project and was able to score and chisel off the bottom pretty handily after picking up a mason's chisel. Thanks!
I have a very small job where I may need to cut 4-5 blocks in half
I think it's amazing how people lack common sense. I'm sure this isn't intended for someone building a freaking house - there are other tools for that. Obviously you wouldn't do this for 35 years!
People, think before you post. It's scary how ignorance abounds.
Thanks again for the quick tutorial - now I'm not afraid of cutting a few blocks on my own ;o)
@Zunzhine7 Actually Carla this is exactly how a qualified bricklayer cuts a half block for any size job, in Ireland anyhow. It takes four years to become a qualified craftsperson and basically you learn how to do everything using just the tools in your bag and your own skills. Best of luck with your small job and thanks for the comment :-)
I will be building my little wall this weekend ;o)
I guess I got a little defensive (not my place ;o) when reading comments about "get a saw, blah blah blah"
Physical labor is very hard work regardless of whether you use a huge machine to speed up the process or the tools in your bag. I actually wish more people knew how to get by with the tools in their bag - it's sad how many are dead in the water with basic tools. I commend your hard work and I'll let you know how I do ;oP
Hi, Jo3yB7, this cut is for finished block work which requires all of the joints between the blocks to be exactly 10mm and therefore accuracy is important to allow for the joint to be finished decoratively by either key jointing or V jointing it. Time is money and you want the job done correctly first time! If it was rough block work I would just lash the block out of it with the lump hammer, although this can ware away the edges of your lump hammer after a while.
How long do you take man!!. just put the block down lying flat on top of your other block,s but where your going to cut put that to the edge of the stack below and give it 4 or 5 good wacks along the measurement and you have a perfect half this takes to long to do especially on a buliding site where this needs to be down quickly to save time...

Cool.
You just saved me the cost of renting a saw. I may not get it as straight as you can, but I'll try on my little project.
If I mess up, blocks are cheap and I can use the practice.

Very skillful, but do that a few times a day for 35 years and your joints are going to suffer.

It's cheaper to use my own tools and skills as a craftsman, but a saw would do a good job too if you don't have the skills.
Thanks for your comment
