After starting the mini, turn the engine off, keep your foot on the clutch, remove the key and press the starter button again. It'll start without the key.
Designed so that you can leave the car on to warm up, but still have the key with you to lock it :)
There's an optional "keyless start" system where as long as you have the key fob with you, all you have to do is touch a small button on the outside door handle to unlock the car. Then you just push the start button once inside. One of our cars has it, but our Mini Cooper S does not. I don't care for it in our Acura. Accidently ran the battery down because the car was not actualy "off". It has a start dial, not a button like the Mini. You can easily not turn it all the way off.

Acura if the battery is down cuz u forgot the lights inside! cuz when u turn off the engine and u leave the lights on the car start beeping!
