I think if money is no object, your better off with 4x 5870s instead of 2x 5970s. Because it's better to have 4 gpus with 4 individual pci-e slots, than 4 gpus bottlenecked to 2 pci-e slots. (more bandwidth for each gpu)

@Kommandant986 The Sapphire 5970 4GB Toxic actually has higher gpu clocks than the Asus Ares (Sapphire - 900mhz VS Asus - 850mhz) and is also cheaper so I don't think your statement is well founded

@SapphireUKPR Yes, you are correct about the clock speed. But a 5970 is a hybrid between a 5850 and a 5870 x2. The Asus Ares is a full on 5870 x2. But both are good cards, and yours is cheaper per FPS.

Even the original standard 5970 was designed as a full 5870 x2 with the core voltages and clocks being reduced to keep to the specification of the PCIE socket and the cooler. There are official tools for the original card to bring it up to full 5870 x2 voltages and speeds at the click of a button. Our 5970 4Gb Toxic is a full 5870 x2 with additional factory overclocking and tweaking.

If this was true a 5970 would be identical to a 5870 in crossfire in benchmarks which is not the case. 5870's in crossfire preform better. People believe that a 5970 is two 5870 put together, which seems logical, but is not the case. It uses two gpus more like a 5850. If you use logic and think about it, this seems obvious considering price and performance you see from these cards.

@Jak3Mac The 5970 uses two 5870 GPU's that are downclocked. That is why two 5870's in crossfire will outperform a standard 5970. If you use the unlocking tool which are available for all 5970's then you get the full speed of the two 5870 GPU's on the 5970 and then it will perform at its full speed.

@cheeches Let me explain the difference between the 5870 and 5970. All 5970s including the standard cards use 2x full 5870 GPU's but they have been downclocked and undervolted to keep within the limits of the PCI-E specification. If you want to, you can download the free unlocking program that is available for all 5970's from each manufacturer which will in one click up the core speeds and the voltages to full 5870 speeds. If by this you mean that the Ares is "unlocked", then our toxic is too.
