I tried calling the 800 number and its "The National Telemarketing Company". It would be funny if it was still Phillips desperately trying to sell CD-I's lol.
Abridged version of infomercial: "Hey Phil, we do educational games" "Hey Phil, we do movies" "Hey Phil, we do books" "Hey Phil, we do games" "Hey Phil, we do educational games" "Hey Phil, we do movies" "Hey Phil, we do books" "Hey Phil, we do games" "Hey Phil, we do educational games" "Hey Phil, we do movies" "Hey Phil, we do books" "Hey Phil, we do games" "Hey Phil, we do educational games" "Hey Phil, we do movies" "Hey Phil, we do books" "Hey Phil, we do games" ...
@cuttock hey I used to love playing FMV games had a bunch for my sega cd and the 32 X .. Tom cat alley u kidding shit was da bomb .. made u feel like u were a part of the movie and stuff ..I wish u could get some of those classics for nintendo wii.. so far the only ones I've found ..were Mad Mcree and dragon's lair ..oh well fuck it .LOL can't wait for Oblivion 5 to come out and Uncharted 3 .. YEAAA :)
@cuttock Yes and no. FMV games were very big at that time, there were no DVDs yet and CD-I movie quality was actually a bit better than regular VHS video ones. The problem was cost: the titles available were all too expensive for what you'd get out of them. Kodak CDs cost $25 to make besides regular developing costs and the quality was pretty low (640x480 resolution), for example. But most interactive titles were pretty lame - there were too few titles that made use of the machine.
When I was a kid I thought Phil was a douchebag, but now I feel genuinely sorry for him. His neighbors probably all laughed at him when he brought the godforsaken thing to his house. Poor guy. Hopefully it was an educational experience.
no wonder this flopped.. there is no main target consumer. they kept it broad and mention educational so that kids or immature dads to ask wives to get it. just fucking say it! "CDi, an over priced gaming machine."
@ocarinasandpoetry Yep. For it's time, the CD-i was actually a pretty neat system, technically. The problem is that A.) most of the games weren't that good, and the ones that weren't were cheaper on PC, and B.) It's movies were on VCD, which were kind of crappy (70 minutes of video even *lower* res then VHS), and hard to find, at least in the U.S./Europe.
If they'd waited a few years for DVD to come out, I think it might have done a bit better...
You forgot the best part of CDi movies: in order to play, you needed to buy a $200 MPEG attachment. The basic CDi (running at between $1000 and $500 for most of its lifespan) didn't do much. Want to play games? Go buy a $50 controller to replace the worst controller ever packaged with a console. At least it played CDs, but so did a $25 walkman.
they are a big company so they have the money to make a good system, if they just took all the retarded things out and just made a video game console they would have kicked ass
imagine if the retards that made the 3DO had had a $299 selling prices instead of 700 bucks
@sygo7g It's all good though. If it weren't for the SNES CD-ROM prototype then Sony may have never gotten into the video gaming industry. I was a big fan of the PSX, The PS2, and now I love the PS3. So I'm glad things worked out that way. Things would have been very different today. We might all be playing the Nintendo WiiStation 3. :P
@sygo7g Exactly! You really had to live in the time to fully grasp the experience and appreciate this for what it was. Many people don't realize the CD-i format was developed back in '87.
When I bought the CD-i I bought it for the Photo-CD (which was awesome!), VCD movies (again, very impressive to watch full screen "better than VHS" quality movies on a CD), Future add-on for the SNES (ok, they failed on this, but blame Nintendo!), Encyclopedia on a CD, not to mention a kick ass audio player!
well i got a 3DO with goldstar on ebay with gex its actually a good game its side scroller reminds me of crash bandicoot
and the console its self works very well but wut disturbs me is it only has 1 controller slot so u have to put the 2nd controller slot has to go on the 1st player controller but its a very well made console
Maybe, but a couple of detractors to VCD were video quality that was roughly the same as VHS and a maximum time of about 70 minutes for one disc. For the price and limitations, LaserDisc would have been a better deal up until DVD.
PlayStation consoles, with exception of the white Asian version, can't play Video CDs without an external VCD adapter.
I do have a VCD adapter for my PlayStation, but it's not used because my DVD player does a better job playing what little VCDs I have.
@fullflavormenthol Also, the CD-i was never intended to be a hardcore games console, as a result they simple hadn't build up a network of game developers. When Philips realized it made a mistake by not focusing on the game console market, it was already to late. Mind you, this is a 16-bit , fourth generation machine. The PSX is a 32-bit, fifth generation console. The CD-i was released in 1991, the SNES hadn't even hit the market in Europe yet. Graphically it was superior to any 16-bit machine.
@DrNo0Entertainment1 That's sarcasm right??? These were pre-DVD video CDs. DVD holds 4.7 GB these held about 700MB. This was released about 6 years before the DVD player came out in the US, and basically the only competition to Laserdisc until DVD showed up. This was for people who wanted something better than VHS, but didn't want a $1000 LD player
@girochin007 The Laser-Disc(LD) technology was also invented by Philips in the late 70's. To be fair, on launch, the CD-i was in the same price range(about $1000), but the CD-i could do things(interactive applications, play games) a Laser-Disc player couldn't do.
@DrNo0Entertainment1 Guess what? CD, DVD and Blue-ray are all technologies owned by Philips. Coincidence? Philips receives royalties over every single CD, DVD and Blue-ray sold.
This machine was ahead of its time in many ways (watch movies, online gaming, a remote controller with thumbstick). Nintendo and Playstation borrowed a lot from the CD-i. It was poor marketing and a lack of good game developers that sealed its faith, not so much the capabilities of the machine itself.
@indivum Unfortunately for me the CD-i turned me off from CD-based consoles for a while. When the Playstation was announced I thought "oh not another TV company trying video games". I missed out on lots of PS1 and some PS2 gaming.
@exposed97 The DVD format is owned by Philips as well. In fact Philips recieves royalties over every single CD, DVD and Blueray disc sold, even blanks.
I wish I had a cyber woman like "Help" in my home. God, she is so amazingly fuckable! I wonder what's under that lab coat. Haha.. Voyeur is not for kids, Phil!
Do you know what's funny? I had "Little Monster at School" for Windows 95. The first PC title I ever had. It helped me read!
It's funny to think that the Bearstein Bears and Little Monster titles were eventually ported to the PC with the exact same technology, probably better even, and for most definitely a smaller price. xD
@Mclovin7831 and I'm sure you've used a CD-i to know this first hand right? It's not like you would just jump on the I hate CD-i bandwagon without testing it for yourself or anything.. that would be umm.. well, stupid!
Also, it was $700-$800 when it came out, not $500.
It's technology paved the wave for DVD-Video and Blu-Ray discs.
It's a shame that people are judging the CD-i without having actually played one !
3 Things to keep in mind before leaving the predictable "CD-i looks like #%^%$" reply.
1. This technology was developed in the early 80's. Many years before the Sony PlayStation. So STOP comparing it!! It's pointless.
2. It wasn't initially marketed primarily as a game machine. The "i" in CD-i is for Interactive media. It plays a ton of media. CD Audio (Red), CD Video (White), Photo-CD, CD+G, CD+bridge.
For it's time $700 was a good price for something that contained a computer AND CD-ROM. Remember this was 1990. The RCA VIS, and Commodore CDTV were also $700 retail. The TG16 CD-ROM add-on was $400. 3DO was also $700.
Sure it wasn't the most amazing game player, but for games that used FMV this was among the best.
This was 1990.. FMV games were supposed to be the future of gaming!
Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, and the ALG arcade ports were the best on here until the later DVD-Video versions.
damn philips just tried to use headphones on this and found out that my headphones were made by philips! they didn't work... everything sucks bout philips.
I can watch movies on a compact disc? What's next, a motion sensing videogame system? Oh, wait, they have that. the Wii. a good, really underrated system. not the cdi, though I have never played one
not only was the system over priced, the thing barely fucking worked even if it was brand new. the 90's were a very great decade for video games systems but this system was not one of them
it took almost 20 years for this technology to kinda take off if u think about it the xbox 360 and the playstation 3 are kind of what the cdi wanted to be back in the day.
Do you also have the CD-I infomercial that was a 3 part sitcom like infomercial? The second part was about 3 teen boys (or they were actors playing teens) who broke one of the boys' father's game console. The game machine repair man comes and hooks up the CD-I. One of the actors playing one of the teen boys is Barry Watson from 7th Heaven / Sorority Boys / Samantha Who? fame. I have it on VHS but I haven't watched in forever and would like to see the ENTIRE infomercial.
i bet that bitch! thought she was in the top best world of technology. and the guy sucks he has such crappy gay acting skills he don't look that interesting he was in for the money.
