Yes, plastic folders, flexible cutting boards, etc are also good potential template material. Just be sure to test them with the paint you are using to be sure that they are solvent-proof and won't melt from the thinner. Of course water-based paints are safe with any of those materials.
I've used a number of different materials to make stencils. Theres no way i wanna pay those big bucks for stencils when i can make ones that work just fine. In the scrapbooking section of the hobby store, there are stencil making materials, you just have to be resourceful.
