I agree with Ulrich not just as a metallica fan but his points he made were valible he does not want for their music to be free because it could start a trend of people just downloading music for free put it this way if napster became big think what that would cause in the WHOLE music industry artists would recieve no money or big income which people would result in NO MUSIC not saying that music is only done for the money but it is still a big factor whether you like it or not
I belive him. Sick of people hating on Lars cause of this Napster bullshit. He didn't do that for the money. he has all the money in the world. I think if i was an artist i would get pissed off 2! Metallica just had the balls to step up and say something!
To sum up Chuck D, rap g's cant get our pathetic raps out: about how wealth is everything, do what you got to get it, break laws, act like a scumbag and kill people; because most of the civilised world doesn't accept our mentality. So, if we pretend that we are for the people we can force our criminalistic g shit to people through napster. Now all of the untalented gbanger rap idiots can say, Geeyah I am a criminal and I got money. / IS IT BECAUSE RAP IS PATHETIC THAT THEY SUPPORT NAPSTER? YES!!
Lars said in this "if you don't respect my views I don't want you as a fan". So since when do we have to respect an artists social and philosophical values to enjoy their music, art, writing etc?
And in my opinion, it was practically inevetible...
I knew it would probably happen.
People who say Lars is a douche. Yeah, it's kinda irponic because years later, Shaun Fanning actually admitted to what he was doing was... Well, Fucking dumb.
Another case of giving the people the internet and then calling them criminals for using it. If downloading is illegal then close down all the "illegal" free sharing sites that make it possible. There are a lot of sides to this. I don't buy cds anywhere near what I used to. I research them and listen to samples. Most full albums aren't worth the price. I can remember buying $20 CDs before the internet, where you can preview songs. I wasted a lot of money on bad albums.
As for the argument, there are good points made by both, but considering how the economy is for regular working people right now, it's easy to see why this doesn't mean anything anymore. To some, it never did. Also, the last album you should've downloaded from Metallica came out in 1991.
KEEPONBRIAN you mean 1988, Justice For All, right? I admit the black album has a few good songs, but it was Metallica's first commercialized album signaling their inevitable sell out.
and lars isnt doing anything about it. because after all this shit he went through to stop people from downloading his music, I can still download every single song that metallica have ever recorded, so he fails..
Well I don't think Lars is only thinking about the money, I tink it's been pumped out a bit so he sounds like a selfish idiot. Death magnetic was release for free on the internet some days before the right release, an he said that Metallica doesn't really care about that they are just so exited to see the reaction of the album, I don't think he is only doing it for the money.
that is true, but I also believe that peer to peer file sharing, can be a great tool for up and coming artist who what to get there music out there. I quess with the good, comes the bad. but what lars and metallica need to understand is that p2p file sharing is all part of the game, its never gonna end,and there's nothing the can do to stop it. its like a famous actor getting all pissed off over the paparazzi. they can either deal with it, or stop acting. metallica needs to stop complaining.
Lars is actually dealing with it, I stopped downloading for the day napster thing came out in the news, also your first comment looked really disrepectable, and Metallica is not a new band who needs their music out there. I don't really see why you wanna download their stuff, are you so poor that you can't affort in their cd's?
your right, metallica is not a new band that needs to get their material out. but there are plenty of new artist's that do need to get there music out. and p2p is a great way to do it. so this technology does serve a good purpose. and yes i can afford to buy their cd's, but I dont use cd players, I use my ipod touch. plus there music isnt worth paying for anyway, most of it sucks balls.
If you think it sucks why the hell do you even download it? And why are you even watching tis movie? And btw you must be really stupid if you don't know that you can play your cd's on your computer and even set the cd songs on an ipod lol, you don't need a cd player.
the point Im trying to make is that lars, and metallica, or any artist for that matter cant stop people from downloading music, I download there songs just so I can prove lars wrong. I know you can transfer cd onto your compter, but I still wouldnt buy their music. some of their older stuff wasnt that bad, but its still not worth buying it when I can download it for free. I win, and lars is a piece of shit who cant do anything about the current situation with downloading music. epic FAIL!!!!
No he can't do anything about it, but people can stop downloading if they don't want to be theifs (In my opinion people who download is theifs) and I don't think I'm the only person who stopped downloading their songs after the napster episode, so he did something about it, but not much. Maybe in your eyes you win, but really not in my eyes.
well no offense, but your opinion that people downloading music are thiefs isnt going to stop people from downloading because something like eight million households in the U.S. are still sownloading music. but your right in the sense that people can stop downloading if they really want to, but thats really a personal choice based on that person's moral. even though I dont download music very often, I will still continue to do so on occasion. I still believe it can be used for good purposes.
hey lars, I think I'm gonna download some metallica songs off of limewire, oh wait, I already have, what are you gonna do about it...NOTHING!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I´m a huge fan of Lars and Metallica and I´ve been a metclub member since 1996 and still am. I also listen to and enjoy PE.
But I guess now I´m starting to see Chuck´s point a bit more. Maybe artists need to find new ways to reach their fans because record companies are mostly there for themselves.
And Metallica are not a band that you can use as the norm to set the rules by. How many Metallicas are there? 4-5..? I respect Lars always though.
1. lars clearly makes products not art (album cycle blah blah)
2. soulseek etc. no third party makes money there.
3. If the record industry made better music and didn't just pump out products to market and sell then maybe people wouldn't feel so inclined to steal it. maybe.
It obivious lars has sort advice on this subject Lars should come out and say he wants to protect the "CONTROL" of the Artists work for the major record labels so they can decide when, where and how the music is listened to and how it is distributed and also to protect the profits of the major record labels
Metallica are sticking it to the man. they spoke up when noone else would, there fighting the majority, you cant get anymore ballsy than that. Btw rap is fucking shit!
metallica are the man now, all they care about is money and corperate sponsers. SO MUCH FOR THE FANS. AND ANYWAY. IF YOU LOVE A BAND THAT MUCH AND BORROW SOME OF THERE SONGS. YOUR PROBLEY GOING TO WANT TO BY MEMORABLIA ANYWAY
what if... your a musician... such as myself, i am a guitarist... and you hear a song on the radio or something... and you really wanna learn it to play along to and stuff. Should it be so frowned upon just to download a song or two just to learn, and to admire more since you can listen to it over and over... it IS another method of marketing after all, and if i like it.. i'll probably go out and find the album that has the song on it.
is it really hard to pay ONE dollar for a song you want. Not all of the money goes to the artist, it goes to the producer, the engineer. That's the way service works. They spend a lot of time making this music, and you people take it for granted. Lars is right.
wtf's wrong with people like you, can you not dish out £8 or summit for a cd. Not only the fact that once youve bought it you've got it for life but also to show your appreciation for the artist. No danger of viruses or hackers with cd's. If a hacker gets on your pc that'll cost more than metallica's back catolouge. Lime wires just for chep scummy computer nerd who arent true fans of music. How can you call yourself a fan of a band if you dont even have one of their albums?
Have you ever thought that music is art? Art is supposed to be shared and consumed by as many people as possible, not just the people who pay for it. Also, most people who download music wouldn't have bought the music anyway. I don't want to pay 20 bucks for an album that turns out to be utter shit. Instead I'll download it, and if I like it, I'll buy an album, go to a show, and buy some merch. But if I download it and I hate it, I delete it, not buying something I wouldn't buy anyway.
cocksucking faggot, why you hating on the freedom of speech i have bitch, its my fucking opinion so dont get too emotional like a bitch on her period.
sad to see people talk shit like this but dont even have the balls to say it to people to their face.
go on, insult me faggot, you win this fucking argument. but just to make it clear, if you win an argument on the internet, its like winning the special olympics. dont hurt yourself too much with this victory dumbass!!!!
Another point is that if you allow napster and downloading for free, the slippery slope is this...eventually the artist is no longer deemed the creators of the music because once other externalities (rec. comp and "the people") get to have control, THEY decide what is what. If they don't want to give credit to the artist, then the artist isn't an artist anymore. If I create something in Chuck D.'s world, their would be no need for a song title, band name, etc. because the people control it.
yea but they could still 'prove' that they are the original artists through fame, and all covers made by some napster user would be pointless. not going against your statement here but wouldn't it be the truth?
It's so easy to see that Lars has logic on his side. It's simple, and I can't stand the fact that just because Chuck D. thinks that because you are talking about "the people" that it somehow means he's for democracy. If it wasn't for copyright ownership, he wouldn't be sitting there with Lars and Charlie. I understand if artists want to be able to give away there music, but Lars is correct...It's fucking up to the artist what happens to THEIR songs. Not the people, not the corporates.
At 17:20, Lars argues about a reversal of greed about one not paying $16 for a CD. My question is where my money is going to. I can understand it if the money is going to the band. Especially if it's an artist is struggling to make ends meet. I would hate to see my money go to some corrupt MTV major label. I have no problem someone downloading my music for free. It only becomes a problem when they bootleg it to make a profit.
well now u pro naspter people can stop bitching because metallica put thir whole new cd up for free in a streming format and anyone with 2 cents of computer know how can record thatdirectly to their pc in mp3 format so i see it as a free album
The problem is that the record company argument presupposes that the industry works the way it is, without downloading. The fact is that the vast majority of artists get screwed out of money that they should be earning BY the record companies. These souless cash whores reap tons of money, and now plead poverty- it's ridiculous. The system is already broken. Some college student downloading Metallica isn't hurting anything.
I very much see in Lars case that all he cares about is making money off the original mastered copies sent out to stores. I am a hardcore Metallica fan but i definately disagree completely with Lars and I am one of those people that believes that music should be taken as enjoying what your doing as by rocking the fucking house to Master of Puppets thats what its truly all about.
I do not think all music should be 100% free, but i also think you should be able to try something out to see if you like it without buying a whole damn album.
it not about greed at all. They produce a product that cost them money to make. Just because someone has millions doesn't mean they should give it away for free
I agree with Lars on everything he said back then. I am a Metallica fanclub member and to me he is the KING. I think time has allready proved him right. He has an IPOD now and so do I but this was never about anti new technology. About the only hip hop music I have ever really liked is Public Enemy so I think Chuck is a cool artist too. But in this issue he talked like a clueless hippie IMO. God Bless Metallica!
lmao I don't even touch Bit Torrent because when I tried otu Bit Torrent, my internet company said if I download anything with Bit Torrent again, they'll cut my internet connection. That's why I used Limewire before and after lol.
Go to news severs you can download anything for free without a chance of legal action. It's not illegal to download, just upload. Lars you suck, I stopped listening to metallica just because of you, I think a lot of other people have done the same thing.
If you don't think that suing fans doesn't show disdain for them, then what would it take. These people make far more money just from concerts alone, than anyone posting these comments . These people feel that fans wanting to listen to their music for free should be punished with fines and possibly jail. Their fans weren't even bootlegging them or anything, they made absolutely no money from it, but Lars felt it necessary to sue. Why wouldn't someone feel dejected by such treatment.
because artist offer a service... just like hairdressers. Picture how that business would go down. Besides they sued napster because of their not yet finished song I Dissapear was leaked before they finished it. Thats is why the need control. And it does not matter how much money lars and the crew have, lost money is lost money, no matter the percent of his bank account.
I'm sorry but you're not going to change my mind and it's not really my problem now is it? Lars fucked up, its not an issue of wrong or right its an issue of politics, he went from reckless hard rocker to commercialized tool. Regardless of whether its right or wrong to download music, you have to admit he screwed up his public image.
yeah i guess, but I could not care less about his image, Im in for the music. But shure, was not my intention to change your mind either. That is not possible, especially not on youtube... so truce or whatever right?:D
Lars knew ahead of time that he would be hated. However, I admire him for standing up for bands that don't have the lawyers to fight theft of creative property.
"bands that don't have the lawyers" Ok there's no point in arguing with you if you think that the bands affected by illegal downloading can't afford lawyers.
Then don't argue with me if you are so sure of these things. But I know for a fact that Metallica's principle behind fighting for artists that don't have the money win against such a powerful force like Napster was, is beneficial. Your response is so bland and weak I don't mind not arguing with you.
That nigger dont know shit. he says he cant control the tv or radio. truth is, its being controlled by the FCC. thats how they are controling it. and pretty much if they download one song and if they like it they will search that album and all the songs on that album and download every single one of them. that is illegal and i'm glad to say that i agree with Lars 100% they own their own production and the nigger doesnt he signs a contract and gets millinos wether he sells or doesnt sell.
Bottom line is. LARS is right. i support him all the way cause when i turn famous i want people to buy my CDs so i can put out more CDs and pay my bills cause i want to do what i love, Music. Plus we all got bills and shit to pay so we all need the money.
Lets see. Oh looked I liked the one song I downloaded...I'll buy te album...NO!!!
Most people download "Singles" meaning they can go around buying the entire ablum and its "deep cuts." Plus, at that point the entire catalog of songs were being downloaded. You know one or two people doing may go unnoticed. Naspter had 70 million people downloading music daily. By today, that would likely doubled.
Lars was right. He and Metallica took alot of cheap shots fot this, even to this day. Not alot of artist had the balls to stand up with Lars but now they are all agreeing with him. Lars had to be the bad guy.
No it's like somebody listened to 1 song after dowloading it and then bought the entire album cause he wanted to give this artist some money. Stealing a car from someone actually removes something from him, dowloading a song doesn't have that effect.
i believe you're stuck in the 80s lol..so here's the news for you, it's the year 2000 and 8 and this band had already outdated when this interview was done :) you can't even love em for nostalgic reasons lol.. i guess it's all about the controool
dude, do you know what you are doing in file sharing sites? your allowing hackers and thieves in your program, not just your program anyone using the server meaning your parents and others, so even if they're not using the program they're still sharing they're files kinda like second hand smoking even if they are not smoking but you are smoking you are still killing them.
Never a big fan of Metallica... was a HUGE Public Enemy fan. I respect both points of view. But I gotta side with Lars. And by the way Metallica was so huge at this point... making money on tours, merchandise and whatnot... I can say that making these allegations, these accusations.. probably hurt their bottom line. But they (Lars/Metallica) thought it was the 'right' thing. I happen to agree (I also still download, without paying)
F- metali-duh. "Control" --- this guy and his band were in the dark ages, probably didn't know how to use email. Control? That is the same fear that makes people build fences and walls and borders. That ain't free, that is prison. Lars is weak. Thank you Charlie Rose and Chuck D for asking the right questions and for Lars being the b-point.
Lars Ulrich was completely right when he stood up to Napster because it was his music that was copyrighted and essentially being stolen for free. It's alot like stealing from a store. This isn't what killed the music industry, MTV killed the music industry
I am 100% with metallica. Downloading music as deinterest music industy my over 20% in USA and 40% of germany. The music industy is actualy in danger!
I bought the computer, I pay for the ISP, I or my friends paid for the cd's or videos and if we want to file share ON OUR PROPERTY WE PAID FOR THEN ITS OUR FUCKING RIGHT!!!! THE TWISTED, GREEDY, DRUG ADDICT REPROBATES IN THE MALIGNANT, DOUCHEBAG RIAA CAN FUCK OFF!!!
There are no "illegal" sites as far as Im concerned but the advert idea is an expedient compromise. This is a property rights issue as much as a so-called copyright problem.
no he isnt. lars was standing for what he believed. and he isnt a sellout either, they took there music in the direction that wanted. just because it doesnt agree with you it doesnt make him a prick.

Instead I'll download it, and if I like it, I'll buy an album, go to a show, and buy some merch. But if I download it and I hate it, I delete it, not buying something I wouldn't buy anyway.

KainenDarkley 3 years ago
yea but they could still 'prove' that they are the original artists through fame, and all covers made by some napster user would be pointless. not going against your statement here but wouldn't it be the truth?
68chevelleSS396 3 years ago
It's so easy to see that Lars has logic on his side. It's simple, and I can't stand the fact that just because Chuck D. thinks that because you are talking about "the people" that it somehow means he's for democracy. If it wasn't for copyright ownership, he wouldn't be sitting there with Lars and Charlie. I understand if artists want to be able to give away there music, but Lars is correct...It's fucking up to the artist what happens to THEIR songs. Not the people, not the corporates.
KainenDarkley 3 years ago
Logic really isn't something only one person can use exclusively.

It only becomes a problem when they bootleg it to make a profit.

lars is so fucking dumb... "its not about the money"..... "there taking millions of dollars from us!"

I am a hardcore Metallica fan but i definately disagree completely with Lars and I am one of those people that believes that music should be taken as enjoying what your doing as by rocking the fucking house to Master of Puppets thats what its truly all about.
zuckamo 3 years ago 2
Neither of them are right to be honest.
I do not think all music should be 100% free, but i also think you should be able to try something out to see if you like it without buying a whole damn album.

I download from Limewire but only for like try outs if I love the shit I buy the Album I think that Lars is right.

it not about greed at all.

BTW Lars is from Denmark not Norway Chuck. ;)

Go to news severs you can download anything for free without a chance of legal action. It's not illegal to download, just upload. Lars you suck, I stopped listening to metallica just because of you, I think a lot of other people have done the same thing.
Stamid467 3 years ago 2
why? does the few money you actually spend on cds matter? i dont really think you were much of a fan if this stopped you from listening to Met...
Mortenoftedal 3 years ago
If you don't think that suing fans doesn't show disdain for them, then what would it take. These people make far more money just from concerts alone, than anyone posting these comments . These people feel that fans wanting to listen to their music for free should be punished with fines and possibly jail. Their fans weren't even bootlegging them or anything, they made absolutely no money from it, but Lars felt it necessary to sue. Why wouldn't someone feel dejected by such treatment.
Stamid467 3 years ago
because artist offer a service... just like hairdressers. Picture how that business would go down. Besides they sued napster because of their not yet finished song I Dissapear was leaked before they finished it. Thats is why the need control. And it does not matter how much money lars and the crew have, lost money is lost money, no matter the percent of his bank account.
Mortenoftedal 3 years ago
I'm sorry but you're not going to change my mind and it's not really my problem now is it? Lars fucked up, its not an issue of wrong or right its an issue of politics, he went from reckless hard rocker to commercialized tool. Regardless of whether its right or wrong to download music, you have to admit he screwed up his public image.
Stamid467 3 years ago
no he didnt

Lars knew ahead of time that he would be hated. However, I admire him for standing up for bands that don't have the lawyers to fight theft of creative property.
KainenDarkley 3 years ago 2
"bands that don't have the lawyers" Ok there's no point in arguing with you if you think that the bands affected by illegal downloading can't afford lawyers.
Stamid467 3 years ago
Then don't argue with me if you are so sure of these things. But I know for a fact that Metallica's principle behind fighting for artists that don't have the money win against such a powerful force like Napster was, is beneficial. Your response is so bland and weak I don't mind not arguing with you.
KainenDarkley 3 years ago
That nigger dont know shit. he says he cant control the tv or radio. truth is, its being controlled by the FCC. thats how they are controling it. and pretty much if they download one song and if they like it they will search that album and all the songs on that album and download every single one of them. that is illegal and i'm glad to say that i agree with Lars 100% they own their own production and the nigger doesnt he signs a contract and gets millinos wether he sells or doesnt sell.

Thank god I dont like metallica
jcar609 3 years ago
By today, that would likely doubled.
diehighfly05 3 years ago 2
Lars was right. He and Metallica took alot of cheap shots fot this, even to this day. Not alot of artist had the balls to stand up with Lars but now they are all agreeing with him. Lars had to be the bad guy.
phile0515 3 years ago
No it's like somebody listened to 1 song after dowloading it and then bought the entire album cause he wanted to give this artist some money. Stealing a car from someone actually removes something from him, dowloading a song doesn't have that effect.

i believe you're stuck in the 80s lol..so here's the news for you, it's the year 2000 and 8 and this band had already outdated when this interview was done :) you can't even love em for nostalgic reasons lol.. i guess it's all about the controool
AValidMember 3 years ago
i'll admit, i do sometimes download songs but i've never downloaded a whole album for free
i don't use Napster btw
with me i'll download 1 or 2 songs of an album then if i like it i'll buy the album
i'd just feel so guilty if i downloaded a whole album
another thing with downloaded songs is that if your computer screws up and then that's it; all the music files will be gone
but if you buy the actual albums you wouldn't have that problem
i agree with both of them, but more so with Lars

dude, do you know what you are doing in file sharing sites? your allowing hackers and thieves in your program, not just your program anyone using the server meaning your parents and others, so even if they're not using the program they're still sharing they're files kinda like second hand smoking even if they are not smoking but you are smoking you are still killing them.

I happen to agree (I also still download, without paying)
jaret71 3 years ago 3
Ah yes, Lars' valid, logical arguments here were clearly no match for Chuck D's flawless baseball analogies.

DavidJGallagher 4 years ago 2
Lars Ulrich was completely right when he stood up to Napster because it was his music that was copyrighted and essentially being stolen for free. It's alot like stealing from a store. This isn't what killed the music industry, MTV killed the music industry

slaakattak 4 years ago
Just out of interest, would you still use illegal sites if there were legal advert funded sites where you had to sit through a 10 - 30sec commercial?
82pendragon 4 years ago
There are no "illegal" sites as far as Im concerned but the advert idea is an expedient compromise. This is a property rights issue as much as a so-called copyright problem.
