As a sidenote, any one remember the band Rhythm Chillum? Seem to remember they featured a japanese guy with a shaved head bar a massive black ponytail on guitar. Those guys also played the Edinburgh live circuit around the same time and funked it big style too!
Finally get to see Papa's Magic Beard again after all those years! Yay! I used to go to the Transporter Room. What a crazy place that was!!! Through the spit and sawdust working man's pub downstairs at the Meadow's Bar, feeling a bit terrified of looking at some hard man wrong, then up the stairs to a hippie parallel universe where everyone's smokin fat ones, and crammed into a wee corner would be the 7 piece Papa's Magic Beard, pumpin out the wigged out psychedelic funk! Transport me back!
Cheers for this. I saw you a couple of times at Stirling Uni, I think, though I may have come through to Edinburgh for a gig instead or as well. Time passes. I came across your video looking for Funky Dalek. That was my favourite by a long way. 'I AM THE MASTER!' was a stroke of genius. Great track. Don't suppose you have a copy of it you could throw up? Lost my cassette ages ago (though more likely it was half inched).
I used to play in a band that supported you guys a few times round Edinburgh back in the day.... the Transporter Room, The Venue, that place up beside the Pear Tree etc..... Good times :o) Nice to hear this one again, it's probably my favourite of yours.
cheers aye.. those were the days!... what band were you in? are you still playing now? think the place by the pear tree was called the partridge mebbee. Papas are long gone just put the vid up for a bit of a giraffe, still tryin to play the funk tho in 'Gimpanzee'
ahh, the mighty Doctor Octopus... Z, Mikey, Joe et al, that was my favorite edinburgh band of the time...saw yoos loads, henry's (in skirts), queen margaret union etc + we did quite a few gigs together like you say.. we even gave yoos a take on at football in leith links!... were you the first guitarist (ronan, ronin or something like that?) or the second dude..(both good) the guit playrs in DR Oct were always the mysterious ones! i was the bass playr Davie in Paps btw...
I was the first one, Ronan.... Mad music from what I remember. I think I've got an old cassette (yes! cassette!!!) copy of some of it somewhere. I should dig it out for a laugh :o)
How many of them went on to East Coast Project? Dave and who else? I really liked the 1st (last?) CD East Coast Project came up wih. Blackalicious... Five Alive...
It is true though that The Flaming Os blew them off the stage at that gig in Teviot though.
i dont remember the flaming o's and I dont remember them blowing us on or off the stage!... still I asked another guy in PMB and he says they were some joke support band doing tone loc covers etc but I never watched the backup bands so who knows... I thought music was a non competeitive sport, I kind of remember the East Coast Project with Frosty, and Dave "Demus" etc??pretty good stuff One people and Freshly Squeezed come to mind but they might just of been bands around at the same time.
if you say so, like i say i dont remember a random gig at a student union all those years ago or the flaming o's.. i've played so many gigs over the years some good some bad.. put some flaming o's up on youtube might jog ma memory
