It's both in japan. In the US, Pocket monsters would have been a trademark violation against another series. Pokemon= POcKEt MONsters.

@ColbyDavid Not directly, but it would be iffy, since there was a series called Monster in my Pocket (which concerned the more traditional monsters, such as Dracula). Nintendo wanted to avoid a potential problem, a smart move by them.
