@ghsr82 Tenor banjo tuning, GDAE, gives you more than two octaves across the 4 open strings, allowing both low and high parts of a tune to be played within 7 frets. 5 String banjo only gives 1 octave across the 4 open strings, so to find the notes for the higher part of a tune you end up way up the neck. I know some people play Irish Traditional music on 5 string, but really it's better for accompanying songs. Luke Kelly, Tommy Makem, Pete Seeger - all singers and 5 string players.
I really like your style , but this is way too fast. It loses it hornpipe-bounce, and it doesn't really suit the tune. Faster doesn't necessarily mean better, although fast will make you average casual listener raise his/her eyebrows.
@Domitianvs This recording is more than two years old at this point. You should take that into account before casting aspersions. I'm a young player, and like most young players, there's a lot of room to grow. I've changed significantly in how I play, both this tune and the instrument in general, in that period of time. I only keep this up because most people seem to like it. If you don't, don't watch it.
That's very good, and it was just a helpful suggestion, not meant to be offensive, but indeed to help you grow. I'm a young musician myself, and I've learned some variations of the tune from your playing.
@Domitianvs I understand that, and I didn't mean to snap at you. I appreciate the helpful advice. I wish I'd received it back when I recorded these videos initially. Probably the most difficult thing to remember when you start acquiring any degrees of skill in Irish music is that progression doesn't have to mean "faster, faster, faster." It can mean slower and with more feeling or with new ornamentation. I'm considering revisiting this tune again some time soon.
@seamyb88 What I said had nothing to do with preference, what I said, simplified for your sake, is that it is impossible to actually dance a hornpipe to this. ITM is, after all, irish traditional music for dancing traditional irish dances to. That's all I said. Please read a comment thouroughly before dismissing it, thank you.
Great picking Buddy... as good a rendition as I've heard anywhere .... roll in into a tune called THE HARVEST HOME, they run real well together. Great Stuff., well done !

This is the same old Iida (Korean-made) 240-T I've had since I started making these videos. The open-backed banjo is a 1930s Bacon & Day Senorita.
