he is cursing himself for talking (there was a trial previously where the mission was to not talk). And then he is going to hang himself, and says that if someone out there wants him he wont hang himself. He then counts to three, twice and the rest is pretty obvious.
This is most likely as close to Mozart as you can come. That, combined with Bergmans greatness and the old Drottningholm opera with it's amazing set is pure heaven. I first watched this when I was five years old and I still get the same feeling as I did then.
This is delightful! The Papageno they chose is marvellous - many Papagenos take themselves so seriously. This Hagagard fellow is perfect for the role. He is so Mozart!
i think this is my favorite performance of this song. i really like the ending when they are removing eachother's winter clothes. there is so much HEART in this! adorable!
I actually think the Bergmans papageno is the best one ever... Most other characters I've seen better in other editions - but the Bergman Papagena stands amongst the best
A truly remarkable performance, he really put his heart into it. He shows us what happens when Opera becomes more than just the voice. When Opera develops a bonding relationship with performance and acting becomes a vital part of it, the character flourishes!
had she been born later, she would have been a much larger sex-symbol than she was (I have no Idea if she was or not). But she nails some looks that a few are know for today, and she does them better. Beautiful-determined like only Kiera Knightly can muster today among others. And with a voice like few others. She did become Royal-court singer in some manner (have no Idea how to translate her title). And she is from the town I grew up.
The voice of Both singer are above average among the other singers of this aria. In my opinion, the Swedish language is not so far from German so the feeling of the song is remain similar unlike the English version where you can feel that the feeling of the song is so distorted.
"Papagena / Papageno!" is probably one of my favorite duets. Along with the Roth/Le Roi and Terfel/Bartoli performances this has got to be one of my favorites. It's just so sweet.
1. This time (end of the XVIII century) Signore G. Balsamo advanturer alias Count Calgiostro founded the Egyptian Freemason movement.Egyptian background origins from effect of Calgiostro. Schikadenz and Mozart both were member of the freemasonary. This is a tale and a fabula against the revenge and beside the affection and the love of the human mankind.
2. Somebody Who is called Fox or Fuchs, he or she must wear fur of fox on summertime and wintertime??!!!
Somebody wrote here,it was strange Papageno without bird cloth.
Other wrote here, Papageno word meaning in old French was parrot.
I think Bergman worked well in this movie, his interpretation is excellent (before the duet is witer and after is spring) It does not matter Papageno without bird cloth.
I do like this duet, however it diverges somewhat from the original. It's supposed to be set in Egypt and not in a cold winter scene. And why isn't Papageno a parrot? I respect Bergman, but this interpretation is just so far off. It sort of reminds me of "Barnen på Frostmofjället".
If I remember right, Tamino is an Egyptian prince. The opera has a lot of egyptian elements in it but I don't believe it has to be set in Egypt itself. But the other responders are right, Papageno is a bird catcher, not necessarily a bird himself.
Ha! I've been looking for this Magic Flute film for a long time. Must have seen it years ago and only today remembered the film maker...watched so much Bergman in my youth I'd forgotten that he'd explored Opera!! The lyrics are pretty close to Schikaneder's... well translated to Swedish of course. I'm sure you can find the German libretto on the internet. Is it anything in particular you would like to have help with though?

on the other hand, i imagine they, too, sing about having a lot of children.
as for the clothes: it's winter and it turns into spring, so the winter clothes are too warm for them... or they just can't keep their hands of each other ;)
or maybe it's to see what's underneath. Papagena has been masked when they first met each other and they have to get to know each other... i mean this simbolically btw :)

Papageno isn't a bird, he's a man who catches birds.
kgus123 3 years ago
yeah, that kinda sounds crazy... "why isn't Papageno a parrot?"
"Vogelfänger" is a bird catcher, not some kind of weird bird species...
as for egypt; it's hardly ever set in egypt, but mostly in a fairy tale land...
scordeteyla 3 years ago
In old French papageno means parrot

and it is still just his name... if your name is Storm or Flower it doesn't really mean that you're that, does it?
