I have the same problem with the same carb only mine is 1987, its your choke. You have to adjust it it should be on the passenger side of your card and it is a round disk about 2 inches in diameter. Thats what was wrong with mine. took care of it once adjusted.
4.2 on wranglers has that common problems. I have a cousin owns a 1988 wrangler with a 4.2. She complains about her 4.2 acting up when warming up, along with emissions. Same problems on 4.2 carberators.
Sound like a huge cam lol

check fuel pump it or clogged fuel filter first but fuel pmup might not be putting our enough pressure to keep up with the new Carb

Maybe a blown motor.

I bet your idle tubes were clogged. It was a common problem with the Carters.

what have you done?./

I replaced the carburetor with a new progressive carb from weber and that solved the problem and helped with mgps greatly.
Before i replaced the carb i took the ecm out of the look (nutter bypass), re did the timing, and tuned the OEM carter carb.

Tell her to research something called "the nutter bypass" helps so much!

i replaced the carb with a weber 32/36, works great now, probably a bad choke coil or carb float

mass air flow sensor maybe?

I was thinking it was more of a choke problem because it sounds fine when warmed up
