I wish I watched this movie with an open mind instead of comparing it to the book. I really enjoyed how the book was told from various points of views and they didn't always line up (especially the Paul/Sean relationship), and I set myself up for disappointment thinking the movie would be like the book.
I like the way Sean tells him "I wish you wouldn't tell me shit like that", as a response to one of the cheapest cliche "I find myself talking to you, when you're not even around".
Although I get the gist of this scene, I looked up the movie and it's just not my kinda thing. But hey, someone is bound to like it more than I do ;-)
What is so catastrophic about that line is that in the Bible it says that man will "know his wife". It was a way of denoting sexual relations, but it meant something more intimate. You know your companion.
Lauren's statement was brought on by witnessing the suicide and never being able to convey what that was like. How could anyone backtrack into her past?
What she concluded was that everyone is alone, and it was Bateman feared. Her chastity, the potential monogamy, could have changed that.
@highwind8124 Wow thank you for clarifying that for me.This scene always struck me as interesting but I thought that was one of the messages of the book/film. "You're not ever gonna know me" is a reaction to human relationships but not a reaction we all agree on.
everyone got there own personal movie and you get to know it no one else...............the best thing if ever seen is ...why didnt any body tall me ...on u tube........you have to see it
@darkhorse008 you couldnt be more right.everyone got there own personal movie and you get to know it no one else...............the best thing if ever seen is ...why didnt any body tall me ...on u tube........you havr to see it
Even more heartbreaking than the dialogue between the two characters in this scene is the undeniable fact of what Bateman actually says.."no one is ever going to know anyone"..not only does that go to Paul, but it applies to every single person. I personally think this was the whole plot of the film, showing how everyone goes through their own problems and issues and no one will truly understand why people act the way they do. This is very deep. Heartbreaking indeed...
@Dresden1065 yes we all use the generic term "know", as in "oh i KNOW john" and "oh i KNOW sarah"...but honestly, how well do we know anyone? parents all the time on television dont even know why their own kids committed suicide..we might know OF someone...but we arent there every single moment of someones life to know how they TRULY feel
love this scene! the music really makes it. also the scene following it when sean walks into the house party and thinks of everyones worst moments through the film. love the music in that scene.
yea! i felt the same way...your kinda like what is going on the whole movie...then this scene just brings it all together, it was definately an emotional scene and made this movie one of my favorites
I wasn´t refering to being able to understand the content of the film. It´s just that in college with all the interactions that take place in the dorms and stuff similar to this movie, one might be able to relate a bit more and remember stuff that happened while at college. That´s all. I kinda phrased it wrong.
everyone can relate to this movie...its all about life and misunderstandings....no one will ever truely know anyone, and its so sad but true..bateman though the girl loved him, the girl thought the guy was waiting for her and loved her, the gay guy thought bateman was falling for him...all because of circumstances, great movie
I wish Van Der Beek would do another role like this one. He is so fantastic in it. This scene and the very last one are my two favorites, not sure which I like better. The music in this one is incredible if you ask me.
Fuck commercials and all the products you try to peddle.
