The game ends later in a volcanic set and you find out that it was all just a dream.

I thought the easiest way (at that part of the game) was to turn on your flashlight and jump on top of one of the boxes. It'd jump at you and not reach while you could smack it with your pickaxe . IT'd run and call it's friends which would eventually kill them all without you being hurt.
Have the dogs had their noses and ears plugged with wax? Dogs rely on smell and sound more than sight. They wouldn't just run past the guy because he was crouched around a corner, especially not when he was lathered with panic-sweat.
They should work on NPC animations so they cooperate with the physics engine more gracefully, cause it looks kinda sloppy and choppy, if you understand what i mean.
I usally just kill all the dogs, much easier that way :D, knock em out with a barrel and when they stand up again hit em with the hammer/axe, repeat until they die
that is actually the point of the game as its a stealth game, what happens is that they give you weapons in order to make u feel protected. your just supposed to sneak around them and hide from them and make distractions to make them go that way and you avoid them. So your smart.
It's a good game. They know how to build up the suspense. Good use of surround sound too. Get ready for some puzzles, but I'd say they make a nice change of pace.

i just bought Penumbra: Overtrue. LOL! i play the game in the middle of the night. i connect the PC to my large 42" HD TV and turn the sound all the way up and turn all the light in my living room. i got shock when i heard a damn loud noise and saw a creep popped out. it's damn scary. but really fun. if you think resident evil and silent hill are scary, try this game. for those who love scary games, this game is a must.

Guns would completely ruin the atmosphere, sorry. This game isn't supposed to be a shooter in any way, in fact they've publically said they try to push this game away from first person shooters.
This game is the best game of this year, no doubt. Very atmospheric and it's actually scary. Scary means NOT like Doom 3 or FEAR, since they aren't scary at all. More like Thief. If you've played the Thief series you know that some levels are scary as hell. THIS is the TRUE "next gen" game, not some unoriginal crappy FPS like Halo 3 or Bioshock. "Next gen" is not better graphics, it's original and innovative gameplay. Just like Penumbra has. And it SHOULD NOT have have guns, it'd ruin the game.
Well, IMO they aren't very good games. There's nothing original or innovative in them. Doom 1 might have been a innovative game, but not Doom 3. FEAR was an OK game, but only that, nothing better.
Maybe... but they aren't innovative... or original... so they don't deserve Game Of The Year title or anything, unlike Penumbra here. ;)
Game Of The Year 2007 = Penumbra: Overture, no doubt about that. Crysis will probably be the second. (Or Assassin's Creed, but it won't be on PC until 2008 so for me at least it doesn't count.)

Will be no doubt the best shooter yet, Far Cry was good and Crysis won't probably disappoint me either. It's truly the only shooter since Max Payne to get me interested in the genre again.
(And since it has undoubtfully the best graphics ever seen in any game yet, it *has* to get 9.5+ scores since all reviewers only care about graphics...)
I have the beta...and...its not cool, I know its a beta and only DX9...but its still ass...vehicles still are gay, but at least the tanks/APC's are cool as in there is actual hit point stuff going on...like hitting the treads...
Well, if you think so... What's so bad about Crysis? It's like any other FPS, but with better graphics, physics and (finally!) improved gameplay. And I don't really care about multiplayer games... so I'll wait until the single player demo is released and judge the game then. But this year really has been a horrible year for gaming, almost no good games have been released.

Believe me, it's 100x times better without guns. If the game would've contained any guns, I just would have thought: "Well this is just another lame FPS-clone, trying to be scary." But now that you're without proper weaponry, you can get really scared when playing Penumbra...
Yes, I suppose this kind of atmosphere does bring out a sense of fear and is more engulfing knowing you are vulnerable at any point but it still could have used firearm weapons that would have been extremely hard to discover. This way it would encourage the player to explore closer and thoroughly. And of course the ammo would be difficult to find as well, forcing the player to conserve it and only using them in difficult situations. It wouldn't feel like a true shoot-em-up at that point.
Maybe. I personally think it's better and more atmospheric without guns, but we'll see in Black Plague. Maybe if you'd get one gun and little ammo, but when you try to use it it won't work, and you need to fix it somehow. Or something like that.
Dud ammunition is an interesting idea, considering the weapons are very old and not in good shape, I like it. Or finding disassembled parts of certain handguns, rifles and shotguns scattered throughout the levels and assembling the right parts together in your inventory to complete a piece. And instead of finding plentiful boxes of ammunition laying around you would find 3 bullets in a drawer, 2 shotgun shells on a shelf etc. etc.
Yeah, as long as they make finding & using guns some kind of puzzle, and ammo *really* rare, it's ok with me.
Maybe if the game encourages you to save the ammo instead of using it, for example you'd have to do a puzzle where you need to shoot something to get to a room that you couldn't normally reach or you'd get extra stuff like medpacks or something.
This game, in addition to what it already has, needs a SPAS 12 Shotgun and more enemies. This is a cool way of defeating the enemy but you still need something for when you are really pissed off and full of adreneline.

Helloween4545 Demonstrated probably the most efficient way of killing the dogs:
1. Throw meat.
2. Sneak up on dog.
3. Hit dog with pickax. Hard.
4. When dog gets up from being smashed in the face, hit it again so it falls down (again) and so cannot run away/call for help
5. Repeat 3-4 until dog is dead.

you obviously dont know the game do ya. in this game, its much more effective to sneak past the enemies seeing as you get only stuff like pickaxes for weps. even then, they move rly slowly as shown in the demonstration...

Woah, Penumbra's definitely improved from when it was just a tech demo. :) Played the demo of Overture and it's awesome. Might actually buy the game if I have the guts... ;)

Guns would completely ruin the atmosphere, sorry. This game isn't supposed to be a shooter in any way, in fact they've publically said they try to push this game away from first person shooters.

This game is the best game of this year, no doubt. Very atmospheric and it's actually scary. Scary means NOT like Doom 3 or FEAR, since they aren't scary at all. More like Thief. If you've played the Thief series you know that some levels are scary as hell. THIS is the TRUE "next gen" game, not some unoriginal crappy FPS like Halo 3 or Bioshock. "Next gen" is not better graphics, it's original and innovative gameplay. Just like Penumbra has. And it SHOULD NOT have have guns, it'd ruin the game.

Well, IMO they aren't very good games. There's nothing original or innovative in them. Doom 1 might have been a innovative game, but not Doom 3. FEAR was an OK game, but only that, nothing better.

Maybe... but they aren't innovative... or original... so they don't deserve Game Of The Year title or anything, unlike Penumbra here. ;)
Game Of The Year 2007 = Penumbra: Overture, no doubt about that. Crysis will probably be the second. (Or Assassin's Creed, but it won't be on PC until 2008 so for me at least it doesn't count.)

Will be no doubt the best shooter yet, Far Cry was good and Crysis won't probably disappoint me either. It's truly the only shooter since Max Payne to get me interested in the genre again.
(And since it has undoubtfully the best graphics ever seen in any game yet, it *has* to get 9.5+ scores since all reviewers only care about graphics...)

I have the beta...and...its not cool, I know its a beta and only DX9...but its still ass...vehicles still are gay, but at least the tanks/APC's are cool as in there is actual hit point stuff going on...like hitting the treads...

Well, if you think so... What's so bad about Crysis? It's like any other FPS, but with better graphics, physics and (finally!) improved gameplay. And I don't really care about multiplayer games... so I'll wait until the single player demo is released and judge the game then. But this year really has been a horrible year for gaming, almost no good games have been released.

Ok. But as I said, for me the single player experience is all that counts. And I don't care about graphics at all, it's all about the atmosphere/immersion and gameplay.
(and BF2 isn't even that good IMO, I prefer BF1942)

Oh? That's just too bad. The game engine has a lot of potential if mixed with FPS. Kind of like Stalker except Stalker doesn't have any puzzle elements in it.

Believe me, it's 100x times better without guns. If the game would've contained any guns, I just would have thought: "Well this is just another lame FPS-clone, trying to be scary." But now that you're without proper weaponry, you can get really scared when playing Penumbra...

Yes, I suppose this kind of atmosphere does bring out a sense of fear and is more engulfing knowing you are vulnerable at any point but it still could have used firearm weapons that would have been extremely hard to discover. This way it would encourage the player to explore closer and thoroughly. And of course the ammo would be difficult to find as well, forcing the player to conserve it and only using them in difficult situations. It wouldn't feel like a true shoot-em-up at that point.

Maybe. I personally think it's better and more atmospheric without guns, but we'll see in Black Plague. Maybe if you'd get one gun and little ammo, but when you try to use it it won't work, and you need to fix it somehow. Or something like that.

Dud ammunition is an interesting idea, considering the weapons are very old and not in good shape, I like it. Or finding disassembled parts of certain handguns, rifles and shotguns scattered throughout the levels and assembling the right parts together in your inventory to complete a piece. And instead of finding plentiful boxes of ammunition laying around you would find 3 bullets in a drawer, 2 shotgun shells on a shelf etc. etc.

Yeah, as long as they make finding & using guns some kind of puzzle, and ammo *really* rare, it's ok with me.
Maybe if the game encourages you to save the ammo instead of using it, for example you'd have to do a puzzle where you need to shoot something to get to a room that you couldn't normally reach or you'd get extra stuff like medpacks or something.

This game, in addition to what it already has, needs a SPAS 12 Shotgun and more enemies. This is a cool way of defeating the enemy but you still need something for when you are really pissed off and full of adreneline.
