  • total lack of sportsmanship from Bill, but it was still a great fight

They are out of your league.

  • he only lost because of that new faggot rule

  • And you don't show respect to your opponent by voicing over how you made the guy your nemesis or trying to make it seem like he didn't fight fair, which he did, unlike you.

    There's nothing Spartan bout you

  • Real Spartans fight on when they're wounded.

  • Maybe Bill was smart to use his weight?

  • bill was not smart for that he wa just way too heavy for the other athlete he's techniques are stupid he wins only by his weight he fought with a guy at least 5 kilos lighter than him

  • What is this? Pankration had no rules. It was a brutal show of force, hence the name "All Power."

  • Οι κριτές είναι Έλληνες!!!!!!

  • unfair weight advantage and no head strikes? bollox

  • Historical Fact: Spartans were the only participants of the Olympics who weren't allowed to participate in pankration. They were build to kill, when in combat the lost touch with the world, their only objective was to kill and kill...

  • @Themis711

"their only objective was to kill and kill"

    and fuck eachother...

  • @CaptainAmerica322

american troll with cultural inferiority issues is trollin'

  • @xtistis88

Nothing about what I sad is trolling. I was just stating fact that homosexuality among the Spartans was common and accepted...

  • @CaptainAmerica322 I think you mixed up the Spartans with the the Thebans and their Sacred Company, two totally different greek cities.

  • @cynicalium Spartans needed to reach a certain age before being alowed to have sex with women(or maybe a certain degree; my memory fails me). Yes, homossexuality was ok between spartans(theres nothing wrong about accepting you're wrong). In face, I doubt most of them lived enough to have sex with women.

Only the veterans could, which basically means only the strongest had the right to have a son. That one of the reasons.

  • @fugitivodoinferno the spartans where not explicitly homosexuals some of them where bisexuals like in other greek cities. They were allowed to get married at around the age of 30 but that doesnt mean that they could not meet women before because the spartan women were quiet free. But what i wanted to say was there was only one ancient Greek troop that was surely homosexual and that was the Theban Sacred Band. They obliterated a Spartan army on July 6, 371 BC.

  • @Themis711 mrabo re agori! to mono swsto comment edw pera!! ELLADA RE!!

  • does anyone know what aris makris the other coach and the referee are saying at 6:08 ???

  • @D34n0Thund3r i dont know to which athlete he is reffering he is saying: he had four strikes. the other guy says yeah but he was outside. then he goes yeah it was outside strike.

  • @D34n0Thund3r they were counting the points

  • I love it how a kick to the face is perfectly legal though.

  • Slamming is illegal? So is punches to the face? Apparently the pankration team is wearing the wrong equipment, they should be wearing skirts.

  • @waynycely91 it would be deadly my friend! The rules are far away from the real ancient pankration...In the ancient times fighters would die and they would keep playing nomatter how many pone they had broke...

  • @bazelobazelos you just missed the point I made entirely and made up you're own subject. I never said to allow death or kill shots. All I said was that theyre being vaginas for not allowing punches to the face or slamming.

  • @waynycely91 okkk!i see...i understand now...you see i am greek so i have a small problem with the comunication...

  • @waynycely91 You are mixing up pygmachia with pankration.

  • does this pankration has anything to do with the ancient greek pankration?

  • Pankration was the ultimate fighting technique.Spartan's fighting style so kung fu TDK and all these shit are for girls..

  • Pankration fighters in Ancient Greece are said to have been able to withstand the pain of multiple misplaced joints and broken limbs and kept on fighting.

There is a documented fight from 556BC, where a pankration champion was held in a submission chokehold, he managed to win the fight by breaking both his opponents feet (by punching them, yes.) while being held in that position, the thing is that he died afterwards due to the lack of oxygen.

Thats what its about, real fighting, real honor.

  • @dolippa

That's all fine and good, but I don't think you can blame people for wanting to function on a basic level, say being able to walk, after a bout, and making rules to ensure that.

Also, I'm not exactly sure how honor figures into "We tried our best to pound each other into broken piles of vaguely human-shaped bodily trauma because it made us feel like manly men (and got us money)."

Sure, this new pankration might be tame and timid, but that's because the people doing it want that.

  • @dolippa really?. doesnt seem to be worth it to die because you wouldnt tap out

  • this version was refined and sanitised by the newly founded pankration associations around the world in order for it to stand a chance of getting accepted in the Olympics. in reality, as someone has already posted, MMA is the much closer to what ancient true pankration was.

  • gringo tramposo

  • did not knwo they had a pankration episodes must watch know nothing of it only heard of it form the historys strongest discple kenichi and i think there moves might have been wrong

  • this reminded me of Rocky I's ending, in which Rocky beats up Apollo but still loses the match...

  • Ancient Greek Warrior Art

  • That looks fun! Might have to see if I can find some Pankration schools in my area.

  • real pankration and muay thai boran are real brutal martial arts

  • real pankration and muay thai moran are real brutal martial arts

  • Ancient Pankration can never be brought back to what it was,mma is the modern day equivalent to pankration.

  • ALOT of "modern" martial arts are VERY much like panlration. good live leads, working the ranges. stand up, clinch and ground work very JKD/MMA/krav marga/realityMA. just goes to show really that there IS a core to the MOST effective strikes and methods in combat. simpler the better. i like to think that if you cover and master "the basics" which we all seem to know now. you can be a very good fighter just by knowing them.

  • This crap isn't a serious martial art. They fight dressed up in historical costumes and in a gym with stone pillars, what's that about? The "champion" acts like a baby when he takes one on the chin. What a joke...

  • What is this bullcrap? Guys dressed up like it's 30 AD, fighting in a gym with stone columns? I find it impossible to take this sport seriously.

  • WHY DOES BILL AWLAYS HIT PEOPLE IN THE HEAD AHHA THIS IS LIKE THE 3RD EPISODE

  • "I was too smart for that"?

No, you are too heavier for that........

  • @vardalos1980 yeah, i wish he would get rid of the cocky commentary 'my spartan grappling skills'

  • @Jamaicanwhiteboy12 Lol, its ridiculus to my eyes, because they going there to learn some technics of some martial arts, but always for them is more important to win the fight..!

  • @vardalos1980 and the fighting itself is so watered down, did you see the fight in the muay thai one? it was weak! watch a real thai fight, theyre brutal!

  • 20 points to him and 18 points to him , just 3 points away for a win. :S

  • @willywth2255 ummmm yep or 2 from a draw?

  • @willywth2255 If we wanted to TIE he would have said 2. He wanted to WIN so he need 3. 18+3=21 (21>20)

    Learn some math kid.

  • In terms of safety and closeness to actual combat this seems like the best Martial Art. What are some other safe and realistic martial arts?

  • @impatboy Krav Maga is arguably the most realistic martial art in existence

  • why dont they show this show any more >:(

  • its sad to see how badly pankration has been watered down and castrated over the years...

  • @mrjesse999

Pankration I read about being an awesome physical contact sport, crossed between Greek Boxing and Wrestling. Now it's just a useless looking sport. No punches to head? No body slams while being pinned? Mayn these guys suck! That's why a t.v. host can beat their ass. (no offense to the t.v. host)

  • @comixgod50 This is the sport version. When you learn pankration you learn how to gouge eyes, rip-off ears and break necks. These are things you can’t do in sports. If they were practicing the real thing, one of them would be dead in 10”. Just like practicing sports kung fu. You can kill in kung fu but you don’t do it in sports.

  • @masterharis

I agree that the real deal is a lot more deadlier, still that doesn't mean that they diluted the martial art a tad too much. They could had downgraded the sport to UFC standards at least. I'm just saying, you get a lot more action and freedom in any other sport combat.

  • They should have had the fight in US. Pankration in the US is more close to the ancient style than it is in Greece (as far as fighting rules go)

  • @ASTERIXISM

MMA is more Pankration than Pankration is. Quite sad.

  • @comixgod50 Thats true.

  • math fail

  • bill always breaks the rules in his final fights

  • kickass, but combat isnt a sport, i'm sure the spartans knew this

  • wow still continuing with a cut on his big toe what a warrior lmao rambo ain't got shit on this guy makes the guys who have fought with broken limbs look like pussy's

  • @gd01902 lol its a cut on his fucking toe,, so what!!

  • @kevinmaj if you read ALL of my comment you'll see that i was being sarcastic!!!

  • @gd01902 alright fair enough,, my bad!!

  • It's Konstantinos not Konstantino...bald guy....and in pankration there are no rules(except to gouge eyes or to bite),points and that kind of shit....it's all about honor and respect to the opponent athlete...even if you kill him...I am just a simple greek who knows some of his great national history...although nice try from the show to present our ancient martial art :)

  • @jmanavis do u use pankration?

  • @OrogDeMalfur yes,i started pankration 10 years ago...

  • 5:27 fake fall.

  • man cant hit him to the head with ur hands...wtf man...pussy ass crap...

  • man ufc fighters wuld own these dudes...no lie...pankration world champion because no one does it.

  • @vespaman101 man im an mma fan here in greece the level of fighting etc is not as high as in us or uk but you have to admire that mma has the same moves as mma an pankration was an ancient fighting style!if here in greece weve had trainers like ruten or i dont know then believe me ufc would be just for fun!and the original pankration is to die no to give up!

  • @heartcore667HxC i noticed. i know what ancient pankration is. That is much like Vale tudo or No holds barred fights. except pankration you can go to the death.

  • @vespaman101 ancient pankration is not till ur opponent diesO_O the greeks had rules too u know??the only thing that is truth is that it was way bloodier.just like greek boxing, lets just say the rules arent the safetiest.

  • @dominicwalli actually they wuld die quite often. u dont have to fight to the death. unless ur a gladiator. but if you gave up it was shameful. so many died.

  • @vespaman101 it wasnt shameful>_>its a olympic sport, its not a samurai fight.ancient greeks dident had that kind of twisted meaning for the word honor.

  • @dominicwalli it was too. during the archaic period.

  • that Pankration "champ" sucks. If it weren't for the sissy rules, Bill would have won easy.

but put Bill against real champs like Anderson Silva or Rampage, he'd be smashed.

  • Excuse me, but the hellenic word "pankration" actually means "prevail against everyone". It derives fron the words pan=every(one) and krato=I win.

  • Comment removed

  • interesting

  • They say 20 points for him and 18 points to him.

just 3 points for a win.

    isn't it 2 points???

    lol

  • 3 points to win!!!!!! with 2 point it would be 20 - 20

  • that would be 2 points for a draw.... it got me for a second there lol

  • 2 points would be a draw...3 would be a win by having one more point...

  • no head punches kind of takes the fight aspect out of it. love martial arts where a simple move like a punch to the face can make the other persons style moot are kind of silly aren't they?

  • el tatami y el lugar son totales q curioso combate

  • fucken this bs, bill is the winner.

  • bill is liek 20-25 kilos heavier than the greek.the spartan showed true warrior spirit.

oh power of judo see that tome nage ino a column!

  • lol this is crap pankration as Riv3len mentioned before pankration was brutal..even the death of your foe was legal

  • @kostaz88 well the death of your foe in any martial arts competition is legal, as long as you don't throw an illegal strike, it probably occured more in greece because they probably had less regulations and didn't play on a mat.

  • @kostaz88 It was actually discouraged though, since dying in a pankration match basically made everyone say "Wow he was tougher than the other guy because he never backed down"

  • @kostaz88 yeah but these days a sport where you can kill the other guy doesn't tend to be socially acceptable :L

  • @kostaz88 Although clearly you haven't done your research; killing your opponent resulted in your opponent posthumously winning the match, if he died, he would win; as his honor was preserved by him not giving up.

The goal of Pankration was to get as close to killing your opponent without killing your opponent.

  • @kostaz88 i agree. there are no rules in OG pankration. this is like the watered down brazilian jiu-jitsu you see in tourney fighting: its good stuff, but not the full on real deal.

  • it is obvious tha bill has a big advantage... he is at least 20 klios fatter than the champion who is 93 kilos as it written to the wpaf!!!!!! i believe that kontantinos did very well against bill....

  • Pankration is actually the oldest form of MMA. The only thing that they cant not do, but is allowed is strikes and elbows to the face. I am part of a pankration team and this is the best way to get involed in MMA

  • Bill was actually pretty good, he doesn't normally get to fight because Jason talks him out of it, but he did a really good job in this fight, seemed like he dominated.

  • Love this program, unlike half the people here im not going to lie about how much of a tank i am, i just like the history aspect.

  • That is why I always says less rule more protection. If all competitors wear full helmet than head strike can be legal. Bill won this fight BTW.

  • is pankration categorized as mma ?

  • It's different from MMA because it is an original martial art from Greece.

  • Actaully, according to wikipedia, the root words mean "All powers" which would mean something more like using every part of the body. MMA is a derivative fighting system that takes from many different styles like muay thai and karate, where Pankration is a mix between simple grappling and boxing.

  • "All powers" is right and it's basically meaning that every style of fighting is acceptable. Fighters from all over the world would come to take part and there were no rules or systems that they had to conform to. They were just put togther and fought in any way which was best for them. Remind you of anything?

MMA is not a fighting system in the way which you described it and your interpretation of Pankration is also wrong.

  • Yeah umm, not that you said it but UFC isn't MMA. Also UFC isn't all as amazing as people say it is, but yeah, UFC fighters really do their own kinda martial art, not mixed styles. UFC kinda swayyed away from MMA, which is why all of them look the same now. What needs to happen in martial arts in general is go back to how it used to be. I mean karate even went from beating a swordsman and having actual combat use to what it is now. Pankration also do the same, it weakened over time.

  • @LightxKira5643 its still mma mma is a sport. and its cros training that leads to winning. but look at keither jardine copared to how rashad fights compared to how brock lesnar fights. but many styles arent as useful in full contact fighting. so they get butted out. the strict form in many martial arts just wont cut it most the time.

  • He should have jersey'd him in the second round. Awesome though.

  • it's like ancient MMA

  • "they'r going to add up the points to see who won."

oh why thank you smart one.

  • Bill Duff would have made a deadly greek warrior in ancient times.

  • this is not real pankration its just a thing that was invented by some federation and took the name pankration...And i am Greek saying this. The pankration sport was the most brutal and most anticipated sport in the olympics this is just crap. Some jujitsu like techs wearing greek like robes

  • I agree on a part.Pankration was banned since byzantine times i think, so no-one can claim to be a true master-tutor-sensei or whatever of this martial art.But... as described by ancient writers, it has many jujitsu & kickboxing techniques.

  • So.. why not using the same principals-techniques (which exist in judo-jujitsu-boxing-kickboxing) in order to re-invent it?

  • this is not reinventing jimman this is harassing and taking advantage of the name of my forefathers' ancient martial art to ake money and get this in the olympics to get money.Pankration was brutal and was the actual training for combat not adding points and not hurting your pretty face.

  • I agree about the money, indeed it can offer alot to the foundation which re-invented it,but how else would a man learn a style that seized to exist if not by these pankration re-inventors?

  • First of all it did not exactly seized to exist as it was basically a combination of boxing and wrestling but we also know they used their legs so it was actually a no rule beating. But if it was learned for actual combat use as we know it had techniques. Those tecniques cannot be claimed to be known from vases and scripts. They can only be assumed so the name of this reinvented sport shouldn't refer to actual pankration just because of the greek like robes

  • yes.OK. let's call it "Pankration elements" then. The techniques are like this:some straight boxing, some kind of kickboxing, some elements of Greco-roman wrestling, and some jujitsu-like chokes-grabs-locks maybe.those are what we know.wright?

  • totallly agree,i think pankration cannot be considered a real martial art, cause its more like a philosophy; "beat the shit out of him no matter what" the only rules it had were " no fingers to eyes, mouth, nose, or bitting.

  • there is no philosophy in pankration! if there was any,it would be the philosophy of the jungle

  • well thats what i meant, take you down no matter what

  • They way it was ment to be, but do to the fact of brain injuries, breaking of backs, and loss of family jewls, they made some more rules. Thank God for rules in compatition, it keeps you from getting seourly hurt so you can fight when it really counts.

  • yes but thats cause they converted it to a sport, but it takes away most of the true agression and hitting and leaves a Wrestling-like style that seeks points more than body damage

  • Very true, you are right. Personaly I would rather have rules so I can be fit to fight when really needed, but it does take away from it. It's a give and take, I guess weather it is worth it is up to the indavidual.

  • yea ur right, but my point is that with rules, pankration loses its essence; Freeform, thats the true strength in pankration.

  • Yea, we just need some really brave guys with the help of God so they don't get there brains beatin in and we are good :)

  • that was gay. Bill won that fight

  • yeah but they didnt want the world champion to get beat by some noob

  • true say

  • the toe injury wasnt even that bad

  • Real Pankration watch?v=WDb1piP6kcc

  • oh 18 plus 3 is 21 so yea that means he would have won 20 n 20 would have been a no win

  • the judge said he had 20 points and bill had 18 points but bill said he was 3 points away??

  • innit, what an idiot

  • yes. 18 + 3 equals 21. If bill had 3 more points he would have won since 21>20.

  • καλα τον γαμησε ο δικος μας, 20-18

    κωλοαμερικανε...

  • I love the fact the Spartans allowed biting gouging :) Lol, ahh those Spartans....a whole nation of Special Forces.

  • 2:41

  • guys, look at this on the bright side;

the ancient Greeks used to do this naked!

for those of you complaining about the bad quality of the fighters......

  • The hell with MMA; if I had to become "well-rounded" I'll just take up Pankration.

why bother with the new stuff; the ancient Greeks were smarter, and they used this stuff in actual battles.

Not only that but the MMA arsneal is too extensive for my tastes, I need something simple.

  • realistically speaking, Bill Duff just slaughtered the guy, he just got a lot of deduction for it. So Bill's experience beat Constantino, he's just not as good at following the modern pankration rules

  • Weren't you paying attention? Duff received ancient Greek Pankration training, which allowed punches to the face. Modern Pankration only allows kicks because, believe it or not, kicks to the had are medically safer; it takes many punches, e.g. much brain rattling, to knock a guy out, a single kick does it in one hit. Better a single shocking hit, than having your brain rattled, there IS a medical reason for that rule.

  • Also I would not be planning on sport pankration training; to seriously take on an MMA guy, I would want to do the brutal, ancient stuff.

  • this stuff definately NOT the way the old greeks did it. They practically killed eachother, and if you're not going to fight someone on a battlefield, there's no reason to train like that

  • Oh no, they still use ancient training methods (what little has been unearthed), but not ANCIENT TOURNAMENT methods. There's a difference; just because you train the ancient way, that does not mean you COMPETE the ancient way. Again remember, they ancient did this stuff naked. Be thankful for modern athletic equipment! The ancient world was great but not everything. Could you live without a modern toilet or bathroom?

  • You have to keep in mind how difficult it is to override your instincts. You can KNOW the rules, but if you're used to operating under a different rules system, that tends to break down under pressure and you revert to what you're conditioned to do. Bill can't be expected to reprogram his instincts in such a short period of time. I think he did well, considering.

  • The Greek was better, Bill didn't play by the rules and Konstantinos got some blows to the face he didn't expect. And he still won.

  • Real pankration dont have rules

  • he said american muslce always wins you americans are so fucked up now russian muscle always wins idiots man even in fights you guys think that ure the best whel youre not you suck hail fedor emilianenko

  • Well Americans do tend to win like 60% of the time in the UFC, rivaled only by Brazilians (followed up by a few Japanese, Canadians, and a few others), so yeah, those Americans who think they're the best are pretty much correct. Sucks when another country is the best at almost everything doesn't it?

  • that's because most fighters are americans :D:D

  • America lost to Russia last year in the M-1 Global Tournament

  • not just ufc but all of MMA

  • What happend to this show?

  • O and Pankration was probably used in real combat. Even though the Greek vs Greek wars were ceremonial,it was still real. Phalanxs ALWAYS fell apart and one would assume you would use youre Pancrase to kcik someones ass once it fell apart (only the spartans were renowned for not breaking their Phalanxs). Also it would be stupid to suggest the Greeks didnt teach Indians Pancraktion...There culture ha a huge influence on INdia...why not their belove martial art?

  • Phalanxes always fell apart?!? WTF are you talking about? Alexander's phalanxes never fell apart. Not once. Also, every time the Persians invaded they lost to greek phalanxes. Pankration was used by the 300 Spartans in combat when the phalanxes broke at Thermopylae for sure.

You're correct in saying pankration spread to India (via Alexander), and with Buddhism India brought martial arts to China which developed into Kung Fu. Pankration was the great grandfather of all martial arts.

  • Pankration needs some serious reforms. I am greek but i can tell you these guys cant really fight for shit. They need to really improve their ground game and need to start rolling properly. Second of all they need to eliminate the costume.

I understand Pankration was the foundation of practically all martial arts Greece -> India -> China -> Japan -> Brazil, but they seriously need to reform it if people are to take it seriously. ATM i think i can win the world title as a purple belt in BJJ.

  • You have to remember that this isn't actual pankration. Pankration died out almost 2000 years ago when a Byzantine Emperor put an end to the ancient Olympics. There is no lineage of pankratists or anything, it's a lost art which we can only make educated guesses about now.

  • he is to heavy for that small greek

  • this is a lucky guess or an approximation to what oancration used to be. to me the first "system" taught and probably the father of all martial arts. to my dissapontment though Greece had to find its identity in the martial arts world and has done so by the worst way one can imagine.a blend of history and pride, some kickboxing a little bit of legend and then some throws and here we have "modern pancration"..we should have done better than this.(comment from someone that comes from greece)

  • 1:30 doggy style :D

  • I always liked this human weapon show..they had another show similar that came on the airways shortly after this show stopped but this series WAS and IS the best! I always liked Bill...
