I think it is a little fast, but I actually like it at a leisurely walk, not at a funereal pace. If you look back, we have romanticize a lot of the tempo in our classical pieces.
I have an electronic metronome, and according to it this performance is moving at eighth note = 112; this is NOT an Andante, rather a real Andantino. The name of the piece is ANDANTE and Variations; perhaps there is something wrong with the YouTube playback? I prefer eighth note = 84.
Do you know where can I find more recordings of these variations of Haydn? its so beautiful but i could listen to only this one. THANK YOU for your help.
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on being Baching Mad on Classical Music Composer trading cards (issued in 1912): Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and many more included.
My first impression is that it's a bit too fast for the essence of the piece to be realized. It's faster than most of the recordings I know of this piece -- Rubinstein, Paderewski, and others.
What an inspired performance. I'm surprised to hear much rubato at the end of phrases but they work quite well. I like the sustained pensive mood, even at the dramatic conclusion. The lingering effects allow the music to breathe. Bravo!

What is the tempo marking? Isn't it Andante? This is one fast walk.

Whole step up normally, but you can notate it differently if you please.

God, every time I hear an excellent reading of this piece, I am absolutely amazed at how advanced this composition was for its time.
