i agree with you about all the psych medicine they sometimes give you as if it is going to change the real you. all those meds did for me was dull the senses a little. I ended up just discontinuing them.
I am majoring in philosophy as well, right now I am going for my bachelors degree. I go to Mount Saint Mary's University in Maryland. Philosophy departments are going away in a lot of schools it seems. When I went for my orientation day, I was the only one there that was majoring in the subject. It is nice to see that I am not alone. I wish you the best in your life as a woman.
haha. (not about the serious stuff, but that first thing u said was funnny) I cry too much that's why i cant wait for T. I think it's good to have a really supportive friend with you, but not a lover. I posted a vr on your GID video about the topic of mental or physical. Also, you get discriminated against on utube.
This was a very good set of videos. You made your point and sis not have an attitude. If this is also the way you teach then you make a wonderful teacher and your students are lucky to have you.
I have WAY too many comments to type up now, but I'll say 1) enjoyed the videos, 2) learned some stuff from this set of 4, 3) it seems clear to me (as can be determined from 30 minutes of videos) you are female, from what you say, your past experiences, and how you act and look, 4) you're fun, smart, adorable, and discuss these things well.
"...this woman on a bus-- THIS AFRICAN-AMERICAN LADY NO LESS-- who would think that someone else who also gets discriminated against would discriminate against me?"
Um wut.
Why the double standard? Privilege (and bigotry) isn't all homogeneous; white trans people can be just as racist as white cis people, and cis people of color can be just as transphobic as cis white people.
Ashley's right! Those who are descriminated against can be even wors. A TG friends of mine heard a homeless in the street say "Yikes, it's a trans!" I mean, you a homeless ragamuffin! Who's deep in shit here?! You souldn't go out and cry, Ashly! You should have put her into the place where she belongs! I always do!
Yeah you are totally right. I guess my expression had to do with someone not having any empathy. I hold myself to a high standard of empathy, I don't expect the rich white guy to have empathy since he can't even understand the concept of "being discriminated against". But the rich white guy is awful on a whole bunch of other counts. I guess I would say the problem is even more heterogenous then you outline.
I believe that it's not that American blacks or whites have any genetic predisposition to act differently, but rather culturally they express themselves differently. From what I've seen, and I can only go on experience, blacks might be more vocal about homophobia, while whites would prob have the same amount of prejudice too, but cover it up more.
relationships are always tough when transitioning.
i would love to be with someone now but know that im still finding myself and with my sexuality still up and down i try to stay clear of thinking about it.
i dont mind being with either sex just as long as i am happy in life....
You want to know about my research!? I do work in practical reason, particularly the constructivist picture as developed by Korsgaard in response to Williams. I'm also interested in Kant, Nietzsche, Rawls, Foucault more generally as rights theorists. I also have a soft sport for gender studies.
This is kinda random, but, I was wondering if you ever considered another difficulty with relationships aside from being a transwoman, youre an intellectual woman. Unfortunately I doubt that the patriarchy is now in complete and equal balance with a matriarchy, even in america. I was wondering if you ever considered some men might actually be intimidated by youre intelligence. You probably wouldn't date them, I guess, and that's again limiting. Higher learning isn't for everyone!
Yeah and it sucks, especially because intellectual guys tend to be pricks. I want to date an everyday guy who I can have a conversation with every once in a while, but isn't going to want to be constantly arguing with me about philosophy.
Ashley: I think you make a good point about relationships during transition. However, as we both have agreed, everyone is unique. I met a guy just after I started living full time as F, and he stayed with me through the whole process, hormones, electrolysis, surgery, etc. It has been 31 years and we're still together. That's how it worked out for me.
Ashley: I really liked your answer as to what appeals to you about being a woman. I agree with you: it is what I am and who doesn't need to "be themselves?"
I couldn't agree more with you about the relationships thing. Expanding on what you said, it is also not a good idea to be in a relationship mid-transition, as transition itself is an extremely selfish period for us...we couldn't possibly give our partners the attention they also need. Transition is our time, and to bring someone else in would be a mistake.
I concur. Even at post-transition it may still require time to work out the identity issues acquired over years and years. Us FtMs don't even necessarily have 'post-transition' and that may always be complicated. Its not to say that one should avoid living life, however, proceed with caution (with particular consideration to the other person). Difficult also, mid-transition with 'hormones raging' I know T completely knocked me off my rocker for a while.
I wasn't expecting a reply any sooner anyway. I know you're busy; hope I'm not too distracting. You know that you really ought to consider this one. Have some fun thinking about it in the meanwhile. That's an order.
