A microcosm of the whole movie. At the heart of it, a very beautiful message is ignored in favor of semantics. Irritates me to no end when the movie is used as pro- or anti-religion propaganda.
@rjs9 I think that goes with the territory though...and I think it's also pointless the deny the hugely satirical basis for a lot of the comedy.
Yes, it should be understood for the purely comedic origin of the film (Jesus Christ, Lust for glory)..but it's also one of the best satires of a subject that I've ever seen.
This movie is an atheist's dream! It doesn't get any funnier that this. The Python crew really hit the ground running when they made this film.

The most enigmatic line in film history; "to them only shall be given...." I have spent all my time trying to find the ending of that line....

"That's a nice gourd."
"What?"
"How much do you want for the gourd?"
"I don't, you can have it."
"Have it?"
"Yes. Consider the Lillies-"
"Don't you want to haggle?"
"No. -In the fields."
"What's wrong with it then?!"

The Monty Python team might well have read Paul Lafargue's 'The Right To Be Lazy' (1883) Chapter 1

My favorite line in almost any movie: "Blessed are they who convert their neighbor's ox, for they shall inhibit their girth."
