Its sad that so many dont realize this still goes on. Yes there is help, but not enough help. People expect soldiers to return home get the medical attention for a quick fix many dont. Many self medicate and cover up because depression is considered weak. Then when people walk past the drug addicted person on the street they think they are nothing yet 3/4 homeless in this country are veterans. But they get shamed regardless because no one realizes the pain they carry with them till death.
It's hard for me to feel sorry for people like Mr. Whipple. As cold-hearted and horrible as that sounds, that's what I feel. I do feel sorry for him....but I don't in another way. It's hard to explain. I feel sorry that he's hurting the people around him by not getting help but I don't feel sorry for him because he won't get help. GAAH. Complicated.
survivor's guilt; it is terrible what our soldier's have to go through, and the soldiers of other countries. Then trying to hide his pain with an addiction; drugs, alcohol, food, etc. God bless the soldier, may he give them peace and understanding, it's not God's way it is the way of mankind.
My brother's been different since he went to Iraq the first time. He's more reserved than ever, and I can't get him to talk about ANYTHING that happened there, not even good stuff. I've never seen a face more closed than his whenever I try to talk about it.
Now he's in Afghanistan. If they keep trying hard enough, the Army will manage to take him from his family completely-even tho he still lives.
I'm sure he taught him when he went to visit, when he was going to earn some redemption. Then committed suicide on the way back after he had some more morphine.
i was actually thinking before that one cannot live like that without professional help and in those days that was not available..... and in many countries still is not.... i just wish that some day some generation will figure it out to live without
so sad...mrs. wipple and her son hadnt seen each other in soooo long to only have spent such a short time together. but i also would like to know how he got under that tree
i'll only be guessing but i think he crashed his wagon to the tree and it tipped over and pinning him under it. maybe he is still under the influence from the drug and his horse is not hitched to his wagon after colliding with the tree.
how tragic and sad...drug addiction is still the same today as it was back then.. it only helps for a little while and destroys lives. thank God we have better ways of dealing with it today..
There were no federal drug control laws in the United States until 1904 (The law went into effect in 1905). That law was established because of widespread morphine addiction.
i was surprised this episode didn't get a quick-fix happy ending. Very realistic and well done, but sad...
