  • Prokofiev died in 1953, 50 minutes before Stalin. Stalin's death virtually obliterated the news of Prokofiev from the media, and when the composer was buried, there were no flowers, because all had been used for Stalin's state funeral. Richter laid one pine bough and Oistrakh played two movements of this Sonata. The performance would be poignant anyway, but that historcal fact adds to it.

  • I love Prokofiev. 3:05 and 4:55 : such beauty…

  • Beautiful minds performing together - balance is perfect between the two roles

  • Avere Richter e Oistrach insieme, nella sonata n. 1 di Prokofief è un grande privilegio. Grazie per averci offerto questa chicca. Questo movimento, in particolare è di una intensità unica: emozionante.

  • Большое спасибо!

    Thank you!

    Vielen Dank!

  • this whole piece is sublime, the section from 4:55 onwards fills me with a unique sadness every time i hear it

  • That's the wind in the graveyard bit - bells in the piano part, wind rushing past the gravestones in the muted violin

  • This video is an unique treasure. Wonderful and Thanks ...

  • What a remarkable document...and performance. Thank you so much for the posting!

  • Thank you so much for posting this-amazingly beautiful and so glad I had the opportunity to hear this..just amazingly beautiful!

  • Exquisite.

  • 2nd & 3rd mvt now on YT

  • where?

  • thank you so much for posting this !

is there a way to see the 3 others movements ?

  • Yes, if you can figure out how to go back in time

  • i just suppose that if the first movement has been filmed the others have surely been too ...

  • a musical highlite of historical dimensions. i miss both of them very much.

  • Powerful!

  • Gives me goosebumps, thanks!

  • Do you have the other movements? Would make my day if you posted them

  • 2nd mouvement now on YT, rest will follow

  • Been listening to this for an hour straight. This is Prokofiev at his very best. This is op.80, don't forget that op.82-84 are the war sonatas, the mighty piano sonatas #6-7-8, a monument, IMO the summit of piano litterature.

This is the infinitely inspired, mature Prokofiev showing the world he is, simply put, the best.

What is there to say about this interpretation? Tears come to my eyes, that's about it. It's supreme artistry.

  • You'll have to check this... but recall reading that even though he started this sonata as opus 80, it was actuall one of the last pieces he finished (I'm pretty sure he finished the first sonata after transcribing 94b for violin). You can really hear the maturity in the music...

  • thank you for this, i didnt know it existed

  • Thanks for posting but isn't this sonata 1 ?

  • this too is my favorite violin sonata. i suspect that someday before i die, i may be satisfied with my performance.

i'm a student of the Oistrakh school and each time i hear him perform, i realize that i will be for life. ; )

  • Friends of the composer drawing a marvellous mystery from the piece. Would love to hear the entire piece by these great masters and excellent collaborators. Thanks so much for posting!
