The European concept of property rights was one of the biggest damages to women's rights. The communal ownership to private ownership debate ignores the fact that land rights were generally matrilineal. When these rights were destroyed, most of the power was taken from women. Worse was what was put in place! Women were reduced to being chattel like European women at the time, but with brown women at the bottom of the social ladder imposed by the new male centred religious and legal system.
