  • It's so Coltrane. I mean, it's an alto, but there's no doubt about who that is. I think that's one of the most beautiful things about the saxophone.

  • This is... sigh. What's the point in trying to say anything. Really.

Ok. Just this. The landmark melody sounds WONDERFUL on alto sax.

  • I wanna hear Coltrane on Bari... lol... That would be so sick...

  • Thanks for this rarity, praguedive!

  • @rogerjazzfan - Most people don't know about all those great Impulse! recordings. Most of my Impulse! vids only get a 1000 views a year. Compared to the rates those Blue Note albums recieve, that really isn't all that mutch.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked it. It's my favorite Trane recording, really.

  • ive never heard him on alto before he turely is the greatest saxophonist who has ever touch the instrument nothing against The mr parker

  • @jmet718 If you want early "stable" (even though he was considered less stable then) Coltrane on alto, check out Gene Ammons All Stars on "Groove Blues" with the title track, where you'll hear a noticeable sound coming from that alto sax; it's John Coltrane. Great stuff. I love Coltrane with a passion!

  • Praguedive - trhanks so much for these. The 1961 versions of My Favorite Things are everywhere on youtube playlists. I have only discovered this and the version from Graz in the last few days. This, in particular is brilliant, breathtaking, adventurous and with better sound than the Olatunji Last Recordings cd

  • I really hate the usual sound of the alto sax (like Charlie Parker's playing), but this makes you wonder why Trane didn't play alto more often. Arguably the greatest sound he ever created.

  • I have to admit that this alto solo by Mr. Coltrane is one of the greatest alto solos of all time. However, his musical understanding of Parker (beyond what you and I can hear) and his musical love for Bird would not allow him to upstage his musical hero. John could have mastered and innovated any instrument. He chose to concentrate on the tenor, maybe because the sound of that horn is closer to the sound of his voice. For me, his beautiful tenor sax sounds are from a higher spiritual plane.

  • @Praguedive are you saying that you don't like Charlie Parker or the way he plays though. I do agree with you though when you say that on alto people seem to just emulate parker's sound and not develop their own personal sound as many do on the tenor. That said I do love Charlie Parker.

  • @vandoren59 I don't like alto in general because of the high sound. I also can't appreciate really fast playing (combined with that sound), so that's why I mentioned Bird. I'm sure Parker is one of the greatest ever, he's just not the one for me. Btw, Trane doesn't sound like Bird here at all, does he?

  • @Praguedive Ah ok. Sorry I mistook you there. But yeah I have to agree with you. I'm a tenor player myself. And I double up on soprano as well as a couple of other things.. But I've never really had an interest in picking up the alto or gigging it... I haven't played my alto for about 15 years! I find the sound too high and piercing. But yeah I totally agree with you. Trane has his own original sound on alto. Sounds great. Shame he didn't play his alto more. Makes a truly great sound on it....

  • @Praguedive

I agree with you, alto tends to grate on my ears

  • Great !
