if you don't want to RROD to happen, just take the xbox apart, remove the heat insulators, replace them with a 2 pence coin, wrapped in electrical tape, and stick it down with thermal glue where the patches were. (almost) guanteed no RROD

I Just cover it with a blanket and let it red ring for about 3 mins .. Then turn off and turn on without taking blanket off .. Then it should turn on .. Let it overheat By leaving the blanket on And then when your screen goes black take off blanket and unplug xbox from wall And then plug back in and it should pop up a Screen about overheating and it will work just fine until you turn it off again... ;)

@mycaramey and that still doesnt change the fact that its thermal pastes suck ass and its gonna screw up again... and it probly wont even work. But fixing rrod with heat gun and so on works fine. Though ps3 is so much easier to fix but i've fixed both.

If heating it up or slapping it doesn't work, then you'll have to send it in :( that it is unless you're proficient enough with the hardware to take it apart and replace the heat sink yourself

you have to take the xbox apart and reapply new heat sync grease, that is the defect with the 360, the grease dries up and it overheats and automatically shuts off to prevent damage... please watch this video /watch?v=4wa05IgHr2s&feature=r­elated the grease can be found at radioshack. i just did this to mine and it worked. thumbs up this so people dont support microsofts screw ups by buying a new box. hope i helped
