There are few white singers out there who have gained that credibility as truly soulful, mature singers after having been so linked to previously being teenybopper and "safe".

Not to diminish the duo, I still think that Wham! was light years ahead in quality above New Kids On The Block or Take That or Backstreet Boys or N'Sync because they (namely George) wrote all their own songs. But in terms of their impact on a teenybopper audience, Wham! was really the first white group to really unashamedly cater to it.

Even though Wham! was formed by the two themselves and they did write their own songs and Andrew did play guitar, they were mainly known for shaking their booties in short-shorts. Duran Duran, despite their huge teenybopper appeal, was more a band because they all played their own instruments and were a firm part of the British New Romantic scene.
