The first version I ever heard of this song was Lorrie Morgan's from "Mama's Hungry Eyes: A Tribute To Merle Haggard" (1994). She changed "I" to "you" making the song about some one else (obviously meaning her late husband Keith Whitley). I think the song works better that way.
Merle was about 29 years old here. It's Ralph Mooney on steel, one of his greatest performances. There was a great movie in the 60's starring Jack Lemmon "The days of wine and roses". Hag!!!
merle not only has to be the best thing to happen to country music, he also has to be one of the best men that ever lived. even with his problems, in both life and marriage, he still treated everyone with respect and honor. I am proud that in my life i was compared to him in my music and ways. I just wish I could spend some time with him and write a song or two with him.
Haggard's songwriting was beginning to blossom and audiences embraced his music, sending his "I Threw Away the Rose" to number three early in 1967, beginning a remarkable streak of 37 straight Top Ten hits, including 23 number one singles. "I Threw Away the Rose" was followed by four straight number one hits "Branded Man" "Sing Me Back Home," he Legend of Bonnie and Clyde," and "Mama Tried," at wass what really started off hs career. According to Google
I just absolutely totally adore this song. I have the original on an old LP and heard some girl sing it on a CD a few years ago that I bought. This is almost Gospel in some ways.

its amazing how clean his voice was in the early days..just effortless perfection.

@Hagfan789 I think his voice was still the same even when he got older, it's still effortless.

@GeneRoberts61 Absolutely. That music is just soft rock or pop as far as I'm concerned.

Love to here Bonnie in the background. I think this was just before she left old Buck and took up with Merle

They were referring to Merle's age when he recorded this. It was about 40 years ago.

Does anyone know who is playing steel guitar? Is Floyd Cramer playing piano?
thekeyboardologist 2 years ago
Could be the great Norm Hamlett on steel. Not sure who's on the keys, but Floyd Cramer was a God.
