When I was 16 I was nearly 180 pounds, and an avid athlete. I could physically take on many adults twice and three times my age. If the 16 year old had a knife and stabbed a police officer, unfortunately, to ensure the safety of the officer's own life, deadly force had to be used. Age should not be a discriminating factor on whether or not the officer had the right to defend his own life. Its tragic, but its reality. Even more tragic is this 16 yr old's parents' idea of an upbringing. Sad.

I think alot of people are missing key points from the video. The officer and student were in an office (for reasons that havn't been disclosed in this video), the student attacked the officer (we don't know what his motive was) and the officer shot and killed him. There is not enough evidence to really come to any conclusions. I would ask if providing such little information makes this news report morally incorrect. Perhaps news sources should wait until they have the whole story.

Every Officer involved shooting is investigated, and usually by an agency other than the one the officer works for. In most states the investigation is brought in front of a Grand Jury made up of 12 independent citizens who will decide if the officer was in fact justified in using deadly force or if the officer did something wrong. The system is set up for the PEOPLE to have the final say on the actions of the Police Officer!

The reason officers don't carry less lethal around standard is because it takes careful aim to be able to stop an offender. If someone is threatening your life, you use something that can end his. Also, a 5 year old's physical and mental capacities are vastly different from that of a 16 year old. (hence 5 yr olds don't have licenses). When I was 16 I was nearly 180 pounds, and an avid athlete. I could physically take on many adults twice and three times my age. If the 16 year old had a knife and stabbed a police officer, unfortunately, to ensure the safety of the officer's own life, deadly force had to be used. Age should not be a discriminating factor on whether or not the officer had the right to defend his own life. Its tragic, but its reality. Even more tragic is this 16 yr old's parents' idea of an upbringing. Sad.

I think alot of people are missing key points from the video. The officer and student were in an office (for reasons that havn't been disclosed in this video), the student attacked the officer (we don't know what his motive was) and the officer shot and killed him. There is not enough evidence to really come to any conclusions. I would ask if providing such little information makes this news report morally incorrect. Perhaps news sources should wait until they have the whole story.

Every Officer involved shooting is investigated, and usually by an agency other than the one the officer works for. In most states the investigation is brought in front of a Grand Jury made up of 12 independent citizens who will decide if the officer was in fact justified in using deadly force or if the officer did something wrong. The system is set up for the PEOPLE to have the final say on the actions of the Police Officer!

ok, this kid must have been white because the sympathy and blame put on the police officer speaks volumes. you know and i know had the kid been black or hispanic many of you would be unleashing a tirade of racial slurs against the kid especially down there in South Carolina of all places! it sucks that this kid is dead who obviously needed help and it is equally sad that this officer had to take this kids life.

He didn't kill a "child", he killed a fully concious and well aware violent individual, who engaged him with violent entent. Now when someone attacks you you can stand there and die, but the officer took his full right to defent himself.

The officer surely couldn't have used less lethal weaponry on him even though the public goes through all the trouble of equipping and training the officers with less lethal weapons. It makes perfect sense to just shoot him; he was a "fully conscious violent individual" anyway, right? stfu

The reason officers don't carry less lethal around standard is because it takes careful aim to be able to stop an offender. If someone is threatening your life, you use something that can end his. By the way I am 17 and perfectly mature enough to know that if I try and take a life, I should be prepared to loose mine, especially if I am stupid enough to try and take the life of a POLICE OFFICER.

@piccolom86 Once a sharp object has penetrated you, you don't think to yourself "Oh my I must find a way to disable this briggand." You are so hyped up on adrenalin that you can not think. If it happened to you, you would throw your hands up in defence until he finished you off, but since this officer has had proper training, his subconcious fell back on it and he pulled his weapon as fast as he could, aimed center mass, and pulled the trigger until his assailant was down.

@lousaffire So columbine was just a learning experience? Mistakes have consequences. Breaking a TV or staining a rug are some mistakes you make as a kid. Trying to kill someone is not just some slap on the wrist offence. There is no constitutional age requirement and if a 5 year old were to try and kill me, I would defend myself.

You think that just because kids don't usually know the reality of what they are doing, they are void of consequences. As far as your argument, I never said that America has not made mistakes, but your argument against america is straying from the point being argued. Just because children are children, they are not excused from the law. If you would like parents to do a better job, then fine, but do not defend an individuals consequences due to his action just because he is young.

The free market handled these things fine before government regulation and programs came into play. If you couldn't afford to send a child to school, then you wouldn't have one, and if you needed medical services from professionals you had money put aside. Healthcare is in high demand, so it is more expensive. If you want to make your own business with cheaper rates, then go ahead, make a profit (too bad it costs alot to become a doctor). You can't remove consequences from life, THAT is immoral.

@IamaRifle and yes, being beholden to a government is an awful feeling, especially when you can never truly say what politions are up to until its too late, but do not forget that the social contract is that the government serves society, and teh only way todo that is to hold there feet to the fire, we have a hard enough time with that and were not in a two party system, you are so its almost impossible, but thats why the romans used the republic and senate system, to maintain power.
