I am a fan of safe arms and steves comments but I have to say that the clunkers program was not a complete failure. I've worked in sales in the auto industry and a lot of theis info was biased. Some of the top ten cars bought in return for their clunkers were Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus. In a matter of 30 days my entire inventory of 4 cyl cars as wells as my neighboring competitors(toyota & honda) were sold out. The maximum rebate was $4500 not $6000.

it's amazing how my 1985 buick regal DID NOT qualify for this (by a mere 30-something cubic inches for the engine LOL). Lost out on a new car and then the Regal finally kicked the bucket and now I'm car-less.

From the moment I heard about the C4C program I knew it was going to be a bust. I kept my "clunker" a reliable 96 Honda Civic that gets at least 30 miles a gallon...oh yeah, it's been paid off for years!

A lot of the cars ended up in salvage yards to be parted out. BUT before they left the dealership the engines were destroyed (the most valuable part of the car). So the salvage yards ended up with so many vehicles that cost more to dismantle than they were worth and lots of them got crushed.

well not sure where you got your facts from would i like to read them. but a straight 6 engine such as a the ford 300 or the Chevy 292 had lower maintenance and better reliability then anything today.

in imports the VW 1.9 diesel could and ran 500k miles before needing a rebuild the VW got close to 39MPG if not more. todays cars a designed to last 5 years to force people to get a new cars and trucks. parts cost more and you need to go to a certified mechanic to get the work done. the older vehicles if you had basic grasp of mechanics

you could repair it yourself at a lower cost. parts then were made to be rebuilt not thrown away. plus any old car or truck was east to re-tune to get better MPG. todays unless you have the program and the right computer it wont happen.
