This is not what i expected, i was hoping from the starting stage till the primer stage, not a truck that has already been half sanded or something. im new i wana learn, thumbs up if your with me !
@CaseyMcLaughalot No, what I mean is to spray a two part epoxy over the properly prepared bare metal. PPG, makes a great line of "DP" two part epoxy primers. After that you spray your sanding primer/primer surfacer over the two part epoxy primer. The epoxy primer will not absorb water, the primer surfacer will, thus you shouldnt spray a sandable primer over bare metal.
just a question... is it necessary to remobe all the old paint and even primer before painting??? i just filed some holes, and painted over the filler and the old paint, is it wrong? will it be ruined up?
@180TheDragon if u painted paint ontop of paint then over time the new paint is going to flake off and the old color going to show through, even if similar shade as the new paint has nothing to really stick to.
@joedaddym Yes but only if it is a solid color. If you try to sand a single stage...Wait, too much for this to write and too many what ifs.. Call me .Dave 702-683-5143
X pattern yes, but keep the length of the block straight in line with the length of the panel. DO NOT TILT the block.. (as seen in the video, this is wrong) By this incorrect method, job will get done reasonably well. But.... the BEST way and CORRECT way is to keep the block straight in line with the quarter panel (sorry for the redundancy) and do the X pattern. This saves time, and does a better job.
i want to know what i should do i have a vette the paint is faded but theres not much bodywork i have to do so on most of the car which is white in color do i have to prime the whole car or can i scotch brite it or wetsand it and paint the whole care like that and what grit should i be using or what scotch brite like i said theres only a few primed spots wher ei did a little bodywork the rest the paint is flat no scratches or nicks for the most part
hey. my friend has a 1969 oldsmobile 442 that has rust damage in spots. we just started removing the visible spots by hand with 150 grit paper. should we sand the whole thing with a block by hand. sanding with 80 then 150 and so on. just to get it ready for primer. and in spots where the rust has ate into good metal pretty bad should we apply bondo on it. is so how do we do that? thanks
@holeinone666 you can hand sand the whole thing but that will be time cunsuming what u can do is get a DA or an orbital sander ti get the job done quickly and the rusted out parts bondo will fix it but not for long because u need to get all the rust out and its hard to sand it it will be better tocut out the rusted parts and weld on some new metal
@holeinone666 i'm no expert....but i think you can cut out the rusted areas (i am talking smaller areas) and apply fiberglass over it to patch the whole. then use pondo putty to smooth out the work. there is a very good video on youtube about it. the work is actually very similar to patching a hole in drywall but only using different matierals.
@2:37 This is a good idea ( For restoration jobs) But if bodyshops did this they would be out of work And to the home users Please Don't use this for Primer in a can or paint in a can for that matter ..spend the extra bucks buy a compresser and paint gun Read up on how to use them and read labels But If you have a classic car or something you want to keep along time send it to someone that been around cars along time like joel jones
Well Thevideo gives you a idea How to but for the basic guy..not a good video ..By the time your at the Primer stage you shouldn't even be looking at 80 grit Your 40 - 180 grits are for rust and metal work and bondo edging blocking etc 180 - 320grit feather edging 320-500grit Dry/wet is for blocking primer feather edge, overspray. on single stage primer ..if you finshed the body work with 320. And you have a good brand of primer, The scratches will be hidden with 2 good good coats and sanding
@freakyflow i always finish at 150 or 180 or 220 with average primer and looks fine, i never drysand primer unless its polyester and i always thought its better to wet sand primer with a durablock with 400! Am i doing good? im an aprentice
@demencialchico If you have all your edging done with 220. Filled all your pinholes with putty etc spraygun gray primer should be fine. Only thing i would watch for is swirl marks made from using a DA left on any bondo used or grinder marks from the body work. If your using 2 stage thick yellow primer a glide coat is needed and you can use 240 to 400 wet But you sound like your on the right track good luck
@freakyflow Hey, it's not called bondo dumbo. Its called body filler. Bondo is who makes the filler. You dont here anyone saying "im gonna go put exxon in the car" do you? No. You would hear someone say "im gonna put gas in the car."
@SilentOneCorajuda13 Awsome Add i'm sure we can all sleep better at night knowing it's "Body filler" not bondo. However seeing there is Many Many "Types" of "Body Filler" ( Fiberglass, Resins, Plastics, Epoxy ) If i said BODY FILLER and you tried to sand fiberglass with 400 grit or primered over it. The job would turn out like crap THUS the Term Most Bodyman USE is BONDO it doesnt mean it has to be from that company. But someone else who does it for a living knows what it is.
@freakyflow Good point. I rest my case. I know bro. Everyone knows it as bondo, hell, i knew it as bondo too until my uncle told me that "Bondo" is who makes it. My appologies.
@SilentOneCorajuda13 All good ..My first car was a 83' Trans Am Famous for rusting at the bottom of the doors near the skirts and bottom rear panels and some window pillers And all i had was a grinder and bondo and duct tape
Now if had the same car ..After market parts. a mig welder and sheet metal Bondo is the worst thing you can use if you plan on keeping it ..if you ever sell a classic car to someone that knows there stuff They'll run a taped magnet across the car to find the bondo
@mo4life123 ypu primer anything that has paint on it. but when sanding it, you dont hav to go all the way to the plastic, just get the shine out of it
Another great video. This guy is the man! He knows how to mix paint, sand, and paint, and muuuchh more! Im learning alot cuz of this dude! THANKS MAN!! Im about to sand my Civic today.
Only if you're inexperienced. A power sander definitely will. A block MIGHT only if you don't know what you're doing. Bottom line is NO you never use a power sander during the finishing stages of paint/prep work. EVER. The only time you would use a D/A is when you're knocking down the original finish for body work. Or you're knocking down body filler. From then on you HAVE to block sand or else you're final paint job will look terrible.
This is not what i expected, i was hoping from the starting stage till the primer stage, not a truck that has already been half sanded or something. im new i wana learn, thumbs up if your with me !

If done right, meaning spraying a primer surfacer over a two part epoxy primer, then, you will have no rust issues!!

Very well explained, intelligently, and thorough. You should definitely become an instructor. Great video!
