  • This movie just shows something I've been saying for years, Dan Abnett is a mediocre writer who writes stories with shallow plots, and flat characters.

  • I would give this movie a 5 and onyl because its the 1st 40k one, a crap on at that. You would think being a 1st they would try in this movie, i mean the cgi scenes in DOW2 are better than this movie. You'de think they would fallow the rules of codex when making this movie and outfitting the SMs correctly. I could rant and rave all day y i dont like this but it would just be repetative. It get a shaky 5/10 just because it the 1st one.

  • I did however, enjoy the movie as a whole and hope that codex pictures can take this and make more 40K movies, hopefully improving every step of the way... I'd love to see some addl. battles , like against ORKS or something, hopefully with a whole company in the movie.... I did like the Apothecary , and some comments like " a loaded boltgun never hurts".... I too liked the effects used on the Chappy..... I also liked the Heavy Bolter marine carving into the shells, and then the slo-mo firing

  • hello , and thanks for all of your videos...

I recently watched Ultramarines, it was loaned to me by a fellow gamer...

In a few points I did feel let down... I am a fairly new gamer, and I did pick up on some parts where they could have kept more true to the "fluff" ... The intro, and leading up to the first action scene could have been edited to be shorter, and then more background info could have been added to beef up the story line and give more background into the space marines and such..

  • lol the subtlety in trying hard to be nice just make this even more hilarious.

  • Ultramarines was the crappiest piece of feces that ever came out of GW vagina.

I simply cannot understand how can anyone grow to swallow the horrible storyline, that was just so embarrassing to even peak at. It worse than your average Power Ranger plot, and I can assure you that I would rather watch Power Ranger than seeing my favorite franchise getting mutilated by horrible graphic and retardation character development and plot...wait THERE ARE NONE!

Just wtf was that CODEX company blowing?

  • how high are your standerds guys?

  • If someone gives this movie a high rating, they probably weren't watching the same movie.

  • I just watched the movie, then finish the spoiler part of this video.

You guys talked about the unlimited ammo and lack of a the realism of that fact. BUT, the Bolter later in the movie fighting the Demon did jam! Haha, what good is a bolter with unlimited ammo if it jams? There is some realism at the wrong moment. :P

Good review guys, pretty much spot on IMO, the 5.5 is being very generous! Must be the fan in you. :)

  • The Ultramarine movie !.........plot not included. Massive disappointment.

  • Blur did the best job of 40k in their cinimatics for DOW1&2 they got everything right, the ultramarines guys couldn't even make them walk or run properly, there was no feeling of weight or strength everything was just loose and slidey. -_- I wish blur would make a full length 40k Movie.

  • Ive only watched it once but i remember that i was disappointed before it finished. Even if the space marines helmets just looked right! it would've pushed the score up for me.I played the table top game for a while but after that got into the universe massively, more so with the video games and just general world and lore, im a 3d artist and that if you thought that movie looked bad, seriously, you were being generous, so many obvious mistakes blurry textures ect.

  • As an FYI. There was a booklet with the boxed set which had them as scouts and explained the sergeant. and lack of command squad. I am sure you knew that, but yes it wasnt in the movie only in the booklet.

  • I agree with your idea of it not coming from the game itself. They even said that they were only making it for the 40K fanbase.

  • P.S it was ridiculously expensive to buy. I only bought it cos I like 40K.

  • Great review guys. I was quite let down by it. I had high expectations and it did not fulfil them. The actions was cool and so was the graphics, but the graphics wre not amazing and a bit childish. They could have got THQ to make the movie since it made DOW 2 and the intro trailer for that game was epic. But obviously THQ would not want to do that kind of thing. It was a dcent movie, with Dan Abnett writing a decent story and decnet voice acting. But it could have been better. 65/100

  • video game trailers have 10x better animation then this whole movie ......huge let down

  • 5.0/10 for me the only thing i was really confuse was the blast from the chaplain weapon

  • Loved the review, completely hilarious and a number of good points. While I disagree with some of the nitpicks, overall I have the same problems with the film.

I'm a pretty big movie snob, so when I sat down to watch this movie I expected it to be.. not very good. In that lens as a bad movie (when you watch a McDouble, not a steak), I give it a 6/10, with a recommendation of only watch if you are curious.

To my normal movie standards, I'd shoot it a 2 or 3.

  • Brilliant.

    High-Fives for you guys!

    Made my day.

    Cheers,

    Sven.

  • It is funny how Damnatus was a worse movie, but still had better intro, ending, characters, plot and scenes. Ultramarines was just...incredibly average.

  • OMG u guys opinions dont reflect mine, im so totally offended (sarcasm) i didnt MIND the movie, but i agree, it could have been better, but w/e is still liked it, id put it at about a ...6.5/10

  • Your co-host is not professional at all and he drags you down as well, is he high? His giggling like a freaking school girl but no were as hot, here is a tip wear a paper bag, You should just of called your review making fun of the space marine movie.

Most people have said it already but you guys didn't want a movie you wanted a battle report.

Any who I didn't like the movie very much but at least I can afford it so I did know there were scouts so blah!

  • And yet the movie was (from what I can see) written by Dan Abnett, the author of a shitpile of those 40K novels!

  • I can't call this a movie. I will call it Time Wasted never to be recovered. The sum total of my 40K knowledge could probably partially fill a tweet. I do know that space marines are supposed to be these ultimate bad asses - I didn't get that from the movie. I was really surprised how nimbly those guys could climb all over everything - I thought the armor would be heavier. My favorite part were the John Woo unlimited ammo guns. Nothing about this movie makes me want to play.

  • I turned my brain off, I don't know any SM fluff AND I was very open minded.... but seriously, point blank.... THIS MOVIE SUCKS!

  • lol come on, it was terrible.. Lets face it, they moon-walked across the landscape (Floated) they had no weight to their movements when they walked! Apart from that, it was dreadful! And yes I brought it ; )

  • I think this was a hilarious review. Your opinions are respectable and presented in an entertaining way. I don't see why so many people are getting offended I agree that if you knew nothing of warhammer, this movie would be pretty decent, but oh well. It was a decent movie, just with some pretty bad fluff. I think you missed one key point though, that the movie is actually a sequel to a graphic novel, in which they are scouts.

  • Yea should made it like the intro to the Dow 2 game

  • Good to see you guys had a good time doing the review. Even if my opinions differ drastically it was still good to see you guys having such a blast doing it. LOL

  • I actually liked the fact that the story developed so slowly, apparently in contrast to you I don't have to be bombarded with events in order to like a film

  • Nonononono, worst part of the movie:

A gunshot rings out. A Marine's helmet cracks open and he falls to the ground, the back of his head blown out as his buddies stand around scratching their heads thinking "what happened?" The Apothecary says "Headshot. Fatal. Hostiles!" It is at THIS moment that the other Marines pull their thumbs out of their butts and start pretending like they know what they're doing.

  • it looks like 9 people are GW fanboys :P. awsome review guys, good too see an onest review of that silly movie. though i would never watch that GW propaganda crap joke of a movie :P. lol good on you guys for doing this vid , hope you get good feed back from everyone :)!

  • The thing to remember is that this was the "First" 40K movie. Even if James Cameron directed this movie and the effects were on par with Avatar we would still have a ton of people complaining that “insert complaint” did not match the 40K that we are all used to. Now if you want to see more 40K movies, hopefully with larger budgets, then you need to support this endeavor.

    Thanks for the review guys.

  • Worst part. The fighting in the battleship. a Ship comprised of between 25,000 to 3 million depending on the class, of troops and other soldiers. And there was only 2 fighting in the ship against the demon. Were the rest, asleep?! I means seriously...did they get lost trying to find there way to him

  • i personally think it was a good movie no were near great but worth the watch the first time you couldn't gather what was going to happen the main problem i had with it all was the armor being unrealistic i mean they could have left it more simple to make it better for the tabletop viewer but they proberly got a bit too into the putting off more things in making them not look so bland lol

  • Actually I'm glad that GW didnt put their name on this... if they had then every year they would release a new version that costed 10 bucks more and went for 10 mins less

  • Great video, laughing through the whole thing! Movie was ****!

  • could of been loger with a better story line!!!!!

  • and yes, i agree, it is your opinion and i respect that.

  • @johnkerry7 And I respect your opinion as well. Thank you for leaving it in the comments.

  • guess what guys, i know a lot about the games and fluff. I didnt think the movie was bad.

you know why? because i know its not the table top game!

  • @johnkerry7 They dont mean it around the table top but they the books, In the books they made the fluff but the movie dident keep to the fluff

  • the movie just SUCKES

the "stat of the art" animation was worse than any bad comp. game intro

the all so great voice acting was a joke

the story line.... what story line they just walk around... Alien & lotr ripp off at best... starshiptroopers 3 was better -.-

and the fluff true part? not one bit... they didn´t even get the look of the sm´s right...

+ you can´t tell who is who

i don´t see how this "movie" could have possibly been worse

this is not even a B or C movie

  • You can't bash an action movie for having outlandish action scenes. When was the last time a movie was realistic with its action?

They skipped over alot of things about the space marines lore. They aren't going to explain the entire codex, so they skipped over some things so that someone with no prior knowledge could understand the full story.

Sorry you two are so closed minded taht you cant see what an good intro in the 40k universe this is, and how far it can promote the game.

  • @cancer18a I'm truly sorry if you took offense to our opinion of the movie. That was definitely not my intention. I don't think the action sequences would have needed to be realistic but it took too long to get to those scenes. I wish it was a good introduction to 40K, but with it going straight to DVD, sold only in GW stores, and costing 2 to 3 times the cost of any other DVD movie, I'm not sure who would be a target audience outside of people already in the game.

  • @cancer18a .. or do u mean, a good way too spam GW's shit all over the place. far as i am concerned GW need too take a leap off a cliff so that miniturewargaming as a hobby can accualy grow and not begin too fade away, as GW spams itself more than any other company, and give the hobby a bad sterotype of being over priced minis. that is what i thnk you meant too say :P

  • @cancer18a Dude... it was a bad movie by movie standards... stop being a fanboy of GW and get real!

  • Holy shit.. If you watch a movie and expect people to be rolling dice, you shouldn't bother next time! What in the World you make of all the GW literature I shudder to think - do you criticise every book based on "codex" and tabletop gaming?

  • @andy7666 I did not want the movie to be based on a "codex" or tabletop gaming. I REALLY did not want it to be about people rolling dice. What I wanted was the movie on a grander scale or it to be shorter. In both cases it improves the overall movie. The budget limitations were very apparent. There was so much promise to this movie. With Dan writing the screenplay, a lot of talented actors for voices. I truly wish that it would have been the movie it could have been.

  • If you put a helmet on your hand, and beat some one with it , its gunna hurt. It's not a game, it's a movie, stop comparing the game play of the models game to the movie.

The movie was sooo much fun to watch, not going to say it is for every one, but if you sit their and watch the movie thinking " welll in the game you could never do that" then you will not enjoy the film.

  • The movie is good for people new to the 40k universe as a lesson, and something that can give them a better understanding of what's going on and how things look in the grimdark future where is only grim darkness. If you're going to nitpick on production values, gear, things like that.. you will find plenty of reasons to bash it.

It's not a blockbuster and it won't make any splash apart from the 40k or 40k interested community, but it's a good introduction into the universe.

  • i REALLY liked the film, but good video none the less and i can totally understand your opinion. But i wish TonyPonyF contributed more - im not sure why he seemed to dislike all of the details that would be "incorrect" in the table top game rules.. like the lack of a command squad and so on

  • ambiguous than any movie out there. I am no movie fan boi...I would give it a 6/10...but I think you're expectations about it being a true reflection of the game are just ridiculous. Name one movie, just one, that is based on any sort of game that truly reflects the game itself. What's that...you can't think of one...cause there isn't one. Movies are an interpretation of something from the view of several persons involved in it's making. Writer, Director, Actor, Producer etc etc.

    Nuff said.

  • Can I make just one comment...this is not the game...this is a story. Try reading Descent of Angels or Fallen Angels and see how many times the marines get hit or damaged in those books and then compare it to a real game. The term is artistic license. This is not meant to be a reflection of the game totally...GW had no input other than selling the movie rights to Codex Pitcures. If you want a totally realistic movie that strictly follows the rules...then you have no chance, as the game is more..

  • @GlarionGames Exactly, thats what I'm thinking.. In fact in future using the novels may be a good way to go - they need a bigger budget, more background "fluff", more epic battles, more scale overall.

  • Movie sucked like a cheap whore on payday. Was just wrong. Dan wanted to make this into something everyone wanted, but the production company didn't have the funds. GW refused to put the money into the project. DOOMED from the start.

  • Nice video; personally, I loved the film. As far as I could stand the CGI, which could've been better. Thanks for posting, Dore. :)

  • *Spoiler*

Don't forget, the reason the captain was able to smoke so many chaos marines in the end was because he was actually a demon prince proxied by a space marine captain mini.
