@jazzjuengling Ovation guitars have a so called "curve-back" which, is pretty much a plastic bowl, instead of a cornered wooden body. This gives it that smooth sound.
@jazzjuengling That's because he's playing an Ovation - the most overrated of all acoustic guitars. My first guitar was an Ovation, and they were the latest thing in the 80's, because the action on them was so easy. But, it does sound plastic, and for a very good reason, the entire back side of the thing, the bowl, is made ... of plastic! That's what gives it such a sterile, cold timbre.
Notice Paco plays with his fingers ... That´s 'little bit' more difficult than playing with a plectrum (Al & John do). No comparation possible. Paco is God
The original version was by Paco de Lucia, and was called "Rio Ancho". The track first featured on Paco de Lucia's 1976 album Almoraima. In 1980, Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola collaborated and produced an ensemble track composed of Di Meola's "Mediterranean Sundance" taken from his 1977 album Elegant Gypsy with "Río Ancho". It was performed live in San Francisco on December 5, 1980 and the set was released by Columbia Records as simply Friday Night in San Francisco. Wikipedia "Rio Ancho".
why the hell do they only clap for that guy in the black for his solo ohh just cus its really fast any guitar player knows pacos technique is far harder to replicate
@guitarreilly they clap for john because while paco and al play an amazing classical guitar, at this time, it was thought almost impossible to, as you say, "replicate" a classical sound on a steel string guitar, which john plays.
@willmart728 man... paco plays without pick and he was talking about al di meola, that is the one with the black guitar, not john. john is using a nylon guitar on the right side =)
@guitarreilly Maybe they like hearing the solo since it is his song? I can't speak for the crowd. If I was there, I wouldn't be cheering/clapping at any of the solos, I would've been in shock and awe with my jaw wide open.
philgrey2007's post of two days ago is the smartest post I've ever seen on YouTube. Pay attention, everyone: music is not a competition, even if some musicians occasionally pretend it is to entice an audience to listen more closely. Cutting contests may draw a crowd....but nobody has ever really lost one. As Suzuki Roshi said, people with opinions just go around bothering one another.
i played this song at my school oral exam....it was amazing...to learn this song you must have a lot of technique...it's quite difficult but the solos are beautiful to do
I was amazed the first time I heard the Friday Night in SF and still am every time I hear these recordings. I am a McLaughlin fan for life but feel Dimiola definitely lays it out on this cut.
@algrand90 "when it comes to alternate picking nobody can touch mclaughlin"
No shit. Metal fans who rant and rave about Paul Gilbert have no idea what REAL alternate-picking is because they're unaware of who John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola are. Of course, it's because of John and Al that we now have the Malmsteen's and Gilbert's of the guitar world.
Me da vergüenza que haya gente fan de jovenes que no saben ni cantar ni nada ni son musicos, y no sepan apreciar los tres pedazos de guitarristas que hay en ese escenario... OLe vosotros
We all have our preferences. But here we're choosing the best from the best. I prefer Paco's performance but the other two guys are fantastic too. The problem is that so many people prefer Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

By the way, I told the youtube user that it's not classic guitar, it is flamenco guitar, and that is beyond the genre or the simplicity of the piece ;) You can play blues on jazz, you can play flamenco on blues..anyway...
@vomae And mixing is what music has always been about. If it were not so, flamenco would not have existed, not even the pure, which is nothing but another mix. Another mix.
Flamenco was not the product of a mind. Cannot be kept in rules, cannot be kept in "palos".
