I don't like this version. I love MIdge but Fade To Grey was done right the first time. It was beautiful. It was perfect. This doesn't even come close.
Fade to Grey started life as a tune originally called "Toot City", which was a project that Billy Currie and Chris Payne were fiddling about with whilst playing in Gary Numan's backing band.
@MidnightinSavannah one wonders why it ever made the charts in the first place... those lyrics sound like they were written in ten minutes on a heroin bender. they make absolutely no sense, tell no story, there is absolutely nothing to be gained from hearing the song... it makes no sense.
someone should come up with other lyrics for it, maybe it'd be good then.
@hcvang i guess you are very young? or you're not old enough to remember the song in the charts? Visage was a experimental band thrown together with Steve Strange on vocals. They had a couple of hits but this was the first and only hit as far as I am concerned. The band was an amalgamation of Ultravox and Magazine; two awesome bands on completely different musical paths and yes Midge played on the record
@TalkToTheBody I didnt put Ure's playing on the record into question. I know he composed the music for Visage. I know he wrote the lyrics - even if Strange claims to have been the creative who did that, whenever he's given a little bit of attention.
Experimental - sure... does that mean you have to write lyrics that mean absolutely nothing?
I now the original and I waited one summer month to see this version live and I loved it, whatever you want to say about missing sinths and so, he is gooooood :). The only thing I miss a bit are Perry and Lorraine, but I am not sure if I really like to see them nowadays. Better to remember them young and beauty :)
Every collaboration which assisted an artist, by the artist is be Artistic design, whether be image, by inspiration, or to press a time of new material. Many artists have had periods such as this, and at one point or another sought image consultants and embellishments.
Flamboyants will always be, and are necessary to lift the spirits & to revive one's orginal focus, be that from the fashion industry or by way of the local Beauty or hair design shop.
As much as I love the original, this just proves Midge Ure has more talent and personality in one of his turds, than Steve Strange had during his entire career.
just saw midge at 80 s festival on sunday he played a great set with this in it, quality all the way through got everyone going , after the ultravox gigs earlier i have come to the conclusion he isGOD
Now that's how you take a song with a deep, layered texure with a dark new wave sound and turn it into a lame duck FM rock track. Nickelback are probably taking notes.
Big thumbs up to Midge for a cracking updated version. It's the sign of a good song when it's not pinned down to its original production or the fashions it was tied to in the first place.
This could have been a recent song in this form and some great guitar playing - and much better singing than the Steve Strange vocal - make this a great version & even an improvement in many ways. Has more of a sensual groove than the original, for example. Great tone from the Les Paul & the Valvetronix.
It's great, but he doesn't have any of the sensitivities that made Fade to Grey a classic... the version of a straight rock man almost along the lines of Pink Floyd, not a gay synth popper -
How can you nail the song down with such an oppressive guitar line is what I'm wondering too.
I know he helped write this, but it's so very wrong hearing him sing it. It doesn't work for me in this horrible bluesy rock style. It's like he hates the song! Good grief, start the thumbs down already why don't ya, lol!
Yo tambien opino que pierde fuerza , pero es una excusa para ver al padre de la criatura años despues . Midge Ure nunca nos deja indiferentes , espero que lo podamos escuchar muchos años mas .
Amazing!!! I saw Midge live in the summer,he is still fab, this was one of the best songs, he can rock it big time, can't wait to see you 2009 Midge!!! I understand 1 hour slot is in order...I should bloody think so too, a legend like you, see you there people...RETROFEST MOTHERWELL, STRATHCLYDE COUNTRY PARK!!!
yeah, you can find those kinds of shirts at Hot Topic, which must have a website, if there isnt one in your local mall. it's that hot rod/rockabilly style, the black shirt with a shiny or loud pattern down one side
Where does this version come from? Great! I agree with patermtube, it is a rather simple song in terms of chord sequence but, wow, it is so evocative ...
Midge can sing about yesterday's garbage and it would still sound awesome! Considering this song isn't a "Midge" song, he does it very well, indeed. It's an opportunity to experience his guitar skills.....
@2dogzmom well, drugs fuck everything to hell... i speak from experience. dont start, it's not worth it... i'd rather have gotten drunk every weekend as a youngster than fucked up.
I don't like this version. I love MIdge but Fade To Grey was done right the first time. It was beautiful. It was perfect. This doesn't even come close.

Midge has a great voice but this song is SOOO much better with synths. This version would have never made the charts.

@hcvang even longer ago than visage - lyrics were invented to keep people interested in the music.
Personally I prefer "songs" without them.
cullyvan 11 months ago
@cullyvan "Songs" without lyrics are not songs at all, friend.
Rather, you are talking about a composition, a melody, a tune. Songs are written and sung - Melodies are composed.

@hcvang yes, i know. But thanks for that.
