Barbara. I love Carla, but.... Barbara nails it and is playing the guitar part too. Haven't seen Barbara in a year or so. She usually played a half dozen or so shows in New Orleans each year until very recently. Let's hope her back is feeling better soon.
I will never forget the night I sang this song, standing a little too close to my guitar player in the club feature, and his girl friend was watching me from the audience.Almost didn't make it out of the club! Just groovin' though, you know the feeling, lights just right, buzz on,etc. Loving it....thank you for sharing the gold.
Carla , mmmmm what can i say,she got me draw four years in the air force far from home, with gee whiz ,b.a.b.y , let me be good to you , comfort me and more and more songs to keep me in touch with home. i hear carla about ten years back and she till sounds great , thank you Carla. jas
This song is soo good, you can't really mess it up. All covers are nice, because it is inherently a kick-ass song. Unless Glee does a cover for this song, you can't really fuck it up...I hate glee
Whose is better, Carla or Barbara? i've troubled over this many times, and to tell you the truth i can's separate them, both hit the genius spot, i always play them one after another, i don't want to appear unfaithful to either, queens of soul!
@nyimtman This is what i love about Youtube. All the posts of various versions that i now get to enjoy that i missed first time around. thanks to all for the headsup. :-)
This is comparin apples to oranges, doesn't make a damn bit of difference, they're both great, now getting technical about it,Ms.Lynn's is it,but Carla makes a good case!!!

Check out the newest version of the song with Jesse Flores (Lead Singer Vudu Cafe), Barbra Lynn (came back to record this new version) & The Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra. Jesse Flores & Barbara Lynn sing a duet on this timeless classic!
I believe it's better than Barbara Lynn's. She seems to have more soul and more feeling. She believes what she says. Her voice is magnificent. She's darn good.
Gloria lynn is the one who kicked ass on this song. nice that we came from an era that saying f** words and such was just not our thing. Gee Whiz is Carla's.
I like Carla's version better because it's slower and has more soul to it. But I remember hearing Barbara's version first on Hairspray and that when I fell in love with this song lol
If Irma Thomas ever did this, I can't find a trace of it. I am glad to see you have mentioned her though. While we're on the subject...Irma Thomas rules!
I see where you are coming from Karmu2, though I am a huge fan of both, I'm sure you agree that Booker T and the MGs just set the musicianship of this record that little bit higher, the Memphis Horns on it alone are just pure class, chiefly because imho they are the one of the best horn sections in the history of music!
I do agree - the best musician on BArbara's version was Barbara herself on guitar. And Carla Thomas adds a Baby Washington cuteness and appeal which, in Barbara's more menacing version, is missing. I would have to call it a happy (for us listeners) tie - and I'm so happy that both women are alive and still performing!
I think Barbara Lynn is better: she wrote this song and recorded it at age 18. Carla Thomas sings it well, but it's basically just a note-for-note copy of Barbara Lynn's version, with no new licks. Still, a good listen.
taking a break from my work.
