i just bought a uke and am trying to learn some stuff (peticulaly paint it black - rolling stones) but what i dont get is how a song has chords yet people seem to pick the strings a certain way when they play instead of just strumming. like this guy is making chords with his fingers but picking at the strings, i dont think he strums once. can someone explain to me how this works. how are you meant to know how to pick the strings like that?

Just practice everyday.

Listen to different types of music to get exposed to different techniques.

Learn all the basic chords, chord progressions and chord scales.

Then, you can create your own style, using different picking and strumming techniques.

Check out some of the instructional videos that is offered here on You Tube.

Take your time, be consistent with practice and it'll come!!
