people who don't want to live free, from their own land and be part of a greater change are idiots, if this country is so great then why can't we yave a home that looks different from the traditional or contemporary......hey hwydrone, how about you get educated, freaking nimrod......this is why i hate society because of idiots like this
@whiskerkill oh it's "good price-wise",eh? Considering you're buying less than a quarter the square footage on a house of equal value or the fact that you'll still be taking out a 30+yr loan on a house that isn't even equipped with traditional sewage, running water or grid backup power? What if you DON'T live 10Kft above sea level? What if u live in a bog and your house has to be on stilts? What if you live in a posh neighborhood that can't even SPELL Earthship?
@whiskerkill ...what if you already have land surrounded by people that would ceaselessly petition city council to have your $60K Earthship project condemned on the grounds of it being an "eyesore" simply because it wasn't in the shape of a traditional home?
@whiskerkill You're right though. U wont have any utility bills...because u won't be able to finish construction because u can't get a renewal on your building permit because you can't explain to city hall what, exactly, will be done with your sewage waste-water without a septic tank or city service...never mind trying to explain the difference between gray and black water or solar/composting toilet safety. All while still renting and living in a dilapidated trailer house.
@danbuck333 my "problem" is that i've been trying to build one of these for a decade. Since 2003 it's been my life's dream to build an Earthship. I've literally shoveled every extra penny I've earned into this goal. Need i say I've been doing it ALONE? And to see mike himself just spring up a whole house in less than 3 weeks just because they have the bank loans approval and infinite (free) manpower is everything but inspiring...it's absolutely infuriating.
@danbuck333...especially since i have yet to succeed on my own project and they manage it with little to no effort and even calling it "fun". What makes u think they're not elitists anyway? Elitism is used to describe a situation in which power is concentrated in the hands of a limited number of people through intellect, wealth, specialized training or experience and they'll be glad to help u get started...for a nominal fee. Wikipedia describes these assholes to a tee, i'd say.
@hwydrone what are you on about? If your gonna rant atleast make sense ...Im still baffled how you came to the conclusion that a group of people buiilding houses out of rubbish are elitist?
For all of you living between DC and Boston: Michael Reynolds will be doing a 3 day conference in Philly 4/17 to 4/19 on how to build these! Philly will be building the first official urban Earthship! check out the earthship website and search for philly
I think this is a wonderful and effecient idea, however, our governments love to keep us dependent. For them, there is too much money at stake. I think it's interesting that in Arizona you were not allowed to build an eco-home, which does not depend on city generated electricity. You HAD to have electrical hook-up even if your home was completely solar powered. Otherwise they would not issue a building permit. Things like that have got to change.
These are made for undesirable lots like desert lots. Most people can afford to buy those because they aren't in high demand. Lots that a developer wouldn't waste his time bringing utilities to because they are too far out or too hot or not enough water underground to be worth it. Lots like that are what the Earthships are for so anyone who wants to break the mold and go off the grid can for low money. I don't think the gov't will interfere; lots of folks working to do this right now.
This is a great concept. Unfortunately, in many places it likely wouldn't pass building inspection. I say this only because, while I would totally love to live in a self-sustaining home like this, it isn't likely that the government will allow anyone to. If people were to build these homes, it would mean the government would lose money and we all know they wouldn't allow that. :( I wonder how much it costs to build and maintain...
I'm going to be critical here: I'm not a Socialist; I don't believe that oil or the Earth is going to end on our watch. I think the Global Warming stuff is just a manufactured emergency to convince people that they need more gov't control in their lives. But I do like the self reliance & sustainability ideas. It does need more work though; not everybody can build a used tire & beer can home in the desert. Maybe, we should push for more Nuclear power, like France & the rest of the world is doing.
@baddogonline nuclear power is one of the most expensive energies out there, if you take away all the government subsidies it becomes very expensive....it maybe clean but its not economical
And the world isnt pushing for nuclear energy....you have been misinformed....and what do you do with the nuclear waste.....that still to this day hasnt been figured out
@danbuck333 I want to be with you; I really do. That's why I'm a member of sites like this. But, am I the only one who feels that most of the solutions being proposed, just won't work? I know we have solid, sound, tested energy that we can rely on for at least the next 100 years (oil, nat gas, coal, nuclear). We need a replacement for those, soon. And, maybe an unexpected breakthrough WILL occure. But, in the meantime, we should understand that wind, solar, & mass-transit isn't the answer.
@baddogonline We waste more power then we use. We have the know how to produce power without using any fossil fuels. People just need to put 2 & 2 togather. solar + water = hydrogen. Hydrogen = solar we can use any time any where in a FUEL cell. Output of which is power and water. Free solar + free water = free power + water. Water to hydrogen gas. hydrogen gas back to water. Makes power + water when used in a hydrogen fuel cell.
@baddogonline why is it not the answer? you do know whatever attitude we take in our lives about anything makes it manifest. The impossible is possible.
I think you're right. And decommissioning old nuclear plants is an expensive nightmare. Check out the Brennilis plant near me in France. It's practically impossible to dismantle. Then there's the dependency on foreign countries for the Uranium. And let's not go into the Fukoshima fiasco!
@baddogonline the people in Haiti did? if they did it with nothing why would it be impossible. man the excuses people make. BTW Haiti is the most poorest country in the world. anyone can build it with some training.
Many people in France can see past the government nuclear policy and know that it's extremely expensive and means you are dependent on Uranium producing countries. The extraction process pollutes those countries and then what do we do with the waste? Bury it next door to your house? The French EPRs have more than doubled in price and the decommissioning of old Nuclear plants is an expensive and technical nightmare.
@fakefrenchboy I'm not wanting to troll here; but, I am open to proven sources of power; nuclear is expensive because of political decisions. The opponents to nuclear have lobbied to ratchet up the regulations causing it to be expensive, true. However, it IS a clean source of power; the waste can be safely moved & stored. Yucca isn't being used right now because of political decisions. Environmentalists aren't taken seriously because we mostly criticize & don't offer real-workable solutions. :(
@lordmetroid It will take leaders from the environmental community to acknowledge that this type of energy is acceptable. So many of us just fall in line with the latest party-propaganda on what we should think. My friend has wind and solar on his sailboat. He has a radio & lights for a few hours at night, but it doesn't run the normal items we need to be comfortable. His engine mostly recharges the batteries. His stove & heater is propane. It's more like camping out, than living in a house.
It's sad to realize that we have these crappy cracker box houses so engrained in our head that most can only dream of owning an Earthship. Hopefully some day it won't feel like you have to commit to some alternative lifestyle to be able to own one, and they will be welcome next door to the current "standard" style house.
Also, I appreciate the language edits, I'll be sure to share this with friends and family!
@dslynx It kind of makes me sick to think about how much money that they get of mine in taxes alone. They tax you when you make it(get paid) then tax you when you buy anything.
