The government betrays itself when it gives the people that kind of power. By saying that because many people in Jamaica don't agree with homosexuality, the government will not put measures in place to protect their rights, it is an atrocity, I believe. Once the individual is born on Jamaican soil and is a native Jamaican, that person is a Jamaican first and foremost. Any other categorization: gay or straight is secondary to that fact, and the individual should be protected as such.
As a Jamaican, I can understand why a great portion of the society does not agree with homosexuality, simply because Jamaica is a largely Christian nation. However, I cannot say that I necessarily think that the policy of the government is appropriate. The government should not have ANY policy that allows any native Jamaican, whether heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or whatever to be treated as a second class citizen in their OWN country.

On the matter at hand though. It is interesting to see how the comments about "equal rights" and "stop the hate", and what-not are liberally dispersed with doses of "such a backward country" and "these small island folk are idiots!" etc. Jamaica's people have come through so much (crime and violence etc.), and the one thing that has kept them through the years, is their stance on moral issues like this one. It is one of the few (if not only) countries that has a prayer to God as their anthem!

I agree with you completely. The familial unit in Jamaica, and indeed the larger part of the anglophone west indies is in tatters. I simply don't see how giving a gay couple the same legal rights as a normal couple will make the situation any better. In fact, research seems to suggest otherwise. The government betrays itself when it gives the people that kind of power. By saying that because many people in Jamaica don't agree with homosexuality, the government will not put measures in place to protect their rights, it is an atrocity, I believe. Once the individual is born on Jamaican soil and is a native Jamaican, that person is a Jamaican first and foremost. Any other categorization: gay or straight is secondary to that fact, and the individual should be protected as such.

As a Jamaican, I can understand why a great portion of the society does not agree with homosexuality, simply because Jamaica is a largely Christian nation. However, I cannot say that I necessarily think that the policy of the government is appropriate. The government should not have ANY policy that allows any native Jamaican, whether heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or whatever to be treated as a second class citizen in their OWN country.

i agree with 2smart, to some extent, ppl see good things when they come to jamaica, and jamaica has been recognized for good things as well both locally and internationally, but you must also realize that other ppl suffer the same way too, natives, arabs spanish ppl they are canadians or americans when its something good but when its something bad its diff... black people overall are undermined in society, so yes it is as a product of their society but only to some extent

I think he answered pretty well, but I don't know if the world can understand where we as Jamaicans are coming from. Yes, we have a high crime rate, and really, although the homophobia is rampant, it's really something that will take a hell of a long time to be accepted. In the words of one of our local opinion columnists, "It's not the homosexuality we have a problem with, it's the PUBLIC DISPLAYS of homosexuality." And if people see those things, they will react. Violently, yes, but react.

Secondly, you say homosexuality is just like a child abuser and adulterer. This is an admission that this lifestyle is immoral, filthy and is condemned by many people. I c your point and to a point agree with it. Let me say I have friends who are gay and a family member and I dont think them anyless for this. They jus as sweet and do regular stuff like str8 people so I cant see y I should hate and call for their deaths. Yet as a christian my value system would lead me to believe in what the bible says will happen at the end. I love all mankind and try really hard not to be judgemental as I am riddled with flaws.
