I Found this! " The Goons elevated Milligan to stardom, the demands of performing took a toll. During Series 3 he suffered several mental breakdowns. In late 1952, Milligan became convinced he had to kill Peter Sellers, while attempting to gain entry to Sellers' flat, armed with a potato knife, he accidentally walked through the plate-glass front door. He was heavily sedated for 2 weeks, and spent almost two months recuperating. Milligan later blamed The Goon Show for his breakdown"
I always thought it was charming that they kept Spike corpsing, shows it was obviously first-take stuff, and the audience is actually really reacting to him rather than being forced to laugh after 39 takes.
I have a cassette recording from the ABC (Australia) in 1982 when Spike was in the newsroom studio and kept interrupting the news reader with: 'What about Spike Milligan?' When the reader read out: 'The Prime Minister was met at the airport by (...) and members of the cabinet including the treasurer ' he couldn't resist adding: 'and Spike Milligan.' When starting on the next item, the reader broke down laughing. I suppose it's covered by copyright so I can't play it. Pity because it's funny.
I'm glad to see all Spike Milligan-videos I used to watch still exist....(after seeing so many others disappearing). Hmmmm. Perhaps the BBC doesn't have copyrights.....hmm perhaps it doesn't care (they didn't release Q on DVD, so maybe they just don't want to be held responsible for Mr Milligan). Let's hope they won't change their minds and we'll keep getting the kind PERMISSION to watch stuff we can't buy or watch on TV.
if you google 'q6 milligan', you will find the Qseries tribute site with lots of scripts and pics and vids from Spike Milligan's finest TV hour. And a DVD petition to sign!
I love it when Spike corpses or tries not to, makes him even funnier
