  • This chap is still alive. I stand to be corrected.

  • Without knowing a single word of German, one can determine what this song is about simply from the way F-D interprets the song.

I actually do know German, and it made my hair stand on end in terror — just from the interpretation. You can tell something very, VERY bad is happening to the boy, and the father is powerless to do *anything* about it.

  • fuck this bitch.

  • AWESOME!! He was a true story-teller: he went FAR beyond simply being a great singer..... and we are so blessed that he left a rich legacy of well-recorded music behind :--).

  • Schubert was actually the first composer who used the piano, not merely as accompaniment, but to give colour and atmosphere to the song, thereby hightening the impact of the song. It is therefore imperative that the pianist be given the same weight as the singer. He/she is no longer simply an "accompanist". Gerald Moore was probably the greatest pianist in this role. Please read his book:"Am I too loud".

  • the pianist is a great too

  • The full version is still on here; just look up erlkonig dieskau, it's 4 minutes 14 seconds and should be the first one.

  • I agree with all the "bravo-comments". Heard this since childhood in many versions and different performers. The text apparently appears in Goethes "Der Erlkoenig" A truly grusome tale.Fischer Diskau is simply magnificent. But listen also to the impeccable piano acc. Diskau. Who is he/she??

  • I wish I knew the accomapnist too!!! I dislike it when the accompanists are completely ignored - they're actually associate artists and should be respected too.

This singer is great. So clear.

  • @Wittenberg12

    Gerald Moore is the pianist

  • Seine Mimik is genial

  • Brilliant poetry combined with spectacular singing, I couldn't ask for anything better!

Really, this poem actually scared me more than anything, but I love it so much. Truly perfection at its best!!!! XD

  • he's very good.

  • Very simply, who among us is brave enough to give ourselves over so completely to the music? well, yes, but how to survive with the resulting separation?

  • Yes. A very interesting question. There is a world to come and those who commit themselves to a god of this world will go down to ... .

  • why does it start a 1/3 of the way thru?

  • + - 0 !!!!!!!

  • omg perfect

  • The best Erlkönig for me!

  • I have to say is a great performance!!! Everything is exactly how is suppost to be!

  • where's the first half?

  • Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is a prodigy and an absolute genius. He seeps into his characters so precisely. The emotion is so vivid and unexagerated.

  • I agree. He is the ultimate storyteller. He doesn't compromise the lyrics for the music, it's a perfect blend and the result is sublime.

  • What a performance. Few will ever match FD's technical ability, he conveys such expression to his voice.

  • This man possessed the best piannisimo skills out of all the voices I've heard - from Bjorling to Caruso to anyone...

Imo: he was the best Barotone to walk the earth, and if I had to compare him to anyone; I would say he sounds like Bjorling in terms of pure Technical skill.

His tone was amazing as well.... he had some of the best control out of all the voices I've heard, AND his facial expressions when he sings are awesome - he clearly felt/understood what he was singing about.

  • OH MY GOODNESS, when I started watching thisI noticed there was something creepy about the way he was singing the Erlking part. He doesn't blink for the first 42 seconds of this video. The erlking is friends with Dr. Lecter.

  • @cwcaplinger Yeah, I think it's stage habit. Intense and stirring.

  • Anyone know who the accompanist is for this recital??? In the early EMI recording, Gerald Moore understates the final two chords, sorrowfully, almost sotto voce. Here we've got crashing ff chords, but the score's marked Andante. I don't think it's Moore...

  • Dieskau has performed it differently as well. It's Moore, alright. If you watch the complete video you'll see him at the end.

  • the chords are still marked forte in the score

  • why is youtube so annoying!

Is this even still under copyright...

I miss the first two verses!

  • It was a good job that DFD was captured by the Allies and not by the Russians. He joined the Wehrmacht in 1945. Er is still with us.

  • Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind? Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind; Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm, Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm. "Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?"

  • Now I have the complete version of this piece.

Come to my channel and download from there.

  • THANKS!!!!

  • Yeah I HATE these damn "coptyrights".

Let us enjoy the damn video!
