I do believe that our spirit lives on for eternity. John Lennon died on my 16th birthday ,dec 8 1980 , I was in shock all that day. his music never will die ..
I do agree Gary! When any of them leave us, the earth does feel a bit less for their loss. I think I felt that way most when Jimmy Stewart passed on. Thanks for a lovely and thought provoking post!
I think we feel the loss of a movie star, or musician because we've spend so much time in their company, as you said. it's almost as if they were a personal friend.
Every death is a sad occasion. But, ultimately i do think we're selfish in our grief. In some ways we're feeling sorry for ourselves.
If everyone you mentioned had done bunches of 10 minutes vlogs while walking through the woods holding up their own camera they would have lived longer:)
R.I.P. Tony Curtis. I was a big fan of "Some Like It Hot".
And yep, when Mary Tyler Moore shuffles off to that big hat rack in the sky I'll certainly be expecting an OhCurt vlog.
@Blinkazoid Unless they trip over a fallen log and land face first, mouth open on a poisonous mushroom whilst simultaneously swallowing. It could happen.
When one of our contemporaries dies, even if we were not completely engrossed in their work, it was a part of our living consciousness and it's sad when we know there will be no more of their art being shared with us, a hole in the fabric.
@LeSaMilano An now Michael Douglas is not faring so well. Again, not a top ten of mine, but so many memorable parts in good films. The march of time takes to prisoners. Unless you have a Delorean and a spare 1.21Gw!
Gary, great to hear your thoughts – a new video!! You’re right that the world seems…a bit dimmer without the spirited Curtis around. Like you, I wasn’t a following fan, but whenever I came across the actor, he was enjoyed. ‘Some Like It Hot’ was a blast. His daughter, Jamie Lee is sure cute. …I too, wondered if your arm was going to get fatigued on you – but you’re a tough, brutal stud! I like the woods & nature behind you a lot! Great job, -Jim
@CombatOasis Thanks Jim. That's a fantastic, self-contained little paradise I only recently discovered - even though I live only a few miles from it! I take Max there all the time now!
When someone passes who has given us laughter, smiles through tears, made us stop and think, given us chills & thrills, taken us away from an otherwise "ordinary" life, and even performed miracles, we naturally mourn and miss them. Great to see you again Gary. hugs, Chris
@askmisscris It's the whole 'idolization' principle. We literally make these people into gods and of course, gods are eternal! As always, it's us poor mortals that get the royal shaft! ;)
It is sad when people who have influenced us and entertained us die. it's especially significant because as you mention, it's sort of a reminder of our own pending mortality. There are also those pangs of nostalgia that come along when a long-lived entertainer dies.
I was a paper delivery girl back in the early 80's and one morning I pulled open my stock to deliver - WHAM - Grace Kelly gone. (No, I didn't kill her with my paper supply - rather the news of her passing was on the front page)...it was like you said, a space that couldn't be replaced, even for a young schoolgirl in a small town in Maine...

@needafraser Apparently, this existence is part of the greater learning curve we all go through. Some believe this may be the 'Hell' installment!

@IntrepidClaire I remember his passing too - and there was that gaping hole effect then as well.

I wonder why we have a need to be sad about the inevitable...

@bugsinrug I suppose I should have also mentioned directors to. I mean, can you imagine a world without Spielberg??? Yet he's only human. I think. ;)
