  • Save the armchair psychiatry. SW is simply the most talented songwriter / musician on the planet.

  • so proud i discovered this bloke by myself. and so proud i've been spreading the word since then.

  • Hmm how about low latent inhibition?

  • hes an amazing musician song writer and producer. like a god to me. wow

  • Guys I think I've cracked the meaning of this song. I think it's about him not wanting to be old and sentimental.

  • @Soloxable true story

  • <3

  • Brilliance...I will remain forever grateful to my old roommate who, knowing how much I loved good music, suggested in 2007 that I check out this band by the name of Porcupine Tree...Opened up an entire new world.

  • Just amazing performance!

  • I haven't really read the entire debate over Steven's potential mental illness, but it seems more likely to me that he has some schizophrenia spectrum disorder than an autism spectrum disorder (Syd Barret, a definite influence on Steven, is widely believed to have had both, so that's always a possibility). Schizotypal disorder isn't what would come to mind for most people since it's not thrown around as much as autism, but it's really more about coldness/social anxiety than about hallucinations.

  • @tnt2311 Asperger Its not (really) a mental illness. And well yeah but I had schizotypal traits when I was a kid too. So that doesnt rule out aspie. Anyway im just saying that he could be on the spectrum but far from a full blown aspie. And schizophrenia sound like something you would notice.

  • @ Stevegrierson: He's a human being. What did you want, honestly? I've met him quite a few times, and he's a very nice man, very patient with fans. Just be happy he even bothers. You met a brillliant artist. Be thankful.

  • @msclvr48 He might have been scared of me, I'm a skinhead Mancunian. And the pub was a bit of shitehole.

  • Hmm anyway else think Steven shows signs of having asperger or something similar. His geekness and obsessive perfectionism. Not really a people person personality and the whole performing barefoot thing And his prodigious talents. A wee bit aspie.

  • @PennyDreadful1 anyone*

  • @PennyDreadful1

In a society where anyone individualistic, obsessive, or just plain different is stigmatized as an "aspie," it's no wonder mediocrity and conformity are so rampant.

  • @psyoptica There is no shame in being an aspie. Its not a mental illness. He do seem to have some mild aspie traits though. Even the barefoot thing. I used to walk barefoot around the house as a kid because I thought the seams sort of cut into my feet. Later learned that it was a symptom. So apart from his geekness and other peculiarities that really caught my eye. I dont believe in throwing the "aspie" word around as some people do.

  • @psyoptica This varies from aspie to aspie. But a youthful look is also a possible trait due to atypical maturation. A sensitivity to sound and other stimuli. Somewhat unsensisitive in social situations(but not mean). Honest about own opinions. Possibly precocious.Own way of solving problems(doesnt adjust to other peoples methods because they are faster or more efficient). From afar Steven looks like he might have a case.

  • @PennyDreadful1 From afar and from up close he looks perfectly fucking normal. The term aspergers just becomes less and less meaningful as time goes on, it has become so vague that it encompasses personality types now, which is just wrong.

  • @Nauticus89 Well hey I look pretty normal too :/. Asperger could be (and very often is) very subtle. Look im not saying he is a flaming autistic as that would be noticeable. But he could be (perhaps) a well adjusted adult aspie. People have been speculated to have had Aspergers for less(which is something I wouldnt do).

  • @Nauticus89 What do you think autists all go around fiddling with their hands and looking at corners of the room there in? Because some do. But seriously most aspies ive met come off as pretty normal. Maybe abit more stone faced and unemotional. And shy. And more content with being on their own.

  • @PennyDreadful1 Yes, but the diagnosis of aspergers isn't made on being a shy, unemotional loner. Like I said, aspergers isn't a personality type. And that's exactly what you're doing, is saying that we can accurately judge that someone is an aspie based on that. I am very introverted, somewhat unemotional and prefer time alone but have no symptoms of Aspergers. Furthermore, we don't know Steven personally, it would make more sense if a friend of his suggested Aspergers. Not us, based on a video

  • @Nauticus89 Steven is probably neurotypical and I wasnt attempting to diagnose him. I was merely suggesting something interesting. On a more humorous note do you know how aspie it is to be obsessed with trains? Well its pretty aspie. Quite a few succesful people have been speculated to be on the spectrum. Like Mark Twain,Enstein(pretty sure about that one actually),Thomas Jefferson,Hitler(so okay not a posterboy that one). Take it with a pinch of salt but the possibility is there.

  • @Nauticus89 And aspies could be pretty hyper and annoying actually. I know a few. And I wasnt judging solely on personality. But the barefoot thing is a sign actually(albeit the only convincing sign).Aspies tend to be very sensitive to stimuli. And although alienation and depression is a common theme in lyrics. Steven seems obsessed with it. Cure for optimism even seem to reference people trying to normalize you. If he is he is probably on the very fringes of the spectrum.

  • @Nauticus89 It was actually his lyrics and the way he expresses himself in interviews that got my attention. And im just speculating. Why get so uspet?

  • @PennyDreadful1 I'm not upset, just weary of people using it so liberally as a diagnosis, based on the vaguest collection of traits. I once believed I was on aspie because of how it came to be defined on the internet - quiet, prefers solitary activities, not a big socializer. But then I recognized that I had no obsessions, and I am very good at picking up social cues/vibes. I realized my difficulties socializing were completely due to my anxiety disorder.

  • @Nauticus89 Ahh Ok. BUT Steven Wilson seems pretty obssessive to me. And I completely recognize myself in the bare foot thing(Ok im really milking that I know but seriously) Also in the way he describes being very immersed and absorbed by music as a child. I guess NT's do that too perhaps but yeah. And yeah I dont like how liberally the aspie label gets thrown around its not some kind of genius disease or whatnot. But im really getting vibes from Steven.

  • @PennyDreadful1 And an introvert who has an anxiety disorder can look a lot like an aspie, but it's different. Get me drunk and I become talkative, unihibited, and.. normal. It's a chemical difference for me. With aspies it's a difference in wiring. Id be much more willing to say Steven Wilson is introverted, based on interviews and his lyrics, than I'd be willing to say he's even slightly autistic. He just seems like a completely normal dude to me.. besides being insanely talented, of course.

  • @Nauticus89 Well yes but come on now he is pretty obsessive and odd. Again the bare feet thing really is a sign. why are you so reluctant to admit that the possibility is there? And man I get talkative and high spirited when im drunk too. In fact when I was a kid I could bore people with talking about my obsessions. You can sort of grow out of many aspie traits. Wearing shoes is not a problem for me either.

  • @PennyDreadful1 The possibility is there, but I can't make a leap of faith to say it's a good one. I don't see what you so obsessive or odd about him (but I'll admit he's a huge nerd). In the end, it doesn't really matter either way. A label just gives what's different a convenient name. I don't care whether a guy who beats me up and takes my wallet is a clinical psychopath, because either way he's a prick. And I don't care if Steven is an aspie, it won't change how I listen to his music.

  • @Nauticus89 Oh come on he is like the Batman of prog rock(in that he is obsessed). Well he is incredibly prolific at any rate. He is not married. Which isnt unheard off but unusual at his age. He seems like the kind off guy that is too into his passion to be devoted to another person. He is not your everyday guy. And if he is an aspie then that would be quite inspiring for me but I digress.

  • @Nauticus89 Nah he is probably normal. Someone who acts more overtly aspie is probably David Byrne from Talking Head's. Steven seems so smooth when he talks in interviews. Then again I can do that too if im talking about something im passionate about.

  • @Nauticus89 But maybe Im just an introvert with anxiety disorder too. I mean I had nightmares all the time as a kid. And social phobia. I just had to tell some psychiatrist how many words I knew, how much I sucked at math and thought school was a bore, what I thought about other students and draw a picture. And then I got the diagnose for whatever reason.

  • I can't believe this little crumpet kicked me out of Storm Corrosion. Now he'll be stuck with a shit drummer like Gavin Harrison or Pat Mastelotto.

  • nice voice and style , does remind me of Roy Harper---surch him on you tube. He,s 3 times Steve,s age , but still give me that same shiver.

  • @KELZOriot I'll du dat

  • @KELZOriot Steven Wilson's actually pretty old though. He looks like he's in his late 20's but he's really 44.

  • This sounds like that - isn't that what bands are famous for to an extent.

Don't we all speak the same sort of conversation on a day to day basis.

maybe we need repetition - watch the adverts.

  • This bastard kicked me out of Storm Corrosion and therefore it's going to suck. They're gonna be stuck with a shitty drummer like Gavin Harrison.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY You're a funny guy!

  • @vicko267 wheres the contradiction?

  • .......... aaaaaannn this is now the 6th time ive repeated this vid

  • Does anyone know where to find this in a (much) better quality? Love this performance. Thanks for uploading!

  • lol at finding a god damn argument in every comment list of every youtube video seriously people it just videos and people have different opinions shut your computer if it makes you angry. Masturbate, exercise, go OUT! :)

  • Comment removed

  • @TheNoVaSpY Perfect teeth you racist deluded 40 year old, bitter, vulgarian, deluded, semi literate, street dweller. Listen if you had proffered a decent argument I may have some respect for you (see prior comments and answers) Also do you note that my comment is VERY popular. You are in a minority. How can you expect a coherent answer when you make assumptions, generalisations, inferences and litter your question with profanities ? Please don't respond, you are embarrassing yourself

  • @TheNoVaSpY P.S. the term "Bell End" relates to the end of a cock, the gland or tip of the member. A well known phrase in England. And quite apt in it's use to describe you. PS I thought Canadians were chilled out.

  • @TheNoVaSpY Such raw hostility. It says a lot. Never mind. And you are Mrs Wilson I presume ?

  • @TheNoVaSpY You sir are a bell end.

  • The correct name of the song is Normal, right?

  • @anaquiias nah it's called Sentimental. it's from the album Fear of a Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree.

  • @Ananthrk I see, the strange thing is that it is almost the same as Normal by porcupine tree (Steven's band)

  • @anaquiias That's because Normal is a porcupine tree song as well as Sentimental. Sentimental is the version released on studio album, whereas Normal is a sort of alternate version released later

  • @PinkFloydShineOn I see... and you're right, the song is well as Sentimental.

  • @PinkFloydShineOn And oh! I just noticed that he have some parts of Trains in the Guitar

  • @anaquiias Yep I noticed that too, it's in all versions of this song.. it's just a similar riff lol probably not intentional.. but very similar to Trains :P

  • recorded in the one and only: israel!!!

go steven wilson one of the greatest minds in the world

  • @WalkaboutShriker

Israel is a piece of shit what are you talking about?

  • This IS awesome!

  • @stevegrierson I can imagine. I love Steven Wilson's talent but he does give off kind of a weird personal vibe on the personality side... If you want to reestablish your faith in good musicians meet Devin Townsend :) the man will spend thirty minutes with you just talking about life.

  • can someone explain me why genius like Wilson would make a song with Pendulum?

  • Love the song, and also steven . ♥

  • I wish I was that 19 year old bird! *wink*

  • Bring on grace for drowning, cant wait

  • 27 people will never be sentimental.

  • Nice voice and a good text. The sound of the acoustic guitar is very good.

  • Porcupine Tree is amazing. They have an elite group of band members. Especially their drummer. Furthermore, Steven Wilson has really changed my life. He has inspired me to become a better musician and songwriter and his music has definitely touched my soul. I wish to meet him some day and sing a song with him or just hang out and talk. I can wait for his solo new album!

  • But what's normal now anyway ?

  • what kind of mics are those?

  • @Bambamyd large diaphragm condenser mics

  • @Bambamyd They look like Neuuman U87. I know that Steven has one at his home studio and he uses it for vocals/piano/acoustic guitar or other acoustic instruments. Very expensive!

  • Love the music. However I met him once after a gig in a nearby pub, he was disinterested and had a slack handshake.............was more interested in chatting to a 19 year old bird. And the moral of this story is "Don't meet your heroes"

  • @stevegrierson stage image, baby.. stage image.

    still, fantastic musician.

  • @stevegrierson Hey, he's human. Not a god. Though that's always disappointing. From what I hear though he doesn't seem to enjoy the touring process too much.

  • @stevegrierson True man!! but u never know what was on his mind! They ve given us the gift of music, and that somehow gives us the life against the shitty world!

  • @blinkofaneye2soon Can't argue with that

  • @stevegrierson I felt much better before you said this.

  • @jammoose What do you mean ?

  • @stevegrierson You have soiled the pure image that was steven wilson for me!

  • @jammoose Sorry, he's a fantastic muso though and maybe it was an "off" moment for him.

  • @stevegrierson he didnt want you to cock block him! hahaha jk, i bet he's a cool person in real life, maybe just an off day or something hahaha

  • @stevegrierson You need to ask yourself, "are you more interesting than a 19 year old girl?"

  • @NapoleanXV Given that he was being greeted by FANS and also he appears relatively intelligent you need to ask yourself "What can I learn from a kid that I don't know already" Or he could have made the decision to treat somone that aids his livelihood with a tad more respect. God I sound bitter (I'm not but you did ask me the question)

  • @stevegrierson AHAHAHAHAHA XD

  • @stevegrierson Maybe he had a rough night or something...I don't think he is that disrespectful...

  • @stevegrierson I just think when one gets to be that famous, you get to be that disconnected from people and fans.... It may become awkward just to talk to a fan... just guessing

  • @stevegrierson I'm actually driving to meet him on Sunday before his concert. Whether he's interested in talking or not I still want to get a picture and some stuff signed.

  • @KapustaCuber Good luck. It really did take some of the shine off my admiration for him

  • @stevegrierson People often say he seems distanced in person. But you probably just had bad luck.

  • @stevegrierson You obviously impressed him then :-)

  • This man here is the best guitarist and musician in my opinion... Respect to others but Steven Wilson is just pure class...

  • The chorus is genius.

  • I just listened to this and LITERALLY went out of the butt and into the fuck!

  • @Asgard1337

    LMFAO.

  • I Love Steven, sigh*

  • notice the hebrew on his mic ;)

  • What's funny is that he doesn't think he's that much of a guitar player. Doesn't know the names of chords and shit. I love it. That's the hallmark of a genius. "This sounds good." That's the way to do it. And yes, Steven, it does sound good....

  • so cute I love Steven

  • Really good song. Why MTV in Italy don't show people like this man?

  • @agaliareth78 Mtv in the whole world -__- Porcupine Tree ♥

  • Love, love, love Steven Wilson!

  • love the acoustic version

  • Additional sympathies from Sweden. I dont know Steven or his father or anything about his personal life. But he is an inspiring musician and a seemingly nice guy.

    My condoleances.

  • Oh my, THAT voice *melts*

  • my heartfelt sympathy to you sir steven.

  • sympathies from Sweden mr Wilson...

  • R.I.P Steven Wilson's dad :( condolences from India

  • My deepest condolances to you, Steven.

  • Can't get enough of it! :O

  • I dont want to become sentimental, but i hope to see P.T. very soon back in Tilburg, miss you completely (:

  • haha witches....

youtube.com/user/jgtrace?feature=mhee#p/a/u/0/S8Jr2EoweS4 <---PLEASE check out my band and projects.

  • Who ever disliked this is almost certainly a witch and shall burn for their sins.

  • 0:12 - 0:17 the strumming looks just a little bit off....

  • omg what a sweet thing!! wilson you`re god!!! *.*

  • Beautiful. Cannot believe one guy can be so talented, and I only found him recently!

  • Steven is a 43 years old teenager

  • @oshoPatriarka No matter how old he is his lyricwriting persona and voice is always that of a somewhat schizotypal young man yes.

  • @PennyDreadful1 I think I meant to say "avoidant"

  • @oshoPatriarka He's so ANGSTY!

  • @oshoPatriarka is he 43??????

  • @oshoPatriarka Seriously. They guy doesn't look a day older than 25 at the oldest :I lol

  • @oshoPatriarka XDDD AHAHAA

  • Steven is not 44 year old!that's impossible!

  • @loupiotte He just looks like a Smart Kid.

  • @windriderrr exactly!!!ehehehehe

  • @loupiotte OMG! he could be my dad!!! D:

  • @loupiotte if you mean that he seems to be younger i agree about that ... if you are not sure... he is actually 43 =)

  • @dlkrdlkr oh really? so:

Steven is not 43 year old!that's impossible!

    satisfied?eh ehehe

  • GREATEST PROG SUPER GROUP LINE UP EVER:

    Mike Portnoy-Drums,Vocals

    Neal Morse-Keyboards,Vocals

David Gilmour(Not gonna happen, but wouldnt that be amazing!)-Guitars,Vocals.

    John Myung-Bass

  • @PASTAandMUSE Dude Gavin Harrison and Neil Peart are better than Mike Portnoy

  • @Axedrumgod shit! ur right,i should've chose Gavin...for some reason his name didnt pop up,but yeah switch MP with GH and now you've got the best prog super group ever!

  • @PASTAandMUSE Micheal åkerfeldt?

  • @Opethfullcovers was thinkin about him too,he would be great for a prog metal supergroup though, couldn't picture him in a plain prog supergroup

  • I love him!

  • That´s NOT depressing! That´s wunderful music!

  • @NjDevilsFan77 No, it's depressing.

  • @ryomaster85 This is the accoustic version, the CD version you can find on Fear of a Blank Planet

  • Comment removed

  • This is crippingly depressing.

  • fantastic song by one of the top musicians of our time. respect !!

  • I heard somewhere that Steven Wilson is atheist....Hey hold on a second!!!How God can believe to another god??

  • best songwriter that ever lived

  • i have 2 hours now keep pushing the replay button

  • hate how it goes slow mo in the intro so we cant figure out what hes playing.... >=(

  • @coryu711

    probably done on purpose :D

  • One of the most moving and sad songs i've heard.

  • So fantastic., so emotional. Still I like "Normal" from Nil Recurring even better.

  • When he sings he is godlike. Oh well, he is anyways...

  • :( We dont get porcupine tree CDs in india... :'( if anyone knows where i can get them... pls pls. i beg... :(

  • @AneeAniAnees You can use grooveshark, but yes it's best to have the cds.

  • @AneeAniAnees Poor you ,there are so many PT releases !! try amazon i was lucky to get " recordings"on amazon its a 20'000 limited release ,i payed 100 euro for it and its my pride and joy .I now have every release from them except staircase infinities which is really rare.

  • @porcupine34 Thanks a ton bro...

  • I've got Staircase Infinities. Care to swap music?

  • Steven is the shit, Enough said

  • Really amazing!

  • lady gaga fans should stay in the no talent/no emotions part of youtube and stop disliking real art just because they still dont get what music is really about.

  • I have the biggest man crush for this genius.

  • Im so sad that it took me 23 and a half years to find Porcupine Tree!

  • Awesome!!!! thanks for this share nick40nick40 ~

  • perfect song.. Steven Wilson is a genius

  • who can ever dislike it?! His voice is sex vor my ears.

  • Flipping Brilliant !!!! Love this man who made the perfect band... Even Robert Fripp thinks so... Done & Done !!

  • God knows what Steven wants to tell us with this song. It is just sentimental. The music is interesting also in the song normal. As a musician I think you must like the song normal more.

  • Am I the only one who definitely prefers this over normal? I like normal quite a bit, but something about it never came through to me like this one did.

  • omg thats simply amazing.

  • Learning how to play this through the video, does anyone know all the Chords?

  • @ColorOfAir

    Really really easy by ear,

    but it's Am - F - Dm - E

  • Gosh, I fell for him!

  • it's in Israel LOL

  • what you talking bout. Seven Wilson IS GOD!!!!!!!!

  • i don't think that needs many words...just brilliant!

  • I hate Steve Wilson....he's too good to be normal...."But what's normal now, anyway."

  • I thank God I met PT a bout three years ago, so now I have something totally new and more than great to hear!!!
