The most amazing thing is that John wrote a majority of Pil song lyrics while in America. It was what saved him at the moment after the Winterland gig. He had several songs and realized that Malcolm just wanted to use a bunch of kids and burn them out to make a legend. It didn't work as well as Malcolm had thought because really Pil is the Sex Pistols minus 4 of the original members.
120 minutes was the best show mtv ever produced. that and post modern mtv. the rest has been rubbish. now it's just a blight on society. and to think i had to wait until midnight on school nights to start watching this. it was like they were hiding the best music. what a bunch of corporate pricks. the music 120 minutes played was so good.it was such a great time to explore music.
I missed out on many of the good alternative bands that were creating during this time. B4 the internet and MTV there were only mags and radio that served to influence my tastes in music when I was 16-19 during '78-'81. The only alt. I was into then was a group called Japan from the UK. and a few others. I missed out on some good ones and it's great to see this stuff I missed!
Lydon had the original PIL material thought out before the Pistols broke up, but they wouldn't have any part of it. The sound is 180 degrees apart, but what was in his head still came out, and we're all the better for it.
the eighties were an amazing time to grow up because you really had to hunt to find good, such as real punk and real alternative. everything was being homogenized thanks to mtv white people and reagan. this brings back memories of being a part of something that "normal" people wouldnt dig. now days, everyone is peirced, tatted and completely uninteresting. dissapointed...sums it up nicely
yeah id rather sit down and talk to johnny than any head to toe tattoed pierced rocker of late. boring, every one. john did it with his brain, not his body. these guys today are just goin thru the motions. yelling and they are not even mad.
i dont know if you noticed or lived thru the 80's but it was whiter than the 50s. thats the way the xtian right and the repubs wanted it. and they, if you remember, ran the show.
In about '98 or so I first heard the Icehouse cover of this song used on The Berlin Tapes. I adore the album, and I decided to check out the original after reading a review today that said Icehouse's version is darker than the original.
It was hard to believe considering this is Johnny Rotten, but that review was right on the money. I'm rather surprised with how "nice" this song sounds. It's rather interesting. :)
WoW, MTV use to play videos ...... Well, way before they started selling Suicide with DJ AM and the sickly sweet syrup of the ideology of the force feeding of the "Manufacture of a purchased, cool ...." and all it's associated fees and & extra charges .....
I wonder if Colin Baker knew Johnny was going through his wardrobe?
