I think American police 'in general' use excessive force. I don't know why, maybe they are scared. I have personally seen a mere security guard pull a gun on an unarmed middleaged woman because she was arguing (no swear words, no threatening gestures) with a stupid civil servant who was giving her a hard time about some papers and had made her wait 3 hours. They make people irate then wonder why they get upset, then pull a gun on them or tase the crap out of them.

My point is that if used correctly, at the appropriate level, and when justified, physical force can be as effective as a taser. I agree that this officer was right in using the taser, but was there another way to subdue this suspect?

The taser is not a wonder device that can even the playing field for officers scared of going hands on. As an officer you have to dedicate yourself to training and staying prepared for those times that it is simply your will versus the suspect's. Our disagreement is an example of a divide that exists in the police profession today.

But what if at the first sign the suspect was not complying with verbal commands the officer made contact with the suspect and whatever amount of physical force was needed to subdue him? Instead the officer's first response was to use the taser. Why? Again I agree it was a viable option, but the death may have been avoided if the officer would have used physical force first. There are times as an officer that you have to risk your ass.

This is what you get tell an officer to use a taser instead of what you are naturally given (your hands). There are situations that the taser is useful, but this may not have been it. When the suspect failed to comply after being aggressive towards the civilians the officer should have grabbed the suspect and applied the minimal force to make the arrest. If the officer felt that the suspect by his actions was escalating the situation he could have used more force then the suspect.

I feel sorry for the officer. He used the tazer to put the teen down, but the teen doesn't go down. To me it looks although the tazer is doing nothing to him. So the officer thinks its not working properly so he just keeps the tazer on hoping the guy would go down. Well the guy did go down, but dead. I think they should have trained the officer and every officer that if nothing seems to be working, immediately turn off the tazer. So the force should get sued, not the officer.

Why didn't this officer know that giving a guy an electric shock (that typically brings you to the floor in less than 3 seconds) for 37 seconds would be fatal?

Police cover up injuries, big and small, all the time.

If tasers were so safe, why have so many people died after being hit with one?! If the proper officers were hired in the first place, they would hardly ever require the use of a taser b/c they could deal with confrontation in other ways. It's only b/c some of the cops they hire these days R small/weak guys, or women, both of which who can't handle themselves, and as a result they rely on the taser, and often use it when it does not need 2b used: the result is needless injury & death. Shame.

That's pretty messed up. Not that the officer tasered him when responding to someone acting violently and aggressively, but rather that he continued to resist arrest while being tasered.
