  • Great Ian thanks!

There was a very little insect behind the glass!!!!

Now it is dead and removed (sorry for this little animal).

Bought my mac yesterday second hand in perfect condition

    now it is really perfect!

    Great video!

Do you have video on how to open the mac to replace the processor for a faster one

    and faster videocard?

    Like to hear

    André (Netherlands)

  • Omg thank you, have an imac at work that had to have the screen replaced ( luckly under applecare) and when i got it back there is dust all inside. I keep trying to clone them out in photoshop, then i realize... Hehe. Great vid!

  • Apple iPad 2 Public Giveaway!

Heres the link: bit.ly\zWxGJF Thumbs if you got a iPad 2!

  • I love you

  • just use a tiny suction cup that come with little OPEN and CLOSED signs, just use one at the top right corner or top left corner, push in just a bit, and pull... done!

  • You Sir look like Johny Ive ;)

  • Thanks a million for uploading this video, works a treat and takes about 30 seconds - thanks again, Barry

  • Will this work on 2011 21.5 inch mac??

  • Didn't help my stain. It appears the stain is on the LCD itself. I have a brand new 27" iMac, and I've already had the screen replaced because of this problem. I hate it so much.

  • will this work on the new imac

  • @MrMusic177 it will

  • HOT!

  • Does this make the glass much more loose? PLEASE REPLY!

  • @Pjor1cp no

  • @Pjor1cp It should be just as tight as before. The glass is held in by magnets so it is just as tight as the first time it was put in.

  • Awesome, Thanks

  • thanks man... thought I'd have to take mine to Apple support, but it's just a week out of warranty.

I guess the strangest thing is that this is such a problem that you had to make video about it. Bad on Apple's part.

  • my god you look like jony ive and you sound like him! for those whom don't know who jony ive is, he is the Vice President of Apple

  • Great video! I've got my cotton gloves and am about ready to attempt this myself. I've been putting it off but it has gotten to be really bad. I still have no clue why Apple didn't notice and fix the horrible design flaw. My old school HD Cinema Display has no dust in it and it is over 10 years old.

  • what's the point of cleaning the inside screen?

  • @adlsfreund Hi, the front cover isn't a sealed unit on the iMac, so over time, dust gets behind the outer screen and can only be cleaned off by removing the outer cover.

  • @UMABeautyEdgbaston how? i can't imagine how that could happen. i don't see any gaps anywhere. but the outside of my screen is full of stains XD

  • Yes good video. You are definitely breaking the warranty. I had my iMac sent away four times, and the screen was replaced three times, and the fourth was the graphics card. I asked this question to the Apple tech guy,and he said yes you are, some of the reasons are listed below. In your answer you said they won`t even know you did it. Well the answer to that is you have just made a video, and somebody is bound to ask Apple. The other thing is there is another screen behind that one.

  • @Biffo347 Thx for watching. I have stated multiple times in big capital letters that you should assume that this voids the warranty ;o) As for my particular machine, it's out of warranty anyway.

  • after almost a year, my iMac 27 i7 got huge condensation right in the middle of the screen. It's a big foot print. It went away after i turned off overnight but i'm worried it might come back. i've read some issue like this that fog came back same spot.

Do you think cleaning it like this will do the trick?

VERY HELPFUL VIDEO YOU GOT IN HERE!

  • @itoako61 Dust makes the condensation problem worse, so you'll probably find that it helps.

  • @itoako61 Dust makes the condensation problem worse, so you'll probably find that it helps.

  • @chat2ian Thanks MUCH!!!

I did this yesterday using gloves, & my GPS suction cup. Works well i guess.

  • I just fell in love with you. My smudged screen is all super sharp again!

  • @geertvdpalen thanks! I love you right back :o)

  • Excellent - worked a dream for me. I'm a little ashamed to say that I used a sink plunger...!!

  • @borisbrain You serious using a sink plunger? After watching this vid, i'm gonna use mg GPS navigator suction cup.. I think it's better if we use two suction cups

  • Smart job! well done.

  • You look a bit like Jonny Ive

  • a fly layed eggs in my mac pro and their where magggots every where

  • thanx for your help. still really can't believe it was that simple!

  • Yes it is a good video easy even for me. The issue is however if you do this you are Definitely breaking the Warranty, and any future problem, Apple will not touch it. You do so at your own risk.

  • @Biffo347 I believe that's not true. Warranty is not void for cleaning your unit. You're not breaking or removing screws. You're just pulling the screen & they won't even know you did it. There is no security tag on it.

  • thanks a lot ! its was very helpful!

  • LMAO! I hate it when people put they scummy hands on my screen it's like HELL NAAAW! >:(

    Helpful video BTW! xD .

  • Thank you soooo much! I had a spider stuck behind my glass and thanks to your demonstration I got it out! Thanks!

  • Thanks so much for uploading this video! When you clean the dust behind the screen of your own iMac, does it get every single dust particle? Or do you still see a couple stray particles behind the glass after cleaning?

  • Does this work on 2011 iMac?

    Please respond. Urgent!

  • @LTPDfilms Yes it does! Just be careful as there are locator pins that you need to take care not to bend. Be gentle and you'll be fine.

  • Thank you!!! …

  • Thanks for the video Ian. When i unpacked my new iMac i found that for £1500 you get a little bit of dust free with your purchase so this really helped. What with it being summer now have you found that the screen isnt immune to small thunder flies either :s?

  • @mattyl18 lol. Yes I noticed the free gift when I got mine too. I haven't had an insect problem myself, but it's quite common for people to find small flies under the glass. I imagine that at some point in the future, Apple may produce a sealed unit, but alas, not yet! Thanks for watching.

  • (suction holders) u mean suction cup as people say these days

  • @Vbbv22 I guess that depends on where in the World you are! :o)

  • @MrGavintime Yup, that's what I thought first :D

  • 2:07 getting finger prints

  • Yeah i removed the glass for fun.. and i let i fall yeah realy cool. i like this video Thumbs Up on this vid!

  • great video! you don't happen to have an instructional video for replacing the hard drive?

  • @mftnextpage I'm thinking about replacing the hard drive for an SSD, so if I do, i'll definitely shoot a video of the raplacement!

  • OMG! at first I thought it was the guy from apple!! hahahahaha

  • 1:16 (tee hee)

  • Comment removed

  • @MrGavintime lol. Well he's a handsome chap, so thanks :o) We probably sound similar because he was born only a few miles north of me.

  • i have the new imac and will it work with that ???

  • @jackallmighty1 Hi Jack. Yep, it will, the new iMacs also use magnets to hold the cover.

  • @jackallmighty1

Yep, except those mobile windshield devices are not cheap. A cheap alternative is a suction cup from an aquarium heater or filter. They can be had for less than a dollar in a big box store that sells aquarium products. Nice and soft rubber when new. Does the same thing as demoed in the video.

  • Your a genius,thanks

  • I have the 2010 imac which the screen is borderless. How do i go about removing that??

  • Cheers! worked perfect for me..

  • Top Video!

  • ur genius! thanks dude

  • Thank you so much.

  • Sorry! I was commenting on the dust problem that many custermers have with the iMac :)

  • All the resons in the world dont change the fact that they sell a screen you have to disassemble and clean first time after a few month, and the rest of it's life! Werry low standard compared to other screens or? This you should be told when you buy an iMac. And if you/apple mean is the custermers own problem to fix, then even more so!

  • @TerkelChristensen Hi Terkel, I'm not sure it's a "fault" though. It's probably due to the fact that it's not feasible to air-seal the display (though they do on the macbooks). Could be that you have to allow for expansion on the larger screen area, so a sealed unit would probably distort.

  • thank you soooo much!

  • wow! i just got an imac yesterday and was wondering how it was held together, sneaky apple. just be careful of those pins, i snapped one right off with so little pressure.

  • @thetommantom Thanks for the update. you've been warned people - take care with those sneaky little pins!

  • @chat2ian can they void my warranty now? i dont think so but im just wondering

  • S*u*p*e*r*b*! With your tip I managed to take an ant that was walking between the glass and the display of my new imac. To prevent the glass from falling and breaking, I put a pillow underneath. Thank you very much and greetings from Brazil!

  • @jolweiss :o) That must have been driving you crazy! Glad to be of help - thanks for watching and its always nice to hear from people in new places. Cheers!

  • iClear, Compressed Air, and some cheap latex gloves. iMac screen is spotless again. My O.C.D. can now rest.

  • @MrNickWright so you have O.C.D for cleaning the screen of the mac comp. ?

  • I pulled it out from the bottom. Oops

  • Thank you so much! I thought I had done something wrong to have those streaks appear!

  • Dude, nice job!Had no idea it was so easy! I had my display replace under warranty and have had apple tech smears ever since!

  • I would be afraid of breaking

Does it work on the new ones

  • Ugh this is so tempting for me to want to to, but I'm so scared to considering it took me forever to save up for my 27" quad core. All I want to know is if a standard glass cleaner will work or if I need a special cleaner to clean the glass. It's just the outside of it that's dirty.

  • @pksmb1120 Try something like iClear. I think regular glass cleaner is a little too abrasive for things like this seeing as it's made more for Windows and stuff. The best thing to do if you have the glass cleaner already and can't be bothered to get some iClear or similar, is just water the stuff down. Spray it ONTO A CLOTH (microfibre are the best, the sort used for cleaning your glasses) to clean it then wipe it down with a dry soft lint free cloth to get rid of any marks and stuff.

  • fantastic :)

  • Legend! Cheers dude!

  • If I fuck up the glass/screen trying to clean it, does apple warranty cover it? or should i just take it to the store ?

  • @bood3e The Apple warranty doesn't cover you damaging your equipment. If you think you will, take it to the store.

  • will this work with the latest imacs?

  • @LastPlaceHeroes Yes it will, they use the same Magnet system to hold the screen cover in place.

  • cool idea

  • Thank you for the help

  • Thanks! This video helped out a lot!

  • perfectly easy...thanks a lot

  • Doing this voids your warranty... Do so at your own risk.

  • @adamdiswikkid that's correct, so be careful (I say this in the description, but it's good to repeat it, thanks)

  • i did the same process after i saw smudge like darkness on the upper left corner but it seems to be not dust. what are they?

  • @serhanbg It's probably moisture - mine has this too.

  • @serhanbg I just has 2 iMac screens replaced for the exact same thing. They are signs of faulty LCD displays. If you still have AppleCare on your iMac, then the replacement LCD and labor will be free.

    Tim

  • @RottGutt2000

i just went to apple shop and they told me if it is not dirt they will change it.

  • Thx man! i was very frustated couse mine has less than a year and it has this kind of trouble, im about to do it now :p

  • shut it down first...

  • Can this be done on the new MacBook pro?

  • @MacBookPro1995 No it can't. But then the Macbook Pro has a sealed display, so you shouldn't need to clean it.

  • this worked great thank you

  • Superb! One of the best DIY vid clips I have seen - honestly. Will be buying a glass suction-holder tomorrow and doing my 24" - can't wait.

    Thank you!

  • @Urbino237 Cool! Thanks a lot!

  • @chat2ian

hey i was wondering if their was any way that i could play PC games on an IMAC or use pc equipment such as razer keyboard and mouse.

  • @bowlerama2 Hey bowlerama...yes you can you have to use a program called bootcamp which is a dual boot program that allows you to boot both Mac OS and Windows.

  • @schantalpaul

    ohh ok thanks

  • im gonna start using wind screen now!

  • @barrellauncher155 lol. Cool! Try using "lift (elevator)", "tap (faucet) " and "boot (trunk) too :o)

  • thank you so much i was so worried about my dusty screen thx alot

  • does this void your warranty?

  • I'm definitely amazed! The iMac keeps getting better and better! xD

  • I Got A 27" & I,m Not Talking About APPLE ;)

  • where did you get the brush?

  • @N02505 it's a soft nylon make-up brush.

  • @KayoGoncalves Obrigado meu amigo!

  • i have the 2010 21.5 inch model will it work with mine ? and will it harm my imac please someone reply

  • @TRCpLaYa Hi, Yes it will work. It won't harm your mac providing you are careful. However, if you do this, you do so at your own risk. If you're unsure about what you're doing, don't do it :o)

    Cheers,

    Ian

  • this is fucking awsome just tried it i used my finger on the ledge of the glass at the top to get it off though

  • Doesn't look so impressive without the glass

  • well, think that is the best way, i skipped the plunger, because i am a chicken :-)

but tried the tape thing, but it might live some stuff on the screen.

did see you're video after that :-)

  • thanks alot for this! Work like a charm!!!

  • thanks man .. i like this video.. i'm upset from this problem for a year now

  • dose it work with 27 inch iman??? i got mine 2 weeks ago

  • @Nuclear793 Yep, it works with the 27" too.

  • @chat2ian there's one with a plunger. use a plunger to take the screen off. that was dumb

  • @Nuclear793 Anyone who uses a sink plunger on the screen of a Mac is an idiot.

  • @chat2ian Wiping it whit a towel or the thing you use also is stupid. You see, when you leave it somewhere (dirty place) you get tiny sharp particles and sometimes bread crumbs(crumbs i dont know how to spell that.) and other useless TAT. So that way you scratch your screen instead of cleaning it

  • I've got some brownish, irregular stains behind my iMac 27 glass display — smoke, I imagine. I think I'll give your technique a go and use water with a microfiber cloth. Sound reasonable?

  • @bel2cara Sounds reasonable, but very little water! No more than moisture really. Good luck.

  • Phew! You're the man. Thanks a million. :)

  • 1:01 - thats what she said!!

  • Is the front cover really just pure glass? So a regular household glass cleaner would work? There are no coatings of any sort on it?

  • @nurktwin1960 The cover isn't glass, it's plastic, so you have to be careful not to use anything that may contain a solvent.

  • what should i do if the dusts keep coming in behind the screen when im cleaning?

  • @Sfstboy This is usually caused by static electricity building up on the screen cover when you clean it. It helps to use a new, clean cloth of an anti-static type. Breathing on the cover will also help as this creates a very small amount of moisture which tends to trap dust.

  • Thank you Master!

  • Great advice Ian, thanks a million. I very much am no less picky about cleaning things as you seem to be....

    Cheers!

    Jeff

  • Thanks very much - I had an annoying spec of dust under my iMac screen which is now gone.

  • Brilliant! I was just about to take my Mac to the Apple store. Off to get some cloths instead!

  • @johndglynn Good plan! 30% off at Gap this week :o)

  • where can i get hold of one of the sucker thingies??

  • @craigriches You can probably borrow one from a friend who has a GPS in their car. Failing that, see if you can get one from ebay.

  • Merci !!!!!

  • @jano1050 Hi, You could use the Mac without the cover screen. It's only purpose is to protect the LCD and to give a gloss effect. However, it does look a little weird without the cover :o) As far as I'm aware, there's no reason that it would damage your Mac, but at your own risk of course ;o)

  • can you use the imac without putting back the protective glass in order to get the

anti glare effect? or will the computer be damaged from being used without the glass?

  • @hyllusband Hi, You could use the Mac without the cover screen. It's only purpose is to protect the LCD and to give a gloss effect. However, it does look a little weird without the cover :o) As far as I'm aware, there's no reason that it would damage your Mac, but at your own risk of course ;o)

  • Your tip on using the windshield-mount suction cup is spot-on brilliant...

Thanks to you I can look at my screen without the thick film of gunk that was discoloring my display.

Additional Tip: For those who want ZERO streaks/residue, go to an auto supply store and buy "Invisible Glass" wipes (UPC: 793165901649) and microfiber windshield glass cloths (UPC: 074804011081) - without them I highly doubt I would have ended up with the same results.

Kudos Ian - you are THE MAN!!!

  • @zzz1zzz1xxx Great tip on the streak-free wipes thanks!

  • Thanks a million mate - was really getting worried!

  • @OliverAnthonySaid Thanks a lot! Nice to know it was helpful.

  • Hey thanks a bunch, I used a suction cup hanger deal used in showers to hang your washcloth. Just bought a new 27 imac and it appeared that it had dead pixels BUT I could tell it didnt look like it was on the screen so anyways popped off the glass as you showed and it WAS just dust, cleaned it out and now extremely happy!!!! Its such a pain to have to box it all up to take it back to the store or even apple, so good work!

  • Great!!!!!! I have the same problem, much dunst. But this video has help a lot. Ty!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • My new iMac thanks you very much! You've been extremely helpful. Just got my iMac 27" today and almost returned it due to particles behind the screen. You saved me time and hassle! Cheers

  • Is that a 24? I loved the old 16:10 ratio. The new ones are sort of awkward to do graphics junk on. Colossal bummer.

  • @Benjomatic Hi, yes it is a 24. I know what you mean, the new widescreen ones are great for movies, but not so nice for working on.

  • Thanks soooo much! I was quite worried about having dust behind the glass of my iMac.which is almost new. (warranty here in Brazil is only for threee months, my computer is 5 months old...). And now I find how easy it is to do it, and the only tool I need is something I have lots of in my kitchen. :))

  • @MariliaCastello Thanks a lot! :0)

  • lovely, thank you.

  • This video really helped me. i have an iMac 21.5 inch about a year younger than yours or so, and I pulled off the glass enclosure only to find that my suspicions are correct. On the far right corner side in the middle, I have one dead pixel. Not enough to destroy mankind over but it kinda sucks at the same time.

  • @iselldummysmacks Bummer. Something that we have to live with in order to have LCD displays I guess. It's annoying once you find one though isn't it?

  • @chat2ian Yeah it was three weeks upon leaving the Apple Store and enjoying techno bliss until I came across it this morning. Unless five of them appear and start and start a session of Congress on my LCD, I'm not gonna worry too much. Certain wallpapers usually hide them. Plus a waranty comes in handy too if need be.

  • hi.. great video.. do you know any methods how to remove the back stand for the new i mac 21.5" please... i need to take it as a hand luggage..

  • @manuelgozo Thanks. I'm sorry, I can't help you with that one. Looks like it would involve removing the back though, that's scary ;o) Good luck though!

  • Nice and simple, thank you!

  • thx dude good vid 5 stars

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial, worked like a charm! But I do have an issue, the cleaning has removed all the dust from the "LCD shield", but there are traces of dust on the LCD that won't come off. Is there a cleaning solution to fix this, or is this a job for apple?

  • Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone for watching and rating. Apple are adamant that there is no "dust behind the screen" problem. Well really? Because so far, 31,000 of you think that there is a problem :o)

    Thanks for watching!

  • hi. just got my 27 inch imac like 2 months ago. i just want to find out how sensitive it is to cigarette smoke. because at one corner of the black frame, there are small spots which i fear may have been caused by cigarette ash that floats in the air. i noticed that the surface of the screen is a bit sticky so floating dust particles easily sticks to the surface.

  • @dzulq9 Hi, Yes the problem with glossy screens is that they will show up even tiny amounts of contaminants. You should be able to clean the screen with no problem though. To minimise floating dust, cover your screen when switched off, or even tilt it so that the screen is not vertical - then less dust falls on it. It's surprising what a difference this makes.
