• Hey guido's already fistpumped back then. This clip needs an epilepsy warning with all the flickering going on.

  • robin thincke is a tool

  • He would LOVE Internet! :)

  • You guys should watch the SCTV parody called Maudlin of The Night. They ripped into this thing, and took no prisoners.

  • Zappa was GREAT on talk shows... I think he loved the cheesiness.... People forget that his art was based on satirizing all things pretentious, hypocritical and mundane. He was sort of a social anthropologist who reported his observations through his music.

  • When Frank says, "Stop composing music and get a real estate license." The guy and the crowd in the back laughing really hard, and all I can imagine Frank thinking is, "Well I'm glad you're having a good time," since he's being dead serious seems to be babysitting a whole crowd.

  • Painfully obvious Frank thinks Alan Thicke is a douchnozzle....

    R.I.P.

  • @DLRisVH Probably, and yet strangely, Zappa does come back for another appearance on the show. You can see the youtube upload.

  • Unbelievable. I never ever thought I'd see this interview again. I saw it live when it first appeared on T.V.

Thank you so much for posting this! =)

  • Thick is all "Ahh, I see no one wanted to pay any money to make your move. Well..."

  • Thick is all "This jackass is really breaking my balls on this one."

Zappa is all "Fuck this nigga"

  • 0:47 hahahahaaaaaaaa .......

    Arsenio Hall, what a faggot.

  • The audience must be on drugs. Hysterically laughing at nothing.

  • its going to the bank......genious!

  • We need more ZAPPAs

  • I tried to try to watch Thicke of The Night on many occasions but most of the time it seemed like the cast was on Xanax and it made Johnny Carson seem cutting edge.

  • I used to watch this show for three reasons: 1. I was bored. 2. For glimpses of the GREAT band they had on there, and 3 for hopes that Frank would show up.

  • alan thicke was being very confrontational in a hollywood schmooze manner. you can tell he doesn't think much of frank, but has to interview him. frank hated dealing with schmuks like him but periodically had to, to promote himself. it's no wonder he gave one word answers. i saw this when it first aired, and while i was dissapointed that i didn't find out some more about frank, it cemented my opinion of alan thick. DOOFUS!

  • Right, Alan Thicke is a douche, and his son is a talentless hack too IMO. Must be an uninspired blandness gene in the family. Thicke is the antithesis of Zappa!

  • actually i didnt respect him even before this interview... you're talking about Alan Thicke, right?

  • um no , frankee zappa ,

  • I also love the way these idiot shows and the mainstream media in general misrepresented Zappa. It really shows how ignorant they were about him, his music and what it was all about.

Well, if "incredibly far from normal" means far from the usual dummied-down and sheepish mainstream, I guess Frank was just that. hahahaha

  • It's amazing how an audience so not use to being challenged or offered anything of real interest could appreciate Zappa. They gave someone as bland, unmemorable and stiff as Alan Thicke a career. Go figure.

  • These clips of Frank appearing on commercial airwaves are such an amazing treat. He's such brilliant, stark contrast to the hollywood shlock-meisters. Like fine wine, his wisdom is better over time.

  • A strange aside but: does anyone know what Don Felder would have been shilling with this appearance? The "Heavy Metal" movie that he contributed a song to or is this a little after that fact?

Do you have the whole program, hazzaroonee?

  • Why is Alan sitting so close to him? God, what an ugly set, too.

  • It took me a while to figure out Thicke's quip. Baseball icon Jim Palmer at the time did a major print ad for Jockey underwear posing in his briefs. Hence, the reference to Terry's stagewear in the clip. Frank not being very engaging in the interview, but the audience seemed to enjoy it.

  • Allen is such a dumb fuck, schmuck and Frank shows everyone what a deuche bag he is!

  • Alan Thicke Show 1984

  • Gee, I can't imagine why all of Alan Thicke's talk shows were canceled. I'm sure this was probably his highest rated show at the time. Frank did him a favor. What a loss. No...of course I'm not talking about Thicke's show, I'm talking about Frank.

  • YOu can tell that Frank thinks that this show is for fucking idiots. GIVE IT TOO EM' FRANK!!

  • I think he wanted to be there, just to show how dumb Alan Thicke truly is. :)

  • Jim Palmer on drums?

  • Jim Palmer was a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles around this time who was just as famous as an underwear spokesman as he was as a pitcher.

  • 86' I'd say

  • I'd say this was around 1983.

  • "thicke of the night" ean in 83-84 one season

  • IMDB says "Baby Snakes" was released in 1979, which would appear to date this clip fairly precisely.

  • not true; he was dead serious on crossfire; here he's more relaxed as time goes on and has that trademark sly smile sneaking out--huge difference. he was just playing with Thicke...and Thicke--as a fan--loved it even as it made his job harder.

  • he always let his real personality through! when did he EVER hide or pretend?

  • By the look of Zappa's facial hair, I'd say this was in 1983 or 1984. He kept his 'stash trim in those days.

  • Alan Thicke always seemed to be one of those corporate shills, but a cool guy behind the scenes. I think this is true because he had Frank on his show, but more importantly, Frank agreed to do the show.

  • Sorry Dude. It's not a vid. I have it as an MP3 file (downloaded from CAZZA three years ago) on my IPOD and computer. If you know how I can post it without video let me know and I will try. It's in four parts.

  • This is one mucked up show. Why the hell did they invite him on the show? Semms to me like they're just bashing him and all of his art.

  • hés a bit thick(e) ; )...

  • Triva--- Both Zappa and Kasem are of Lebanese decent.

  • utterboxtv: First, that is NOT Casey Kasem interviewing Zappa. It is Alan Thicke. Second, Zappa is of mixed Sicilian, Greek, French, and Arabic descent, though I've never heard/read anyone attributing the Arabic portion of his heritage to any specific nationalitly, i.e. Lebanese, Egyptian, Algerian, or whatever. In one of the other vids here on YT he identifies himself as "Italian", probably due to the identification of his surname.

  • try googling it.. you may find 108,000 pages that disagree with you. Casey?, well that's what the title of the video says..

  • utter: Try Googling what? I made three points in my previous post. With which one of them, exactly, do you disagree? As I wrote: Zappa himself, in a video interview available here on YT, identifies himself as "Italian". The nationalities I've listed as his heritage is taken from a documentary available here on YouTube and Zappa's Wikipedia entry. Sorry, I don't have the titles of the videos on hand.

  • And, FYI, more persons on this post than just me have pointed that the interviewer is Alan Thicke. The title is wrong. Try Googling Alan Thicke and Casey Kasem yourself.

  • where is the hope?

    there isnt.

when god made the republicans he gave up on everything else.hah.

  • Is Mr. Kassem drunk?

  • "jim palmer on drums" ???

  • Not as much as Alan Thicke!! He makes me ashamed of being Canadian.

  • your the best guitar player

  • If I'm not mistaken Allan Thicke composed the themes to Wheel of Fortune, Different Strokes and Facts of Life... He has also endorsed for LEXUS and is now author of a book on PARENTING. He's the white BILL COSBY... Respect him or die!

In all seriousness, Zappa seemed to enjoy appearing on talk shows when the hosts did their homework... but could get really contemptuous when the hosts came across as bird brained... This looks like one of those scenarios...

  • how can you confuse casey kasem with this guy?

he doesn't even sound like shaggy!

  • Is this guy 4 real....try'n 2 outwit Frank!!

  • jim palmer..? wtf is he kidding?

    TERRY BOZZIO!!

  • "Thicke of the Night" ran from '83 to '84, pre "Growing Pains." I think Alan Thicke also wrote the theme to "Animal Crack Ups" the video bloopers show that he also hosted. Why doesn't he share thoughts with Frank on composing?

  • Great.

  • this is thicke of the night not casey kasem. This is where arsenio got rolling on tv.

  • No wonder this Alan DICK is off the air years ago..Did you all just watch Zappa and read his mind about Thick??? Frank was about to slap that silly sob and he was sitting right on top of Frank also!!! RIP Frank..If you can hear, we still love your music and miss ya!!

  • Actually I have an episode of the Howard Stern show on my computer with Frank, Joe Walsh and Bobcat Goldwaith, and they all are goofing on Alan. Frank comes to his defense saying that he knows him and he is a real nice guy and really likes him.
