I remember :17 to :25 vividly... now HBO switched to the whiz-bang galactic opening in 1983... is it really possible that I haven't seen this in all those years and I still remember that music so well?

Maybe... I think music that you heard a lot at one point might be easier to remember many years later than anything else would be.

HBO always was the most innovative of all the other networks when it came to cool graphics and music. Not bad for 1982. Superman did start a craze with the 3D letters.
