  • fantastic, Thanks

  • Martti never did Wotan and yes,he was still finnish, very short before the winter war!

  • Yes, but Boris Christoff....

  • Grazie..bellissimo!!!

    Roberto.

  • That's true, he didn't sing Wotan but he sang Fasolt, Hunding, Fafner and Hagen. And he was 6'7" but I'd guess that was without shoes;) ...and on stage he was absolutely riveting.

  • Magnificent!

  • Quelle voix, quelle pulsation !

  • great one!

  • Does anyone know who orchestrated this version?

  • @MFD99 Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. In my CD notes it says that Martti Talvela asked him to make this orchestration in1984, as the earlier orchestral settings didn't suit for bass voice. Talvela sang the first performance in October 1984.

    Hope that helps. Best wishes!

  • Thank you!

  • I don't understand a word yet it sounds great! Great dramatic voice and music!

  • The Finnish subtitles are so helpful. Thanks for posting.

  • Talvela, rest in piece, had one of the richest and most beautiful bass voices of the 1960s-80s --

  • @stevevandien: yes, and not only one of them (imo) but the best ever, of all time.

PS: Peace - to him, to you and to everyone! ;)

  • And to you as well:) --

  • so beautiful!!!!!! 5******!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • muy bueno y que musica tan asfixiante.

    bravo.

  • i dont like it..... sry

  • I love Talvela's voice!

It actually makes me a little envious tbh.

    Thanks for posting!

  • A Karl Marx 'double'.What a voice-such sadness that he died so young. He must have been incredible on stage at 6 foot 9 inches tall.He was Wotan and Boris...thanks for this upload-it's a little treasure.

  • @vickersman I don't think Talvela ever sang Wotan... do you have any information on that? He's definitely more of a Fafner, Fasolt and Hagen.

  • @BorisGodunov and he did Hunding as well, with Karajan

  • LardoDiColonnata, what a beautiful, perceptive comment.

  • Grazie. Kitos. Thanks... it's just true: He was astonishing!

  • Prego, ei kestae, you're welcome - and you're absolutely right!

  • Great singer. What really is incredible is his Russian. It is probably the best Russian I've ever heard from non-Slavic singer. There is virtualy no accent!

  • 1988.

I believe that was the year he died.

I knew him when I was a kid. I played his son in Boris Godunov. A great man!

  • how could you play his son?:S the part of the son in boris godunov is for a mezzo soprano.

  • he was a kid ;)

  • Boris Godunov in the original version was written for a boy soprano. Rimsky-Korsakov changed to Mezzo.

  • Boris Godunov in the original version was written for a boy soprano. Rimsky-Korsakov changed to Mezzo.

  • i know the original version well, and it never had a boy-soprano part, even in the premiere of 1874, his role was sung by a woman

  • He died July 22, 1989.

  • I believe while dancing at his daughter's wedding- much like the scene from "4 Weddings a a Funeral"-such a loss.

  • I heard him, on the front row, this is without any doubt something to cherish til the day Death comes for me.

  • Field Marshall : " The figure of Death is depicted as an officer commanding the troops in battle, who asserts his enduring remembrance of them all. "

  • Thank you for posting this. Never imagined to see this one. Brilliant....
