That's true, he didn't sing Wotan but he sang Fasolt, Hunding, Fafner and Hagen. And he was 6'7" but I'd guess that was without shoes;) ...and on stage he was absolutely riveting.
@MFD99 Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. In my CD notes it says that Martti Talvela asked him to make this orchestration in1984, as the earlier orchestral settings didn't suit for bass voice. Talvela sang the first performance in October 1984.
A Karl Marx 'double'.What a voice-such sadness that he died so young. He must have been incredible on stage at 6 foot 9 inches tall.He was Wotan and Boris...thanks for this upload-it's a little treasure.
Great singer. What really is incredible is his Russian. It is probably the best Russian I've ever heard from non-Slavic singer. There is virtualy no accent!
fantastic, Thanks

Talvela, rest in piece, had one of the richest and most beautiful bass voices of the 1960s-80s --

@vickersman I don't think Talvela ever sang Wotan... do you have any information on that? He's definitely more of a Fafner, Fasolt and Hagen.

@BorisGodunov and he did Hunding as well, with Karajan

1988.
I believe that was the year he died.
I knew him when I was a kid. I played his son in Boris Godunov. A great man!

how could you play his son?:S the part of the son in boris godunov is for a mezzo soprano.

Boris Godunov in the original version was written for a boy soprano. Rimsky-Korsakov changed to Mezzo.

i know the original version well, and it never had a boy-soprano part, even in the premiere of 1874, his role was sung by a woman

He died July 22, 1989.

I believe while dancing at his daughter's wedding- much like the scene from "4 Weddings a a Funeral"-such a loss.

I heard him, on the front row, this is without any doubt something to cherish til the day Death comes for me.
