  • shittiest. Units. Ever. I almost go deaf everytime i run in one.

  • @TheDolan798 Lol they seem rough. How where the SD60F's?

  • @SkyhawkACE123 about the same lol, I work for CN and the loudest units ive ever been in are 5400s, 5500s, and 2400s, they work okay but you for sure want them at trailing units lol

  • @TheDolan798 Do you still work for CN?

  • @TheDolan798 you could go to GMDD and tell them to replace the cabs with those that are found in the SD70M-2... they're quiet

  • Why did CN get rid of those locomotives?

  • Great catch & neat sound! You won't see these anymore sadly

  • @metraF40PH163 Thanks Evan!! Sadly these are all gone.

  • I didn't say they were not the same companies. I was pointing out that calling a CNR 5400 an EMD SD50F is incorrect as that locomotive has never existed. The GMD SD50F was designed & produced in London, Ontario at what was known as GMD & has produced thousands of locomotives for Canadian & foreign roads including US. Until LaGrange closed shop & production moved to London, Ontario the production from each plant was designated GMD (London) & EMD (LaGrange).

Hope this helps you out foamer.

  • You are calling the Canadian National SD50Fs, EMDs while in fact they are actually GMD SD50Fs as they were built in London, Ontario by GMD, not EMD.

  • @railvidoer thanks foamer :)

  • @railvidoer GMD, EMD are the same companies.

  • @TheWMfan Typical foamer. So very, very touchy.

  • @TheWMfan Railroaders know it as RUN 8. Railfoamers know it as NOTCH 8.

  • This engine was the GM 645 or GM 710 ??

  • @charles8010 16-645F3B

  • @TheWMfan 900RPM's!

  • @TheWMfan They mean the same thing, notch 8 just sounds more of a GE thing, run 8 is more classis and EMD-sounding lol

  • anybody ever seen an alco century 855? are they retired or just rare

  • @metalhealth12 Only three ALCO C-855s were built (two A units and one B unit) and they were all retired and scrapped by 1972, only a few years after they were built. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who has seen one.

  • @TrainHistorian A throttle position. Run 8 would be like putting the peddle to the floor on a car

  • Beautiful

  • So that is an SD-50? I always wondered what those were. I don't know why people are saying they're retired. I see these everyday, a CN line runs right next to our plant, I am outside most of the summer and I get to see ALOT of trains lol. But I had never seen a locomotive like that til I moved to Wisconsin. the thing is the full width in back and then tapers in towards the cab, really weird lookin.

  • @Patricknows SD50F

  • @Patricknows The loco itself is ugly and the design was meant for passenger locos.

  • @SaltineCrackaAss The SD50F and related models were never meant for passenger service. It is a freight-only unit and was specifically designed to provide an enclosed engine compartment in severe winter conditions. "Draper Taper" units such as this have a tapered section of the hood behind the cab to allow some rearward visibility.

  • @trainiax Yea my mistake. I was actually thinking of the F-unit.

  • @Patricknows All the 5400-series SD50F units have been retired. What you are probably seeing are the 5500-series SD60F units, which are nearly identical and are still in service. The 2400-series Dash 8-40CM units are also somewhat similar.

  • It makes me really sad that CN has killed off all of these wonderful locomotives. CSX's are being derated and put into MoW service as we speak. It probably won't be long before they're gone, too. I will miss my favorite EMD locomotive.

  • 'ideals' ?

  • i have my 'puter run through a gemini mixer/equalizer to a nice sony amp connected to some nice, big polk audio speakers. you don't KNOW how GOOD this videos sounds with that set up!

  • @shekkythebastard I hooked it up to my sterio and I have a Sony sub, indeed it is so good!!!!!

  • Let me guess, he has it in nutral for some odd reason. Maybe he forgot to throw the reverser forward. Or, maybe, he was bored and decided to waste some fuel instead of randomly blowing the horn.

  • @BNSFandSP

Exactly what he's doing wasting fuel, but may also have an air leak somewhere and is trying to pump it up. Ex. It might have went into emergency, or just coupled onto a block of cars.. Engineer's are told not to throttle up past '3' pumping air.

  • @shownshine4009 I this is about the 4th or 5th time ive said this, he did it because I asked him to. Nice engineer

  • I've seen this a few times here around the ONR, why do they throttle up the engine when their in the idle position?

  • I love the sound in RUN "8 no matter what unit it is but... Hunter Harris would have shot the engineer trying pump up the air like that!! Those air compressers are separate from the main crank. Oh Well...

  • Charging the pipe. Enough to run quiet a few impact wrenches at that rev (lol). Must be a fairly long train.

  • CN did own SD50F units, they were numbered in the 5400's, the SD60F's were numbered in the 5500's. This is an SD50F, and they have all be retired

  • engineers probably trying to "get up the air"

  • That's an SD60F. I've seen this before. Just as CN trains come off of the Grimsby Sub, they go into Notch 8 to get faster as they head for Toronto.

  • This is an SD50F, I'd recognize that 645F engine anywhere. (had a cab ride in a CSX SD50-2)

  • The SD50 series was never acquired by CN. They only own SD60Fs. The engines are the same.

  • @trainzandbridgez101

The CN had 60 SD50F's in the 5400 series and 64 SD60F's in the 5500 series. They did not have the same engine, the SD50F had the 645F and the SD60F had the 710G

  • OK.

  • what an awesome sound

    whoo

  • I wonder who will come out with these in HO scale in the future? I wouldnt mind having at least 2 of them in CN.

  • Same here, i'd take one in the zebra paint like the one in the video, i read in a magazine that this is the last generation of cowl units, take your videos and pictures while you can!

  • very nice I trully love seeing these old CN units hard at work before the modern CN gets rid of them all

  • Kaslo shops has a shell kit that you build then put on a SD40T-2, SD50 or SD60 frame

  • There are ones available in ho scales not ready to run kits but more a of a tougher kits there made by KASLO shop models you can find them on ebay for about 95 bucks

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Ooh, nice! Usually when you hear a motor in run 8 the train is screaming down the track, and you can't get a decent long sound byte like you have here.

  • Just got a GP38-2 video, but not notching...will post it soon.

  • its EMD.....General Motors ELECTRO-MOTIVE DIVISION

  • The GM units made in London Ontario (such as this SD50F) are made by General Motors Diesel Limited. So, GMD is correct. Same exact locos engines etc. that were made in LaGrange, IL. This was done in the 50's to avoid international tarriffs. Alco (MLW) and Baldwin (CLC) also did this a long time ago.......

  • actualy, at the time of the SD50Fs being made it was ALL still being called EMD.

  • Please check out the company history. Canadian builts are GMDD Ltd, a subsidiary of EMD. Railfanners call them EMD's no matter where they were built, but the builders plates on the locos tell the true story.

  • Sounds like he is getting his train air brake line charged full of air.

  • GMDD, actually. LOL

  • CN is now sending their SD50F's to scrap in St. Louis. Get your videos and pics now before it's too late. The SD60F's might be going later too.

  • I can't understand why. They're not really that old, and probably still have a lot of life left in them. Send them to us down here on CSX, we'll put them to good use! XD

  • The SD50 series has had problems right from the get go, hence the rush by EMD to get the SD60 series to market to make up for it. The 50 series won't be as long lived as the 40 series!

  • I do know that, but I will miss them. Very distinctive-sounding prime mover.

  • To make sure I understand...Run-8 means to run the diesel engine while disconnected from the traction motors? It does sound very different, actually it sounds really good.

  • No, run 8 is the possition of the throttle, 8 being the highest, 1 the lowest, and ideal, and yes, there is no better sound in the world than an EMD 645 prime mover, turbo-charged or de-turbocharged!!!

  • @SkyhawkACE123, sounds very good....but so do GE's when they're running wide open.

  • Awesome video, sounds look like EMD diesel locomotive JT42CWR,nicknamed class 66.

  • wow! that would be cool to get a ge to do that l;ol !

  • They will do it to pump up a brake line quicker

  • Doesn't that put stress on the engine?

  • How?

  • the now locos just don't sound as good as the old ones do!

  • no kiddin'!

  • Superb! I didn't realise they could run the engine up with the traction motors disconnected, wish they'd do it more often :)

  • i asked the engineer to do that

  • i'm gonna steal your idea now, lol, jk jk

  • ehy!

  • the engineer shifted the reverser into N. providing no power to traction motors.

  • turn off generator field

  • Thats another way. lol.

  • just like your car, if the "reverser" is in Neutral, you can rev the engine with out applying power to the axles.

  • Reminds me of the F40PH's I used to see when Amtrak still ran them.

  • nice i see too many of them horible horns on em mostly

  • sweeeeeeeet. i want 1!
