no that's not what happened, chad was asked to audition for the part of nathan by mark scwahn, but chad wanted to do lucas because he could relate to it more becuase his mum left when he was younger, and james only auditioned for the part of nathan, becuase of his basketball abilities, they only managed to get him in a couple of weeks before the network aired the pilot

This episode is when Nathan is in the hospital because of the racecar accident. Basically Nathan is lying in a coma after the accident and he dreams of what life would have been like if Dan had stayed with Karen and Lucas instead of marrying Deb. So instead, Lucas would have had the wealth and stature and Nathan would have been the one growing up on the wrong side of the tracks.Hope that helps.
