There are way too many people( 3million to 20 million? in Sri Lanka)...we need to slow down the breeding and take better care of ourselves and leave wild life to survive. There is no other answer and yet so little discussed about population growth. Only about reducing consumption...not enough. Green is weak feel good about ourselves attempt to stop all these problems. The real sacrifice is responsible human breeding.

What a stupid comment from DntLie2us. The Villagers build tree houses to save their lives. Not to enjoy as westerners. They may not have to pay bills as you said. But they struggling to make their

These villages are still lucky. They dont have to worry about paying phone bills, Internet bills and answer to telemarketers. Enjoy the nature. Thats what lot of westerners retirement plan is. Going to a village, live with the nature, build a house on the tree. So these villages already done that. SO very lucky. You dont have to wait till retire to to that.

A long term solution is to kill all the elephants. It is the cheapest and only cost effective way to protect the lives of villagers. Human live is more important than animal life. The reason why these people are in poverty is because western environmentalists are imposing unfair laws on them. These villagers survived a civil war only to be trampled by elephants. You liberals bitch about ending poverty but you refuse to allow these people to feed themselves.

I agree that killing elephants is not a solution and neither is killing humans :)

I'd like to add that elephants territory is large (which can be tens of square miles per herd). So, its tough to provide a free reign for them when we have to provide a livelihood to poor people. Conservationists are properly educated and informed to place people and elephants in proper locations, allocate resources and to think about controlling either population if at all necessary.

It's easy for you to say that, you live in Canada. You don't struggle for months to grow crops only to have it gobbled up by an elephant. The people of Sri Lanka have a right to protect their food, and prevent their children from starving. If you care about the elephants so much...why don't you commit suicide and donate all your money to the WWF.

Elephants should be treated with more respect, destroying their homes and living near them is asking for trouble. Humans need to give nature space and stop invading their environment because soon we may lose these great creatures forever.
