Good job St.Catharines firefighters...which should have been called in much earlier. Much practice needed for sure for N-O-T-L...possibly better water pressure...???
Oh ya guys for your info those where full time firefighters that came to help on the roof not volenteers they cam in from another district so watch what you say...
Drew where you from as Im only 30 minutes from here and we dont just put water on smoke. Good work?
A body harness? What happens if he goes through the roof and then where is his SCBA. The only reason to vent is to let the hot gases out to allow the Interior crew to advance.
FIRE is supposed to come out of the vent hole relax its a good thing and then you put water on it.. WTF
This hurt just to watch it. To those who commented about appreciation, that is not the point. I can set up a shop and volunteer to fix everyone's car, but if I don't know what I'm doing it will cause more damage than what is already there. This is what we have here. People that don't know what they are doing. Rather obvious from the video. But what do I know, I've only got 24yrs on the job.
If that building wasnt ventilated, the attached roof of the historic building next to it certainly would of me the same demise. Great job to all the career and part-time firefighters who came together to protect as much herritage and splendor this town has to offer. Because of this, you can still drive down Queen Street and see the results of their hard work. Great job to all. Be safe and keep up the good work. remember, you cant please everyone!!
This is why you gotta love you tube. Everyone can sit back and critique a job well done while hiding behind the annominity of the internet. First of all, there is a supplied airline from a tank on the platform of that aerial, the firefighters on top are wearing masks with a six foot breathing line, tethered off to the bucket, he worked off to the side of the vent hole, had a proper ventilation chainsaw and axe, and there is also a charged 38mm back up line in the bucket.
your right....me being a paid full time fire fighter in one of the largest citys in the u.s. gives me no right to judge idoits, what was I thinking. Hey drewbba freaking get a clue u clown
oh yeah right.....did you get a free tee shirt when they hired you too??? Bite me...til your there you have no right to comment for the good or the bad....the only idoit is you...jackass!!!
OH...i guess that by watching this video you know the interior was safe enough for a direct attack.....it's dumb shit's like you that the real firefighter's have too pull out of buildings because they have NO FRIGGEN CLUE!!!!! Til you know better bravo9238,,,,,,,apply to be a cop....maybe you won't kill your partner that way!!
"Fire on Queen Street in Niagara-on -the-Lake Oct. 25 2009" This is a place for all of us to express and share our sorrow over this tragic fire. Everyone who helped put out this blaze is greatly apreciated ....Thank-you all
freaking crazy that chief should be fired for a piss poor ic job. Even though these guys may be volunteers, that is no excuse, for piss poor tactics. I appreciate their zeal to help but they are putting more lives in jeporady than helping. Where was the interior attack? when do you ever direct a stream into a vent opening??????
Our fire fighters train long and hard to do the job they do, they may be volunteer but they risk their lives, not as their job, but as brave people. Instead of criticizing their job, why not appreciate their support and dedication into helping put out the fire.
In regards to the comment posted by medic0350, you can clearly see that the one firefight has a pack on (the roof) and the other firefighter venting the roof indeed had a mask on and he is getting the air from a tank at the bottom of the aerial truck.
This is an example of why more and more firefighters are injured or even killed in the line of duty each year. It's when we allow complacency and poor judgement to take over that stupid and senseless mistakes are made. The very first instance of poor fireground tactics occurs when the div. 2 window is punched by personnel not breathing air. The stupidity is manifested by the roof crew venting without a pack or the tools necessary for a proper vent job. Train smart, work smarter....and safer!!!

Good job Niagara ON The Lake firefighters. One thing though. You need practice on fighting structure fires.

Since when do we vent with our boots and ventilate a roof on a structure you are using surround and drown tactics on?
"Danger, strength and firefighter endurance captured." More like Danger, idots and poor tactics captured.
