For those interested, I knew the person who helped with the original screenplay, the probe ship emerges from a white hole/fountain and the planet it flies to is Kolob--which is supposedly in myth the planet closest to the throne of God. Great movie and ending IMO.
I cried when old B.O.B died, that little banged up robot. Slim Pickens did the voice of old Bob. The music in this movie completely rocked and the special effects for the time were off the charts too!
The evil robot Maxamillion I could get over but those crew members made into drones. Man that gave me nightmares.
Did you know they announced this year plans to re-invent this movie. That doesn't sound like a remake. Disney was specific about saying re-inventing it.
what i like about the robot fight towards the end was that it was believable, and the soundtrack made you worry about the little brave one, the fight was gritty, john Barry worked obn films like Game Of Death and wrote the score for the incredible s
In many sci-fi shows and games like Star Trek and Unreal Tournament they have forcefields that can hold in a breathable atmosphere in space.
Just look at the Cygnus as being equipped with one of those systems. It probably couldnt hold up to an asteroid directly but keepin stuff in should be feasible.
Reinhardt wouldnt have stayed in space for over 20 years if he hadnt taken such contingencies into account. He's evil but he IS a genius.
I go by the Franklin McCrae theory myself. It explains why Reinhardt was so afraid of him and why Max wanted to kill the guy. The crew was loyal only to Frank so Hans put his brain inside Max to control the humanoids (They ignored Hans orders when he was trapped) He loaded up Max's progreamming with failsafes but possibly feared Frank overcoming them. Hans DID beg for protection from him.
That "Angel" at the end was Frank's spirit passing on while Hans takes his place inside Max for eternity.
Wow, RevenderSyn! I never thought of it that way! Now this movie is even cooler.
By the way, I remember how much I loved this scene when it was on Disney Channel in Sweden in 2005. I even recorded it on a video tape but the beginning is slightly cut off...
i think you are taking the beauty away from this scene with that interpretation. The 'angel' is clearly Reinhardt himself, flying to God - even as a child I felt a wonderful sense of forgiveness and liberation radiating from that scene. First the vision of him going through Hell (or Purgatory, really) for his sins, then his ascent to Heaven. It is EXACTLY like in Goethe's Faust, where Faust's soul doesn't go to the devil, but to God, against the (all too human) 'logic' of eternal condemnation.
Nobody said that this was necessarily the Christian afterlife the are witnessing just as the identity of the soul going through Heaven isn't exactly verified since we only really see the back of their head in the scene.
I know..lol, but look at the shape of tip. I think this is one of those things disney was trying to be a little clever about. Notice how they didn't give you a frontal shot of it? And notice how they make that a real quick shot too? :)
stuff from that area often tends to be a quick shot so so that does not surprise Me :-) I guess its something they could get away with more easily in those days.
This movie most certainly inspired Event Horizon.

@miamigroove you better go back to school and get educated. you dont make a 'hole'. you put somethings into a 'pre-existing' one...

The makers of "Star Wars : Knights of the old republic" must have been fans of this movie , the second game reminds me of this movie so much !

The crew not getting sucked out by decompression and breathing IN SPACE without a suit really blows though.

Uh...you can't go to both Hell and Heaven. 1 or the other buddy. Reinhardt went to Hell, the angel wasn't him.

That seems to be the case. Maximillian displays clear hatred and anger at Reinhardt.
B.O.B. even takes noticeable delight in defying Reinhardt and his forces.
